Hillslam
I've wondered this. It often seems like my older minis tend to look less crisp than my newer painted ones. A little less detail on the sculpt, a little "melted". The paint edges, color delineations, all seem to soften up. Wondering if this really happens or is a figment of my imagination. I'm talking about figures that are a year or more old. I know my painting hasn't improved drastically in this time, nor have my paints or brushes or the sculpts. I also don't seal my minis (aside from a coat of hardcoat on the space marine gems and lenses and windows to give them a glassy gloss. Is this a thing? twopounder
Yes. Paint actually takes years to fully dry out and can change over time. This is why there are special paints and application processes that are used on high end products like cars. Though keep in mind that GW has changed it's paint formulas over the years as well. In general, they have become brighter (Dark Angels or "Caliban Green' for example is several shades lighter than it used to be). Grand Master Belial
And without some form of seal coat, the paint is still being exposed to light, finger oil, dust, etc... The pigments may be being bleached by light or are collecting materials in the tiny cracks in the paint that can enhance the softening. Hillslam
Ah. Makes sense. Not so worried about paint fade or color changes, but losing the crisp details sucks. Sad to think this thing you put so much time into will over time turn into a mushy blob. SW1
How are the models being stored? How much light/dust collect on them will have a major impact on them.
