TopToffee
After a couple of years of collecting and never really getting a game in, I finally arranged a game down my FLGS. We agreed that we could take whatever we fancied, so long as it was a bound army and didn't take more than 2 detachments or formations. The list I went with was: Thunder Lord Power Fist Wolf claw Fellclaw's Teeth 2 fen wolves Iron Priest TWM 4 cyber wolves Murderfang Lucia Drop Pod Bliz Dread Lucius drop pod Ven dread Plasma cannon Great Wolf Claw Drop pod TWC 4 cav 1 PF, 2 SS WC and SS on pack leader TWC 4 cav 1 PF, 2 SS WC and SS on pack leader Gerantius Didn't know what I'd be facing, but it ended up being Necrons, which I hadn't really considered to be honest! Don't know why, but I think probably because they barely existed when I was last playing the game. I don't remember exactly what he was taking, but I think he had a couple of units of warriors (about 30 total). Two lords 8 wraiths Ghost ark Destroyer cult formation plus three heavy destroyers 10 tomb blades 2 doom scythes 5 deathmarks Think that's about it. When he lined up that lot my first thought was "Christ thats a lot of high speed units, and I'm massively outnumbered" So I won the roll, set up first and chose to take first turn. He tried to steal and failed. The two lucius pods dropped in, right in front of his lines, to try to draw fire and block his movement a bit. The knight moved forward, and the two packs of TWC moved forward then ran (11" and 9"), making for cover as best they could. The only bit of shooting was the knight (I forgot about the stubber in first turn), who fired at one of the doom scythes and did... NOTHING. His first turn he took all the hull points off the drop pods, killed a cyber wolf, a fen wolf and one TWC (storm shield and BP). He then charged Gerantius with his wraiths, which I thought was suicidal. To my horror though, he took five(!) hull points off the knight, while all I managed to do was kill 2 wraiths. Turn two (after Gerantius made his IWND roll), the Lord's TWC pack charged into the wraiths to help out Gerantius, and between them they wiped the unit. The IP split off and charged the ghost ark, exploding it. The TWC pack that he left failed a 4" charge, with fleet! His second turned shot pretty poorly, killing a TWC model from the stranded pack, and taking only one hull point from Gerantius despite opening up with almost everything. Turn three everything got back into assault, the axe dread into the tomb blades (doing spectacularly little), murderfang into the deathmarks (getting 9 or 10 attacks and wiping them). Ven dread podded in, fired plasma cannon into the Necrons that were pinned after the ghost ark exploded, rolling treble one to wound :-( TWC and Gerantius wiped the 18 strong unit of warriors and Lord - I had been hoping it might have taken two rounds. His turn three, he finally wrecked Gerantius, along with Murderfang and the Ven dread, but was utterly unable to do anything to the TWC. Start of my 4, I made a long charge with the Lord's TWC, into three units of the destroyer cult, pinning them right in the corner of his deployment zone, he tapped the table and we called it a day. So it was great to get back into the game, and even better to do so with a win - and against an army that really had me worried when I saw it! In terms of our units, the TWC were every bit as mean as everyone says they are. I've also just realised that I was only playing them as WS4, despite being taken from CoF. But jeez, the speed they close with the enemy is unbelievable - I think the Necron player was shocked how little time he had before they were on him. I really liked the IP with TWM too - he really does just need to look at a vehicle for it to disappear! Gerantius was kind of a bit disappointing to be honest. Feel like he probably just rolled badly, but yeah, I was expecting him to wreck more face. Think I may try him one more time, but if he doesn't improve, I might swap him for void claws and a storm wolf (same points total) Murderfang (combo'd with Lucius pod) was nasty. SO many attacks!! But the shield dread was underwhelming. I may have chosen my target badly, but just feel like he doesn't have enough attacks to be truly dangerous. And the less said about the Ven plasma dread the better, after that performance! Valerian
Congratulations! Glad you got a game in after all of these years. What mission did y'all play? Agreed on the Dreadnought assessment; the regular ones don't get nearly enough attacks. TopToffee
We played "Relic". Should have mentioned that. The relic hadn't yet been picked up, but he had absolutely no way left of getting to it, while it would have been fairly easy for one of the TWC packs to get free of combat and pick it up by my next turn.He picked up 1st blood for killing a drop pod, while i had Linebreaker and Slay the Warlord. In terms of the dreadnoughts... any recommendations (considering the list i was running) of what you'd do with the points if i were to drop one or both of the non-Murderfang dreads? (190pts if i dropped the plasma one, 385 if i dropped both) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304023-so-i-played-my-first-proper-game-since-3rd-ed/#findComment-3963750 Share on other sites
