Emperor's Furor
I've just received some Tamiya paints I was planning to use for a heresy Alpha Legion project and I was wondering whether anyone knew whether the basic X16 purple is glossy or matte? I got the Tamiya Clear and Tamiya Flat Base, Thinner and X16 Purple. I'm trying to do a scheme similar to the one below. http://warhammerworld.games-workshop.com/wp-content/uploads/SEDITIONS_GATE_dustjacket_FINAL_CMYK.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303838-anyone-familiar-with-tamiya-paints/ Share on other sites
Bung
I dont have that purple but some other paints of the X-series, and normaly they tend not to be glossy, but arent real matte either. They tend to have a look like some Vallejo Game Color. The Clear color will be shiny as hell if your layer to much with it. Dom_
IIRC, tamiya paints that are just 'X-##' are satin esque paints. Gloss paints are always labeled as such, e.g. X-18 is semi-gloss black. The 'XF-##' are all matte/flat. I have the XF-4 and its labeled as Flat Green. JGeils81
I have some Tamiya Clear Red for blood/gore but have yet to use it. I used to use Tamiya paints alot when I would build car/military models but I dont think I ever used the X series. MajorKhaos
The X16 is a gloss purple. Really nice colour too. X colours are GLOSS, XF are flat. You can use the X-22 Flat base to mix with the Purple to reduce the gloss, if you do so, use *very* sparingly and whatever you do, do NOT use Flat base as a Matt Varnish. EDIT: using that Tamiya purple also has an advantage, in that you can easily wash the mini's and get the recess detail done nicely without affecting the *pop* of the purple, really useful if you're going to do a few units of troops. Gurth
whatever you do, do NOT use Flat base as a Matt Varnish. This bears repeating enough that I decided to quote it Far too many people buy a bottle of Flat Base and don’t read any instructions, thinking it’s a matt varnish, then make forum posts along the lines of “I applied Flat Base to my model and the whole thing turned white! WTF?!” Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/303838-anyone-familiar-with-tamiya-paints/#findComment-3963451 Share on other sites
