Noctus Cornix's Commission and Paint Log(How far we've come)

Thanks, helterskelter! I know that most art and the fw model paint depicts him as having a grey or or even black pelt, but after reading Talon of Horus again, I thought I would pay homage to that and equally I thought it would stand out more against the armour. :)

Dude that stone work on Horus is amazing what's your technique just dry brushing?

Which one? The white of the Eagle or the tan of the steps? Both are supposed to be marble. I don't now if that came off well enough or noth.

Amazing work. But now I wonder if anybody has converted the 30k abbaddon for 40k...

I've seen it done before, though I'm personally not the biggest fan of the idea.

I am really liking these, but he lac of paint on the eyes is making them seem a little unfinished to me. Do you have a reason for doing them in that way?

Because of the simple fact that, if not done with pinpoint accuracy, it looks absolutely abysmal and I'd rather have no eyed primarch, which you can't even tell from a distance on the table, over a cross-eyed one. That's just my philosophy and I think it works.

Really?

I've seen a fair few complaints about the aging abbaddon the despoiler showing age and not holding up to newer kits... I'm surprised I haven't seen any conversions of the forge worlds model for 40k... Guess I could take a look.

Don't get me wrong. I think the old Abaddon model looks absolutely abysmal these days and seriously needs an update. That being said, I don't think his Horus Heresy model reflects him well at all in the 40k universe.

Alright, time for an update. I've had these pictures lying around for a while but I only just now really got the chance to post them up. Sons of Horus commission is done! Gotta admit, I'm really proud of how they look. The commission was from a friend to be a gift to a family member of theirs. Seems she really liked them and so did my friend. I'll consider that customer satisfied! Now, next up will be doing some work for personal projects. And then? Its on to my Alpha Legion commission. 20 tactical marines and 40 cataphractii terminators.... kill me. cry.gif

Now... On to pictures, yes?

Mh. The red on the Terminators could have done with a tad more depth as it looks rather flat. It could be the lighting though, so if it is, ignore my previous comment.

The marble on Horus' base looks superb though.

The red looks like you've painted on the basecoat and perhaps shaded it with a brown wash, but nothing more. No highlights, no variation in red, nothing. It makes the surface look flat and uninteresting. Having said that and after looking a bit more at the pictures, it seems to be something you do with most of your colours, so perhaps it's just your painting style. There's nothing wrong with that, mind you. And if your clients are happy and are asking for more of your work, then you're obviously doing things right.

You're not incorrect. I don't do highlighting or layering unless its necessary It's not a bad observation, and I will certainly admit there are some downsides to painting my models like that. However, highlighting is just sort of an artistic concept I never entirely found much interest in outside of very rare occasions on my models. It has purpose in a two dimensional piece upon a canvas but this is a three dimensional model that will adhere to the light of its surroundings without needing paint to do it for you. I will also say that, when done properly, (which I don't) highlighting can look absolutely gorgeous. Its just not for me. I try for a more realistic (if you can use that word) and muted coloring style.

I do appreciate the feedback, though, and I'll try to keep it in mind when I review my painting recipe next time.

It might still be a bit longer before I start things back up. That being said.... Have a little nibble, I suppose.

Here's one of my Dhar Aq'shyash, those who have been touched by the Abyssal Truth of Chaos and welcomed the river of half-formed within their broken and tortured bodies.

Bad-ass.

I'm wondering, though, what is Dhar Aq'shyash supposed to mean? I recognize fire, but Dhar goes over my head.

Dhar Aq'shyash is actually a title I've been sitting on for quite a while. Originally it was going to be the name of a daemon prince I had planned a long while back but eventually just scrapped the idea altogether but I kept the name on hand because I really liked it in concept. Now, in its most current form, it is the title used to describe their version of the Gal Vorbak, similar in base concept but the two entities are created in a very different method, this one unique to the Chapter of the Ruined King.

In the First Heretic, Cadians are described to use a more barbaric and crude form of Colchisian as their language which I can only assume is that of Dark Tongue also known as Black Speech, the unspeakable language of  madman's tongue and runes that ache the eye. Dark Tongue is not often discussed in more present lore but back in some of the older Chaos army books for Warhammer Fantasy had a page on some basics of Dark Tongue. I use these few pages as the basis for all my runes painted and monikers. So, for when I wish to give something a title for my Word Bearers, I use this as my basis because it techincally is the root of ancient Colchisian before its refinement and changes that is seen around the time of Lorgar.

Dhar means Black

Aqshyash  means Blood

Add a little flourish of Colchisian  which is something of a poet's language and in their dialect it would be "Those who drink of the formless water" While the simplistic and crude Dark Tongue means only 'Black Blood'
