The Sons of Horus

“And across the galaxy Humanity cheered, for now was the closing days of the Great Crusade, a time where there would be an end to the constant warfare that ensnared all of Mankind. The Golden Age of The Imperium was finally at hand. A time where The Emperor would eternally guide Humanity to prosperity; ironically then how those cheers for this Golden Age turned into a deafening scream for salvation. But their screams went unheard.… For The Emperor was only paving His way to Godhood and He has cast aside humanity and His Sons to obtain it. Now the truth has been revealed and now the true savior of mankind has raised his banners against his Father. His name is Horus, and he is The Warmaster. It is Horus who will cast down his Father’s False Imperium built upon lies and deceit, and it is Horus who will save Humanity from His Father’s Tyranny. Even if the Galaxy must be destroyed to do so, so be it.

“Let the Galaxy Burn!”

Brothers,

I have been a very long time lurker here on the forums and finally decided to create an account and join the community. When FW announced they were doing the Horus Heresy I knew that it was time to commit myself fully to the will of Warmaster. So over the last two and half years I have been steadily creating my Sons of Horus Legion, my goal is for a 5000 points Legion army. Currently I’m sitting on about 3000 points so I’m over half way there!

I guess the intent of this thread is to show of the work that has already come to pass and projects that are for the future, battle reports (If I can find people to play as I’ve only been focused on hobby aspect and its can be intimidating to find a gaming group) and create fluff for my army in the downtime as I can only do an order or two a year. The road is well travelled so far (regardless of how many SoH paint schemes are tried and retried (damn you sea green!)) and seeing all of the great and inspiring work on these forums really makes you smile as a hobbyist as there are so many different ideas always on the go and this community is very supportive. I may not be the best painter (only been painting for three years), or the best general (still waiting on my first real game) but the pride of seeing your collection start from few models like Abaddon & Loken to over 3000 points really takes you back and I felt the need to share it with the community who understand the craziness and addiction of the Heresy Train.

We might as well start big so……

Horus Lupercal

Without a doubt I squealed like a teenage girl when I saw that Horus himself was finally released. I then squealed again, this time in rage when I found that the mail carrier left my FW box outside my house without it being signed for, thankfully it went undamaged and was intact. After partially assembling him, I stopped dead in my tracks for a few days. How could you do such a thing you might ask? Well I was really intimidated by the undertaking I was just about to start on. I mean not only is this Horus, the sole character that got me into 30k in the first place, but this is the center piece to my whole army and I had just started to learn how to highlight! Well long story short I took it one part at a time starting with the gold edging and then going from there. It took me about 4 weeks to finish the model up minus the display base (still working on it) but what a piece to paint. After finishing Horus and knowing that I just climbed that mountain, I took a good moment to stare. Well it felt like I climbed Everest and saw the sun coming up.

Abaddon & Loken

These were the first inductions to my legion project. Talk about starting off being through into the deep end right away. Nothing like getting some of the most iconic characters to start your legion project. Abaddon wasn’t to bad to paint, but Loken, ugh that was a test that was failed a few times before it finally became more passable. Loken became the guinea pig of my colour scheming at the start. Loken is one of my favorite characters from the BL series and painting him (numerous times) was fun. Cleaning the paint off him after a few failed attempts, not so much . Well let’s just say that some of the paint cleaning and scrubbing resulted in him losing some details - Well I just call it battle damage now. I had to return to Loken with my final paint scheme I created after finishing up my tactical and Tactical Support squad.

Thank you all for the warm reception.

As for the sea Green I used the Vallejo USMC tank crew 35% and 65% Sotek Green then washed with Coelia Greenshade. I ended up making an empty pot to mix just in case it's not exact every time msn-wink.gif. But I have 5 different items with the green and I can't tell the difference so it has worked out so far.

The Justaerin Terminators

I love these models, without a doubt one of my favorites in my army. My apologies for the poor photos I have to use a cellphone camera.

It's been a busy few months here at this end of galaxy, but I've been looking in from time to time and it's really impressive to see all the great work here on the forum. That being said I have several photos to upload I'll start with my Reavers.

Reavers:

Well I got these of eBay and to my horror they were recasts, suffice to say I learned my lesson. So making the best out of a bad situation I painted them up in my 1st Company colours. I'm waiting for FW to release some MK II jump packs (someday) to fully finish them.

Spartan Assault Tank:

To round off my 1st company scheme I present to you my Spartan, my god the tracks were a real pain on this thing. I have yet to buy some etched brass for some decals but other than that this beast is done. I have this as the personal land raider of Maloghurst, now if only FW would release him....

I've got more photos to load so stay tuned as I'm currently working on my latest project, the first thing I've bought in nearly a year.

Legion Tactical Squad:

Well it took a long time to get the right kind of green and I'm pretty happy with it, the only concern is with the shade doesn't seem to give it a nice smooth look. However we are our own worst critic; after all the failed greens and cleaning a few guys lost some fingers.

Support Squad:

CHOOM FOR THE CHOOM GOD. I always find a way to include this squad in all my lists. I left the right knee pads black to show them as a support squad.

Brothers and Sisters,

Next Saturday my FLGS is throwing a 1500 pts. Highlander event. Not having played many games with my Sons I find this as the perfect opportunity to Unleash my Legion in the Warmaster's name. If time permits I intend to take pictures and notes for some quick Battle report summaries and post them here.

My 1500 Pts. List is:

Onslaught Formation

Garviel Loken

x14 Tactical Marines
Vexilla
Sgt has Artificer armour and Power sword

x8 Tactical Support Marines
x7 Volkite Calivers
Sgt has Scanner and CCW.

Contemptor Mortis
x2 Kheres Autocannons

Sicaran Battle tank
Lascannon sponsons, Armoured Ceramite

Fire Raptor

Reaper Battery

Spartan Assault Tank
Flare Shield, Armoured Ceramite

That takes me to exactly 1500 pts., I know it has a small model count but I believe that I have enough firepower. Either way I expect to have lots of fun.

On a tactical note I've been running a few simulates against my 40k Blood Angels that are currently in the works and Loken had a great round against a squad of Death Company taking out 4 with ease in a single round. His high initiative with his Paragon blade and merciless fighter rule can really catch you off guard.

Update on my Fire Raptor

Fire Raptor

After hearing the horror stories of some people's experiences with the Fire raptor & Storm Eagle I was put off on purchasing one for a long while, then after still wanting one I cracked and purchased one anyway. Well I was blown away by how straight the molds came out, so much so that I might purchase a Storm Eagle for one of my next Legion vehicles.

I also decided to rebase my Tactical & Support Squad. I find the 32mm bases much better for those of you who may be wondering if the switch is worth it. I have a current dilemma with putting Loken on a 32mm since he wont fit the diorama with Abaddon - I'm currently looking into magnets for this issue.
