Newbie looking for help with Style of Army

Vanquishers are nice and very cool, but BS3 single shot is the problem - at least with the battle cannon and demolisher you're probably going to hit something (and more than one). Hull stripping is usually the more reliable way of knocking out armour and volume of fire is what Guard does well. The Vanquisher needs bit juicy targets to be most effective so against light armour that you can easily destroy by other means it'd be a waste - two Vanquisher's even more so!

I'm new to the world of Imperial Guard, I have Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Tau, Necrons, and now Militarum Tempestus. My armies are all intended to be fast moving, hard hitting, assault forces.

I chose to build my armies around real world military thinking. This can work very well (with the right units) or very badly. I've had opponents declare victory against my null deployment (only to be snubbed by the rules), and then lose badly to my Wolves when I podded in and blew up all his fancy toys, (vindicators and land raiders).

Don't underestimate the value of transports. The tau had a tactic called fish of fury (now defunct because reasons), where they'd move two devilfish up, dump out the troops, use the 'fish for cover while shooting under them (because 'fish are skimmers and you used to could do that). That's not a thing anymore, but the idea is still the same. Use the transports to move up the field (T1 12" move, T2, 6" move and disembark). This gets them in place to provide an effective base of fire, and you get the chimera to give them a bit more punch against light vehicles. The vehicles can also be used to shield your squishy men (put the chimera between them and something that the guardsmen aren't shooting at).

Then there's Valkyries. at 125 points a pop, they're probably one of the best fliers in the game. They can carry 12 models, they can be upgraded for a variety of roles (Add HB door guns, or Multiple Rocket pods for a large blast of frag, or a lascannon to up the anti-armor ability). It can deep strike a unit along its flight path (dangerous terrain tests if you scatter), and it can hover to drop off troops safely. They are so versatile and so cheap points wise. Even if you don't put anything in them, take two for support.

As far as AM goes, your CCS can provide you with some good support options. The Master of ordinance is annoying, being able to drop a battle cannon every turn makes him a target in my eyes.

My lists have all been infantry heavy recently, but guard lends itself to armored cavalry really well. You might try running some transports to get your guys up the field, since you don't want to gunline. Unfortunately those are really the only options, Foot slogging, Mechanized Infantry, or Air Assault.

I wish you luck and happy wargaming, looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thank you for all your input guys, im going to let this post die a death as you have given me enough ideas to put my first list together and i thank you for that. Ive made a topic in the army lists page to get some feedback on a list as a whole which can be found here.
