XIXth Legion WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thought I'd finally get a WIP up of my XIXth Legion force.

A bit of background is that they are one of the Predation Fleets sent out by Corax, however whilst many of the Predation Fleets felt betrayed, these Terran-born sons were proud to be called Raven Guard, and so still bear the Raven insignia. However they will be in the Pre-Corax gray armour, with black/white shoulder pads.

They have finally decided to return to the Imperium after finally needing a resupply, and so have not yet heard of the Heresy. Whilst lost in the warp they find the Beacon of Macragge seen in Unremembered Empire, and so travel towards it, where they will first learn of the Heresy and the 'Death' of Corax.

Excuse the dreadful writing of mine, but I attempted to write a bit of fluff msn-wink.gif

The air he breathed felt heavy, tasting of iron and over recycled. Many of the ships systems had gone offline since entering the warp, for a multitude of reasons, and the majority of the air recyclers were among them. They had been travelling blind for several weeks, the light of the Astronomican gone. The ship was crewed with but a handful of remaining brave men and women who fought to deliver their precious cargo, Astartes. For this they would go unrewarded, for it was both their duty and burden to bear. Another breath of the metallic air awoke Jaht, Centurion of the XIXth Legion, a Terran-Born son of Corax. The ship he traveled on was but one of five ships, all with similar conditions, all lost in the storm. They had set out decades before, outcasts to their legion, one of many Nomad Predation Fleets as they were known among the Legion, to bring the light of the Imperial Truth to the dark fringes of the Imperium. Many of the legionaries among these fleets felt betrayed by their Gene-Father, Jaht was not one of them. He understood the necessity of it all, and he still felt pride to be a battle-brother of the Raven Guard. He, like his Commander, and all of those legionaries that traveled with him still bore the emblem of the Raven, a reminder as to what they were. As he strode onto the bridge he heard the hushed whispers of the Commander, Shade-Captain Daegen, as he stood looking down at the captain of the ship, a man named Elias. Daegen turned to see Jaht enter and place his fist against his chest, the salute of the unification era. "A light has been found among the storm, we steer toward it" Daegen stated, a soft spoken man in stark contrast to his size and build. "What is this light, the Astronomicon?" Jaht questioned, for his hope had faded since the beacon had been lost. "I can not say, the Navigator does not believe so, but yet it is a sign of good fortune, we may yet survive this accursed journey." Daegon wished to be out of the warp as soon as possible, a sentiment shared by Jaht and all those aboard the ship for even Astartes felt unnerved as to what existed in the immaterium.

Centurion Jaht (just a veteran sergeant army-list wise), wanting to get the unification eagle head on his chest, so I may press mold one off one of the IF torsos.

The basing is a bit rough I know, need to clean up the edges a bit but I'm not great at doing bases so I like to keep them simple! Will be adding some tufts of 'autumn' foliage once they're all painted up.
More pictures to come later of the second tactical squad! I had plans to spray them today but the weather is bit crappy, so I'm not sure if I want to risk it. I'll be spraying them in the garage, would the wet weather outside affect the spray, or should I be okay?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I hope you enjoy my WIP just as much as I will, this is going to be my first ever completed army, and I've been collecting 40K on and off since the age of 7, so 12 years now tongue.png

I really like the look. I'm curious to see how you do the gray armour as it's something I've thought about myself.  Jaht looks pretty badass.  Are you going to do the swirls and that as markings on the armour or are going in a different directions?

I'm glad you like Jaht, I love the Hamath Kraatos figure and I was shaking as I cut him up as I really didn't want to ruin him! I would have preferred to have kept the 'greek lines' going across the collar area and at the bottom, but I don't have the skill to have kept them intact when shaving off the minotaur head on his chest.

Not too sure yet on the swirls, I can't decide whether just to highlight them a brighter gray than the rest of the armour or pick them out in gold or something. I think I will likely decide during painting him tongue.png

For the gray armour itself, I'm going to go for gray that isn't too light or too dark, more of a mid-tone, as the image of the XIXth legionary in extermination isn't very dark, it in fact looks pretty bright if you ignore all the shadows.

Many thanks, James

EDIT:

Thought I'd edit this post to save double posting.

I've just primed the figures with army painter spray but on a few it looks slightly thick in a few areas and thin in others, such as the base. The base is hardly covered in primer at all.

Its not overly thick, but I'm not really used to priming figures as I generally used to get somebody else to do it for me.

Should it "thin off" when it has dried, and also how long should I leave them to dry for before hitting them with the brush?

Ok, so I've got them primed up. The majority of the thickness mentioned in the previous post seems to have gone, but you can still my priming still leaves something to be desired unfortunately, but hopefully it will be ok.

I'm glad you like them!

So I painted one up, and as you can see I'm not a fantastic painter which I think might ruin the army, but I guess I can always strip them and start again if it gets to that.

This is honestly the first ever highlighed miniature I have done in the years of collecting warhammer, I normally go for the quick drybrush method but felt that it was lacking for such fine detailed FW models.

The armour is much darker than what I was intending, so I might paint another one up in a lighter shade of gray to compare them. Mind the base, its still a bit wet in this pic!

Hope you like him!

Any advice is greatly appreciated because I'm not very happy with how he turned out at the minute.

I have the GW airbrush I received as a christmas gift many years ago which I have not yet used. As I understand it the reviews for it are quite bad, but do you think it would suffice in just laying down a gray basecoat for the army? If not, what cheap airbrush/compressor would be recommended?

Thank you for looking, James

Sorry for double post but I have a small update!

Ive decided to strip the white primer and have ordered some army painter uniform grey primer, as it appears to be a closer shade of grey for what I am going for, and also makes it easier for me when painting as I wont have to put a basecoat of grey on the armour over the primer.

I've also ordered another 10 MK IV marines from forge world, and have just received a set of two raven guard upgrade sets that I won on ebay, which I shall be using in conjunction with the MK IV marines to build a veteran squad.

Here is the final two marines for the second tactical squad, just need to order an appropriate arm + banner to use as a vexilla on the one with no arms.

This is the first WIP veteran squad marine that Jaht will be leading, I really like this guy so far not sure why, but I think he will represent the "second in command" of the squad.

I've also started to build myself a figure to represent Alvarex Maun in my army list. He's going to be receiving a MK IV vox backpack and the red scorpions vanguard veteran culn power sword which I have ordered from a bits site.

Im looking for a figure to base a conversion of Kaedus Nex on, but not sure which one at the moment. The one I've got in my head is the loken mini, any thoughts/ideas for this one is very appreciated!

Thank you for looking! James.

Nice mix of parts you've got there and terran Raven Guards are always interesting to see. I can't give you any advice on the grey colour or the airbrush as I haven't used grey so much these last couple of years and never owned an airbrush. The guy you have painted doesn't look bad though, for a first highlighted model he looks pretty good. You could always go over the highlights again to make them thinner, it takes time to do it but it's usually worth the effort. smile.png

Thanks for the comments!

Currently got most of the primed stuff sitting in a fairy power spray bath ready for the grey primer when it arrives. I understand what you mean about the highlights, but I guess that just takes practice and a steady hand! Hopefully with the new shade of grey I will be using to prime them with the highlights wont look so out of place/bright compared to the actual armour colour!

  • 2 weeks later...

An update finally as seen as it has been a few weeks.

I stripped all the marines of their white primer and applied gray primer instead and have been working on a colour scheme. I am also going to place them on 32mm bases which I shall be painting before applying the marine as I think I'll find it easier that way. I have decided to keep the arms off and paint them separately, this is how the scheme looks so far:

I've also been working on a veteran squad:

For the veterans I think I am going to be painting their helmets white along with their left knee pad, which will have a black diagonal stripe going down it, similar to the red stripe on the guys kneepad on the false gods cover:

Thanks for looking, and I shall attempt to update more often than I currently am doing!

Apologies for the double post but I thought I'd stick a few arms on (with a tiny bit of superglue so i can rip them off again for painting) so that you can get a feel for how they will be posed!

Hope you like them, any comments would be appreciated!

I also decided to change what model would represent Jaht, as when I stripped the hamath kraatos mini it didnt go so well unfortunately, although he can still be salvaged so I will end up using him for something else I think.

However I cant decide on what head to use for him, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated, I've narrowed it down to two options:

Option 1

and Option 2

Many thanks, James!

By lapels do you mean the dangly bits? (I dont actually know what they are called ahaha) They are from anvil industry, they come with 5 strips but i come them down to 3 to fit better.

Also the hand is from the rapier crew i believe, i got it in an ebay win of multiple bits however so dont hold me to that!

I love what you have going here, James. Keep up the excellent stuff. It's nice to see someone attempt (and pull off) a Raven Guard force that doesn't rely on mostly MkVI builds. It's tough, but I really think you've got it. I look forward to seeing more.

I was originally going to have some mk VI bits in there, but I much prefer the mk IV armour, ever since seeing the red scorpion upgrade pack when it first came out all those years ago!

Again, the comments are very appreciated will hopefully have another update soon as I paint them.

However I can't decide what to get next, a mortis contemptor with twin kheres or a land raider and a squad of terminators?

Many thanks, James
