AceofCase
So, after collecting space marines for awhile, I've decided to start collecting some Guard. While I've never really liked the look of the Cadians or Catachans, I did find the victoria minatures shop and decided to pick up a squad of the Arcadians to start me off. I've been working on ideas, and I have narrowed it down to three paint schemes. I'd like to get your advice before I paint up any more of these guys. http://i.imgur.com/sVgo6uA.jpg?2 The first one is Castellan Green for the flak armor, and then Death World Forest for uniform. Middle is Zandri Dust for armor, Death World Forest for the uniform. Last one is Castellan Green for the armor, and then Zandri Dust for the uniform. I got them all with a quick wash of the Agrax Earthshade, but I haven't gone back to highlight any. I do apologize for poor quality, my camera and computer have decided not to get along, so I'm stuck using my phone for now. I appreciate any help, and I'll be more than happy to post the rest of these guys together when I finish. steellegionnaire85
I like all three test models. You need to think about what fluff you want. Also you need to think what you want for basing material. Depending on if you want a desert, forrest or jungle pattern. I am currently using zandri dust as a base for my steel legion and I am going to use either black or green web gear I haven't decided yet. AceofCase
Spent a little more time on them, so we now have the left and center guardsmen from the original photo mostly finished. Just need basing and a few highlights. http://i.imgur.com/8gLtbaa.jpg Fluff is still completely undecided! It's the hardest part in making an army, but definitely the most rewarding. I'm gonna have to spend some time thinking on it, but I see myself leaning towards the one on the right in this picture. The scheme is just unique enough from a lot of the others I've seen. WarriorFish
Welcome to the Guard Ace! We like Victoria round here so expect to find lots of eager comrades following your progress ;) Your models look good, the colour schemes are solid but I prefer the right one too - have you thought about what basing you'd like to do? Don't worry about the fluff as that can be slowly built up over time - models are the most important! Have you thought about the style of Guard army you'd like to build? The Guard codex has a huge amount of variety so you can run all sorts of armies and perhaps just as importantly justify them with fluff :) Whatever you need just ask and someone will be able to help (WarriorFish guarantee!), but a good start is our Tactica Generalis :D I look forward to seeing your army come together and in case you fancy a little bit of a challenge we also have a painting competition running currently... AceofCase
I'll probably go for a pretty simple desert base with tufts of light grass. I think it'll work with the models pretty well. I'm leaning towards a couple of platoons, with support from a few tanks and maybe some mounted veteran squads. I really like the order system, as a regular marine player, I really love the idea of support HQ units. It's quite different from the melee monsters I normally field. I may expand down the line and put together some jump troops as an ally force using the Elysian army list. I would use it as my main force, but I love the vehicles that the codex has access to. My only problem right now that I've come across is a lack of vox casters. I can't find any good third party bits, and buying them from bits shops online may get a tad expensive. Any ideas would be really helpful on that. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304005-working-on-an-new-am-force/#findComment-3963914 Share on other sites
Simon Ros
Welcome to the guard AceofCase. I'm new myself, so haven't got much in the way of advice. But the Victoria Miniatures models are really nice. Looking forward to following your work. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304005-working-on-an-new-am-force/#findComment-3963987 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
That sounds like a good base to me, the tufts of grass will look good and provide some detail to them. You could put a few small rocks in too :) Your army plan is solid, thanks to orders and Vets infantry forces can do a lot. You'll soon branch out into other aspects though as we all do  For Voxes I'm not sure, short of tapping up a local Guard player who may have spare? A vox could be something small or even inbuilt with fancier technology so you have plenty of options in how you represent this. Perhaps your Marine's bits box could help?
