Noctus Cornix
Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen. So, as some of you may know, not so long ago I closed down my painting blog on this site with the promise of a new one in the works. While those logs will absolutely still be coming (one of which hopefully soon) I decided that I wanted to make a little something for the time being to get some feedback on commission work and things I paint to ensure my sanity. As you all know, I relish comments and criticisms because they really help me along with my painting. I always want to get better and I'm not going to get that way if all I get is a 'good job'. You guys are always extremely helpful and supportive, and I appreciate. So now for the plastic and resin, yes? First up is a test model I finished up last night for one of my commissions. I'm painting up a squad of Death Korps of Krieg Assault Brigade Grenadiers for a friend of mine. The paint scheme was his idea and honestly, I'm rather proud of how he came out. Client says he loves it so I'm pretty satisfied, but is there anything that we missed that you guys see? http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150227_014952_zpso0rqu19g.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150227_015002_zpsann0ubql.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150227_015010_zpskgoytfcr.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150227_015018_zpsrgvllvii.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150227_015038_zpswyt5h7v5.jpg Lemme know what you think. Teetengee
Apart from the mold line, it looks great! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304034-noctus-cornixs-commission-and-paint-loghow-far-weve-come/#findComment-3963832 Share on other sites
Argent aquila
I love the drab colors you have on the guardsman, very nice! If i'd change any little thing, it'd be to black out the base rim, just personal preference with snow or light colored bases. great work! Noctus Cornix
Thanks, guys. Glad you like them. No, there was no conversion involved. It's the standard look of the Death Korps Grenadiers. Thanks for pointing out the mold line. The_Chaplain
If I'm to be completely honest/blunt-- I'm not sure if I like the glow effect you're trying to put on the goggle lenses of the gas mask. There isn't anything special or high tech about a gas mask- in my opinion, the lenses should just be painted as a lens, most likely with a darker glass to them to shield the eyes. Korps have that great skull aesthetic going with their gas masks, play up that fact. Make the lens look blackened like a skull's eye sockets in classical art depicitons. Unless the client wants the glow effect that is. Feel free to ignore all that though, it's just my two cents. The color palette of the uniform itself is simply aces by the way. Noctus Cornix
Yeah, the glow effect (or atleast my poor attempt to make one) is at the request of the client. The lore for the Assault Brigade is their called the Phantom Korps. They specialize in assaulting their enemies through dense fogs, rainstorms, and blizzards, be it Natural or artificial. The glow of their eye lenses is a unique aspect of the elite brigade and a blue lantern is their symbol. It's a Terror tactic. Noctus Cornix
Here's a new update, a little something I painted for myself. His name is Bazarus, the Tearless, he who does not weep, champion of Nurgle, First Blade of the Cleaved, loyal vassal of the Ruined King. That is all I will offer you guys for now. I'll save his fluff and story for the official Chaos thread when 's complete. Until then, enjoy. http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163010_zpssttj8cww.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163028_zpszepozenm.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163039_zpsf2di6gf8.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163104_zpsqgn4k63n.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163148_zpsmatp1rcv.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150301_163225_zpsfsxpoco3.jpg Enjoy. KrautScientist
Hmm, well, judging by all the blood and pus, he does weep after all -- just not from his eyes ;) Smartassery aside, that is indeed an excellent model! Noctus Cornix
Bases need some touching up and I think the glow of the lenses do too, but here's the Grenadier squad all done and completed. http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_052754_zps9s8umf5g.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_052835_zps4kynd7vp.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_052924_zps2kgsxmgq.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_052941_zpspdzuigaj.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_053005_zps2xhvoqug.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_053038_zpsn590rqla.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20150311_053106_zpsbzsvpp1r.jpg Comments and Criticism are always welcomed and adored. Noctus Cornix
It's been... quite a while, hasn't it folks? I know this may seem off, but I would like to informally apologize for my absence. I have been going through things over the course of this year that, for the longest time, completely killed my motivation to do anything, much less the hobby. I went through a serious state of depression and I have, for quite a while, been trying to get back into this hobby. I have neglected my armies, my commision work (which thankfully my client is such a damn great person that he was willing to let it simply be on hold while I got my life together), and even my activity on this board. I've been simply lurking and rarely even posting for so long and it really is such a disheartening thing for me. With that in mind, I'm trying to drag myself back out from the pits of where I once was and trying to pull myself back into the hobby. First up, more importantly than my own work because I owe him so much for his patience and generosity, is I'm working on the commission work for my client. Set of work to be completed? Abaddon, Garviel Loken, 5 Justaerin Terminators, and Warmaster Horus himself. Now I know this might be rather jumping into the deep end from the start, but hell I might as well... So here's what I've gotten done so far. Everything has been modeled and primed. No particular work done on the Justaerin yet, but I have Abaddon all done and Loken's done except for his base. (not including the set base for the two of them that I need to do). I spent a very hefty portion of the night working on the more time and focus intensive model tonight... and I really must say I'm rather proud of how he's coming along. As you know, comments and criticism are always welcomed and encouraged. Hopefully this helps keep me going... http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20151005_034810_zpsri7hxdg5.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20151005_034951_zpsusg1voy7.jpg http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac352/Noctus-Cornix/20151005_033929_zpsatsqly5f.jpg Enjoy. Luna707
I know how you feel man, I've been there. Depression can really consume your life. You don't have to apologize for that, I'm sure most of us on this site will understand. On a lighter note I love how you painted Horus' face, are there any pointers you can give on your process? Noctus Cornix
Thanks, Luna, that means a lot to me. :) As for Horus' face, I do it the same way I make usual Caucasian skin. Now, do note that I am still using older paints for this for the simple fact that I still have them around and I'm not exactly sure what their equivalent is with the current GW paints. I basecoat all of my models white as opposed to black. I do this because 1. I think the paint's colors come out better than with a black priming but also 2. because I am just way too bloody impatient to ever invest the time for any significant painting. It psychologically kills me to sit there for hours painting without making any major visual headway. Now, I start the skin with Dwarf flesh (don't know what it is now) and then follow it up with Elf Flesh (once again, don't know the equivalent) making sure to get the edging of the skin and leaving the recesses somewhat left alone. Then I just give it a splash of Nuln oil with a bit more care than armor platings and you're good. I've been forging through different ideas as of late to produce dark skin tones, particularly to use for my Word Bearers and World Eaters to show off proper Colchisian skin tones and that of the many varying colors and hues humanity's populace may have from those taken by the Legions during their conquest. I am usually pretty booked with school and work Monday through Wednesday and after that I just have work so I'm not entirely sure if I'll have the chance to give an update before Thursday. However, if I can't, I promise I'll have something to post on Thursday. You have my word as a Bearer of the Word. see what I did there? Noctus Cornix
Now... I promised I would have an update on Horus, didn't I? It isn't entirely done.
