simison
Quick question, in Vengeful Spirit, we see Leman Russ play a board game against Malcador and then Loken. Can anyone tell me what it's called? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/ Share on other sites
Dosjetka
I haven't read that novel, but could it be Regicide? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3958664 Share on other sites
Chaeron
Hnefatafl? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3959057 Share on other sites
Conn Eremon
I haven't read that novel, but could it be Regicide? I believe it was this. It is mentioned elsewhere too. This game is Hnefatafl: pages 53-56. It's devised by Russ. Similar premise. Dosjetka
That name sounds like an Icelandic volcano, in the sense that it's just as unpronounceable. Anyway, so Hnefatafl is basically a Fenrisian version of Regicide? simison
Thanks for the info. Hmm, I don't suppose they explain when Russ invented this game? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3959388 Share on other sites

Anyway, so Hnefatafl is basically a Fenrisian version of Regicide? The game itself does exist in the real world: it involves trying to get your king to escape the board, whilst besieged by double the number of attackers. I would suppose it's an appropriate comparison, as there is a similar mechanic involved, but they are different games! Chaeron
Thanks for the info. Hmm, I don't suppose they explain when Russ invented this game? From my reading, it stems from about the 4th century, rather than being created by Russ himself, originating in Scandinavia. Whether the game is exactly the same or not remains to be seen, but the way I've seen it described within the book and literature suggests it probably is, or part of the wider family of 'tafl' games. The reasoning behind playing is how one could potentially lay low a primarch - the intention of the game has a similar premise to their desired course of action. I've not played it mind - does look like fun! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3959398 Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
Russ didn't say he invented the game, just that variant of it. I imagine the native Fenrisian versions wouldn't have the intricate mechanical, puzzle box board. simison
Gotcha. Well, as interesting as the one is spelled, I think I'll go with Regicide this time. Lucien Eilam
The Vikings had regular chess too - Skáktafl - if you wanted a Fenrisian word for Regicide. "tafl" can refer to the entire genre of board games. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3959431 Share on other sites
simison
Interesting, but I was simply picking a board game for a last meeting between Alexandro's and the Emperor. Hnefatafl sounds like a game to be played between the brothers instead of father/son. Chaeron
It's a precursor to Chess though really - so there's every possibility that they could. But naturally, in your narrative - go with what fits! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303808-board-game/#findComment-3959513 Share on other sites
Frosco Toppings
They were actually playing Twister. It was all going well until Russ rage quit when Malcador farted.
