Crimson Fists project

Hello my friends,

First of all I would like to thank you, members of this great forum, Bolter and Chainsword for taking the time to look into my thread. It is my purpose here to provide a very long tutorial in how to go about the following things:

painting/shading/highlighting/masking while using airbrush

to show some use of oil paints and washes

to show how to correctly apply waterslide transfers on curved surfaces using microsol/set

I have been honing my skills in this areas for the last two years and a large resource in my learning, in fact the most significant was the internet. So, I decided to share my work with others in the hope that the circle of learning can continue.

First of all I would like to show you some picture of the mini I have assembled. He is still tentatively WIP and I'm going to spend a day with it on the armchair arm, so I can look at it and ponder over the next 24 hours or so.

The front and this is the direction he will be facing in regards to the light source of the mini.

Here you can see the construction of the banner pole. It is crude but it will be OK when painted I hope.

I sculpted with green stuff a templar cross. This leg area is a little damage but I can go over it with a nail file before painting and it will be fine.

If I may I would like to eplain something about the choices I made whilst building this model.

The model is mostly built from the standard kit. He has a mk. iv head from the Death Company box. Of course you have noticed the banner. I was able to acquire a rather imperfect example of the resin CF anniversary set for a good price. A great deal of the kit was unusable. Many of you will be familiar with the cons of finecast. The banner had extensive damage and as you can see on the picture, a large part of the back had to be remade using miliput due to my removing the original banner pole. There was no question about using brass rod. I may trust a plastic pole but I would never trust a finecast one to be sturdy enough. The new banner pole was made from brass rod and styrene tube. It was a little fiddlt but easy enough. The banner pole was topped off witha piece from the Tactical box.

The base was made from plasticard, milliput, styrene rod, stones and Vallejo Sandy Paste. As this is a Crimson Fist I added a little flavour by placing an Ork skull. I tried to bury it a little in the paste so that it is not too prominent.

Another choice was to make him a comparitively plain Venerable Dread. Crimson Fists have been hit hard and they have little left. I figured a Venerable Dread by the standards of the CF would not be as old as the ones owned by other chapters who have more at their disposal. So I made the decision to strip it back. I chose pieces from the kit that displayed the least artifice and removed the details on the leg guards.

I can see in the photo's some area's that need a little cleaning but it seems just some minor scraping and sanding plus some toothbrush scrubbing. I wonder should I add some rivets to the leg armour but I like them, plain so that I can apply some heraldy.

Tomorrow I will prime the model and then begin showing you some tutorial I hope, until then I would like some colour advice. I wanted to paint the helmet white as I think I like my veterans to have white helmets and it will help the head to pop. Is this sacriledge? I would also like some advice on what colour to paint the banner as I don't want to do it mainly blue. Ideas for the colour of the thing on the base he is stood on and the colour of the ground would also be interesting to hear.

Thank you for looking,

dat cross though!

seriously awesome work! you do Dorn proud.

Amazing work and look forward to everything you have to show, looks very promising smile.png

Thank you very much. I appreciate it and it gives me courage.

Hello again Space Marine friends. I have made some progress with my dreadnought. The process is slow because I like to wait for things to dry properly and not rush. Everything was taken apart and made into sub assemblies. I like this way of working. The pieces were all primed with Vallejo surface primer (black). I cannot recommend this enough. None of the noxious fumes, no humidity affecting cans and it's controllable using airbrush to place primer exactly where you want. Also it can be used straight from the bottle.

I decided to start with metallics as they are a problematic thing for me always. In truth I am a little lazy when it comes to metallics and tend to paint them as background areas and make a mini nice by making 'external' areas pop and keeping metalllic 'internal' areas pop. It starts like this. I follow the same process for all the meatl part but I decide to just show you the base for the process.

Using Vallejo Air Rust, I apply a base:

I then go back with a little of the black primer (it was black and handy, I would normally have just used a normal black)black and apply it into chosen area of shade:

I apply Vallejo Air Gunmetal to the outside edges or raised areas:

I apply Vallejo Air Chrome to the very edge:

I know apply some washes for fun and to making some subtle tonal variations. I apply two of the new Citdel washes. They are in my study and I don't want to getting up now to learning their names. They was the purple and brightest yellow ones that GW make:

http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt104/the_antipope/Picture%20006_1.jpg

Finally I apply a mix of Nuln Oil and Gloss varnish all over the area:

http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt104/the_antipope/Picture%20007_1.jpg

the gloss is needed because these areas are going to be masked and masked and masked. The coat of colour need to be stable and tough. Tomorrow though I think I will apply some straight Nuln Oil to some surface to make shadow heavier and then gloss again to some.

You can see now, all the little piece standing in my cork.

Hoping it is not so boring for you to see my process. :)

Not even remotely boring-- I appreciate those who are willing to take the time to talk shop as it were, and describe the various processes they go through on models.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you use for the shell casings on the dreadnought's base?

I do not mind you asking any questions at all. I believe by dint of collecting space marines, the idea is we are all brothers no? Anyway.

To your question the mystery is not so large and maybe you disappoint. It is simply think styrene rod cut into 4mm sections carefully. It takes around ten minutes for me to do that part. ph34r.png

I go on with this Dreadnought.

Early in the process it is normal to feeling like nothing is much happening until finally the results speak to themselves.

I started by masking. I like masking. I mask with ordinary decorator tape and some kind of soft children clay. Some parts not masking was needed but most part they needed.

http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt104/the_antipope/Picture%20009.jpg

Everything is sprayed with a very dark greyblue and most parts are gloss varnished again until they because further masking they needed.

However four parts (engine, body, legs and leg armour (left) can have their highlight and shade apply now because they required no masking further.

I hope you can see on the pictures. I shaded with the basecolour mixed with black, then highlighted with a navy blue then a brighter blue. It is important to keep the darker blue here because I do not want him to look like ultramarn. In real life there is tangible difference. I hope you can see on pics.

To a degree I can assemble the legs and then stand him in the base. Seeing the blue and the metal together can help me to make some choices about the base.

If you have any question you can ask me as I am a nice man. Also if anything has an idea for the base colours then I am still open to my mind.

Now I go to smoke because I want to relax a while with some novel.

The mini starts to come to life. Airbrush work has finished on the legs, one kneepad and the entire torso. It is all still very rough so I can clean with normal brush later. After airbrush stages, arguably there is even more work with normal brush. I became a little bored and began the heraldry on the knee. Tomorrow I will finish to this extent the arms and feet and then it is time for totally new stages. :)

For some reason pics look a bit misty. Taken by ipad. I will take some better pics tomorrow.

Thank you for looking.
