Luna Wolves assistance!

Hi guys! I'm in need of some assistance! My mate has recently started taking an interest into 40K and has his heart set on Orks, now he's never played before and is leaning towards a combat based army. My problem is my Iron Warriors list is maybe a bit too gun-heavy(as an IVth Legio list should be!) and I'm worried that he'll not do too well and lose interest.

I did look at doing a 40K force to use against him but quite frankly I'm too much in love with 30K, so I've decided to do a Luna Wolves army based on the Ullanor campaign! I'll more than likely tone the big stuff down at first until he is confident with the game and tactics etc.

Now what units should I include/avoid? I'm thinking tactical squads, support squads with flamers will be in there. Possibly some Cataphractii. I'll likely avoid Sicarans at the moment and artillery.

Does anyone have any ideas on the scheme as well? I'm thinking of doing them quite battle damage and worn!

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers!

Thanks! Just didn't want him having to charge at my gunline constantly, much rather he enjoys playing. Also gives me an excuse to do a loyalist legion!

I'm thinking 2x20 man Tacticals with Apothecaries, flamer support squad, maybe even a rotor cannon one as well. Then the obligatory Contemptor or 2!

I've decided to make them look really worn and battle damaged, they have been fighting millions of Orls after all!

I'm reading horus rising and not much mention of Ullanor. Seems like a fun idea. Basically anything goes since most of the legion is their. I see you have your eyes on some tactcal squads. Only thing is the rotor cannon. None of its abilities come of use. It's str 3 so your only wounding on 5's. Have you thought about heavy bolters. 30 str 5 shots that ignore all but mega nobs armor and can harm the light vehicles sound impressive. Though if your friend is just starting out then that might not be a good idea. Rotor cannon it is then!

Yeah, Volkites are a bad idea to use against a horde in an introductory game. For every shot listed on their profile, just double it and thats the potential wounds it can cause.

In small amounts, anything but the Culverin is safe, imo, since the Culverin is Heavy 4 and the whole squad has to take the same weapon. Meaning at 5 men minimum, thats 20 shots for a potential of 40 wounds at S6 Ap5. The rest are just single shot.

When your friend gets his chops and has a hang of the game? Go for it! Vaporize 30 Man Hordes in a single shooting phase with a single squad.

For now, I feel that Rotor Cannons actually have a place here, as much as I detest them... But I feel the better option is the Heavy Bolter or Autocannon that way you aren't drowning him in (as many) saves (if he takes any).

I'd also use flamers in limited Quantities. Don't just show up with a 10 Man Heavy Support Squad sporting all Heavy Flamers.

A Moritat might be a nice thing to pit him against; teach him target priority and such.

Maybe have the list be Assault Based as well? Actually use 30k Assault Marines or Reavers? As cool as their models are, stay away from Justaerin Terminators (Rules wise) they aren't worth it...

Another thing would be Graviton Rapiers to Slow his Green Tide down without Massacring them as you would with Quad Mortar Rapiers.

Having a points limit would help too :p

Thanks guys!

I'll probably start off at around 1000pts to get him used to the game. He is 100% getting a Bommer at one point so that gives me the opportunity to do a Fire Raptor or Storm Eagle eventually. I'd also like to include some units I never use in my Iron Warriors, so maybe some jet bikes?

Ideas on Rites of War?

This is very cool. I want to commend you on your sportsmanship and being a good friend.

Also, it seems like you have an awesome opportunity to build a very fluffy and interesting force without needing to worry about "build effectiveness" too much. That's a great place to be! What units do you think are cool? What makes you excited from the fluff or the modeling? That's the way to go here I think.

For a Rite of War I might recommend Pride of the Legion as it allows you to emphasize the "small veteran Legions" vs "giant horde of orks" concept in the game.

I like Rotary Cannons they look awesome. Plus they probally won't kill a tun of orks every turn.

Using Pride of the Legion could be a really good idea. Vets as troops are sort of like slightly better 40k tactical units, will help your friend see what a non 30k space marines are like.
