Photo quality isn't great (read: it's awful!), but a couple of really quick shots to celebrate forty-eight models pin washed!!

So happy to have got that all done. Next up: black on weapons and shoulder pads. Figure I can make some serious in-roads by the end of the weekend!

That's definitely an accomplishment!

Pin washing takes such effort but it's generally worth it - I always get caught up in the cleanup part, making sure things blend well enough. It looks like you haven't had too much trouble in that department at least. Just be wary of that next step in basecoating..

Thanks, brother! Kind words keep me motivated to push on!

For these models, I've basecoated and then pin washed - there won't be any blending going on. This is meant to be a fairly simple but clean paint job, essentially. I'll be looking to put these models up on eBay once they're done, so I'm not going all-out in painting them. That said, pin washing is currently about the limit of my painting ability - I haven't really done much in the way of blending or anything.

I'd like to check what you mean about being wary of the next step in basecoating. Ultimately I'd love to work in some blending to my painting - I'm just not at that skill level yet. Can you explain what you would be doing to blend the shade in?

Ah yeah, preparing stuff for eBay definitely goes in a different category than things we're adding to our own collection! I've got some Eldar stuff I'm getting in a trade that will receive quite the same treatment in the end. Hopefully that will result in a nice little bit of bonus cash for more Blood Angels!

As for painting I admit its been about a year since I've done any work, so I'm a little rusty. The best advice I can give for blending is to practice a bit on a test model and use many thin layers to accomplish your goals. There are some great guides online that will give much better advice than I can, but the above is definitely a good place to start. Using thin layers to clean up the edges of pin washing can give nice results as well - particularly since washes do some natural blending on their own.

As for the 'next step in basecoating' I was just going on about the obvious: If you mess up you'll have to redo the red and pin washes! A pet peeve of mine after one does a great deal of effort, then a little slip sets you so far back.

So I had to pick up some extra hours at work over the weekend to earn pennies for a holiday we're planning in a couple of months. Came home feeling a bit frustrated I was going to miss out on a day of hobby and found this waiting for me:

Best. Wife. Ever.

Quick update - have got all but one Tactical Squad's shoulder trims painted black. Tomorrow I'll get the last ten set of trims black and then start working on either chest eagles or weapons. Plan is to go through the base black in stages - shoulder trims, weapons, chest eagles, then whatever else is needed. Rubber seals on joints, mouth grill, that kind of thing. Will mean I'm not stuck on any given model for too long feeling I'm not making any progress.

For now, here are the three Captains:

I wish I had proper "before" pictures of these guys when they showed up. I'll see if I can get a decent quality image!

Anyhoo, onwards!

All shoulder trims have been based black. Recent changes at work mean I'm now working over 55 hours a week, so painting has slowed down.

I got twenty models' chest eagles and rubber seals based in black today. Hoping to finish off the remaining models tomorrow (after a 12 hour shift!).

Photos will follow in due course!

Wow.  Been a while since an update - as was mentioned in a previous post, work severely got in the way of hobby for a while!!

Got most of the black done on the models. I haven't yet done the bolter cases because I wanted to get the silver done before I put the black over the top. Now have two Tactical Squads silvered up (the silver was kind of slapped on in a few places because it'll be covered up with black in the next stage) and sitting at this stage:

I'm not aiming for any painting awards with these guys, but I feel they're coming along nicely. The plan is still to get the army looking decent and put it up for sale on eBay once they're finished. The whole army is one big experiment in refurbishment!

I also got two Rhinos cleaned up about as much as I'm going to do and sprayed with primer. I do want to go over a couple of spots with sandpaper to smooth them down and there are a few details to add - one of the smoke launchers is missing a pipe, for example - before they're reading for painting. But, given the state they were in when I had them delivered, I'm delighted with where they are now!

Next stuff for cleaning will be the Land Raider and Bike Squad. Here are some before photos for future reference (I've been wishing I had proper "before" photos of the rest of the models. These models will give you an idea what state things were in!):

Now, I hasten to add that the painting on these models is by no means the worst I've ever seen. I'm actually really impressed at some of the things the previous painter attempted, even where it looks like the application could have been a bit better executed. Details like painting the lenses on targeters, painting script on the purity seals and adding transfers to the model are all reasonably advanced painting processes. The bases haven't been caked in flock - there are small clumps and it's clear what the previous painter was aiming for.

My problem is that while there are some more advanced techniques being attempted, a lot of the basics are being ignored. I've stripped each model a minimum of three times before I felt I could start priming it - the basecoats are absolutely caked on. Every single model has involved a wealth of mould-line removal. There has been a hefty amount of removing "conversions" where stuff like grenades has been glued onto models nearly randomly.

My target with these models is simple: strip them down to a point when I can paint them; simplify the conversions and tidy them up where possible (or remove them entirely where I can't make it seem natural); paint them in a simple and tidy colour scheme to get them to a nice tabletop version and enjoying a new and happy lease of life.

It's been a heck of a project so far and I have to say I'm enjoying myself immensely!

Onwards!

Two more Tactical Squads and the Captains to do now!

I totally forgot the helmets on these guys will be yellow and got so carried away with painting silver that I started detailing their helmets by mistake!

Onwards!

I really like what you have been doing here. I always like to see eBay rescue projects. Keep up the great work! laugh.png

Thank you, brother!

Appreciate the kind words. All feedback is good feedback!

  • 2 weeks later...

Some progress has been made. I've managed to pull myself away from Dawn of War 2 (so far have a level 11, level 14, level 16, a level 20 and a level 9 elite character following the last couple of weeks!) by embarking on a mission to build a couple more buildings and finally managed to divert that focus back to my models.

Based the models on their actual bases today. Wasn't feeling the paint so much so I just finished off the silver on the one remaining squad and then went back over all 45 models to make sure I'd painted the bottom of all the pistol grips. I severely hadn't. Le sigh.

Anyway, here are some progress photos:

We're getting there, slowly. Next step was supposed to be getting the black on all the weapons, but I don't know if I can take this level of batch painting much longer. It may be a better idea to finish off the squads one at a time to save myself going completely insane....

Having decided to do batches of squads (rather than doing each stage on every single model), I give to you: one bad photo to show progress on the first Tactical Squad:

And a couple of better photos to show the standard each mini is at, taken with a little more care:

I've painted the weapons black, done a fairly rough edge highlight with grey, put gold on the details that needed it and washed the blacks and metallics with Nuln Oil.

I'm now going to go highlight the silvers and golds a little to help them pop, then will either do parchment or leather across the unit. Then the second of the two, followed by eyes. Oh, and the Sergeant's face. Maybe. If I have the paints (though I don't think I have any paints for skin at the moment!)....

:)
