Praefectus Invictus
Hey, Does anyone know of a good contemptor dread to use as the base to an Ultramarines one? I was thinking something along the lines of the imperial fist one but I am not 100% sure how that would work out. Also if anyone has done anything like this please post some reference pics. Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/ Share on other sites
Slips
The Relic Contemptor seems like the easiest base to work off of with the least amount of modifications necessary. The boater
The fist one has a lot of iconography to work off. But if your willing to put in the work, it'll look nice in blue. On the other hand The death guard contemptor Has less obstructive iconography that could just become a battle honor by cutting off the spikes. Then you have a plain iron armor style dred. -The Boater Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/#findComment-3954702 Share on other sites
Praefectus Invictus
Thanks guys for the input. I had a look at the relic contemptor but it doesnt really seem that easy as it has the massive aquila on the front, but I haven't looked at the death guard one yet. Slips
The Death Guard Contemptor is the mos generic-looking of the Legion Specifics. The Relic Contemptor I recommended because of all the bling on it - though thinking about it its more fitting for 40k UM than 30k at this point. You could try the Minotaurs contemptor: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/DefaultFW/xlarge/mino-contemptor3.jpg he only has a few overt Minotaur Emblems on him and they protrude so much that taking them off shouldnt be too hard. Even if you leave them on it has the strongest Greco-Roman feel of all the currently released ones. Praefectus Invictus
Thanks slips, had a look at the death guard contemptor and realised that it would probably work best until ultras get a legion specific one. Shouldn't be to hard to make it work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/#findComment-3954723 Share on other sites
Fire Golem
Why don't you just wait for the UM one? It shouldn't be too long and it saves you just buying one to use in the meantime. I want 4 in my final army.I'm thinking to Ultramarines ones and two other ones converted from other legions. What about the plain ol' Contemptor? And what's wrong with the Aquila? The plain ol' contemptor, which, while it looks nice, isn't as ornate or as detailed as the death guard or IF one. And my greenstuffing skills are non existent so I can't add any extra detail. Brother-Chaplain Kage
Fair enough on the sculpting thing. You might consider the brass etch sheet from FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Etched_Brass/ETCHED-BRASS-ULTRAMARINES-SYMBOLS.html But again, what's wrong with the Aquila? Just don't like the size or where it's placed? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/#findComment-3954830 Share on other sites
Praefectus Invictus
It doesn't fit the time frame. No aquilas unless you are EC or a super veteran commander type who served with the emperor. Slips
Its not the same Aquila though. The EC have the Palatine Aquila whereas everybody else just has the Double Headed Aquila. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/FW/gold-eagle2.1.jpg For the EC Vs http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/31195199/images/1396335224401.jpg For everybody else. Fire Golem
Yeah you're right Slips. The Paletine Aquila is the Emperors personal one that only the EC used. The other one could be used. Praefectus Invictus
Are marines allowed the second aquila? I though it was just for distinguished marines and the EC. Slips
Are marines allowed the second aquila? I though it was just for distinguished marines and the EC. AFAIK, yeah they are. The Palatine Aquila was different in that it was the Emperors Personal Standard whereas the other one just symbolized the Imperium in general. The one you're thinking about for Unification Era vets or having fought with the Emperor is the Raptor Imperialis : http://www.ozdestro.com/uploads/1/3/0/1/13014732/7824582.jpg?351 This thing. Found most commonly on Imperial Fists Upgrade kits and the Contemptor. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/xlarge/IF-Contempt-6.jpg On the Right (facing us) knee http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/DefaultFW/xlarge/IF_Torsos.jpg Right-Most Torso Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/#findComment-3954849 Share on other sites
grand_master85
No, honestly anyone was free to werar the regular Aquila. It's only the fancy Palatine Aquila that the Emperor's Children get. I think they retconned this as for a long time it was said only the EC got to wear the Aquila, but they've changed it. In fact, can't recall where I read it, in Conquest possibly, that the traitors during the Heresy wore more and more the Serpents Eye symbol of Horus, and the Loyalists the Aquila.Anyways, it fits the timeframe just fine so go for it, I say. And it's just the right level of bling for the Ultras. I mean, have you seen the stills from Tempest they previewed? Saw them at the weekender and they are bling-tastic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303644-ultramarines-contemptor/#findComment-3954853 Share on other sites
Praefectus Invictus
Alright, sweet. Make that one contemptor, one DG contemptor and 2 Ultramarines contemptors. Off Topic: anyone know the optimal way for kitting out 3 regular contemptors and a mortis? I would go all kheres but that gets boring pretty quick. Slips
1 Dual Kheres (Mortis), (2) 1 DCCW + 1 volkite culverin [NO MODEL FOR IT C'MON FW!] + 1 Plasma Cannon and 1 2x DCCW with Graviton in the hands. That leaves you with a 12 shot rending mortis, up to 4 Graviton Guns on relentless platforms (or you can shove some plasma blasters or heavy flamers in there if you want) for Haywiring things to death / making them stay put, 4+ S10 CC attacks, a plasma cannon to deal with 2+ saves and a culverin for horde control. May not be 100% optimized but I feel that this covers enough bases while having decent variety in weapons options. Oh and if you really wanted to, you could give them all CML's. The first pic is the icon for Emperor's Children, and the second pic is the Palatine Aquila, different from the regular Aquila with the wings raised higher and is usually portrayed with the thunder bolts. http://i.imgur.com/iRszjWc.jpg?1 *Edit* Another difference that I've seen is that it is either portrayed with no eyes on the eagle heads, or eyes for both, not just one like the regular Aquila. This seems like a really good idead, I had never considered graviton guns and their haywire effect before. Chainfist just don't give it to the Dual DCCW Dread because it has specialist weapon and some rules shenanigans means he wont get +1A for 2 CCW...or something. The Furioso Librarian Halberd-thing would be a pretty cool weapon to have on a Contemptor; haven't ever seen one on the Chassis before. Just a side note: Some of the FW arms for Box Dreads, particularly the CCWs like the Siege Drill and Seismic Hammer have the same connector piece as Contemptor Arms so you could easily use them as stand-ins for other weapons *cough*Contemptorchainfist*cough* and add some more variety to the lot. Emperor's Furor
I'm adding the UM brass etched to the basic contemptor for mine. I'd already ordered it a while ago so it's just been waiting around to be "legionised". Plus it had some casting problems on the shoulders so I'm hoping to cover up the blemishes that are left after I fixed it up with liquid green stuff and filing work.
