Do you think this is stupid

Recommended Posts

I'm really torn on something and I can't decide as it seems mental and the cost on it seems ludicrous when you consider how much I'll actually be getting. I really feel like purchasing the Imperial Fists Helmets, Shoulders, bodies and a despoiler squad to create a command squad but just that costs over £70, but that's just it it's only a command squad, I have a banner bearer and the commander already but this command squad will be equipped with just chain sword and pistols and perhaps combat shields if I get them off ebay.

The one thing I'm absolutely certain on is I want to purchase Dorn in future, absolutely certain on that, so I figured I could construct a command squad for him, but the command squad will cost more than the actual Primarch. I just can't seem to drive the idea out of my head cause I think the models will look good but then I doubt whether I can paint them to the standard £70 to £80 should be painted, especially when for the same cost I can get something more impressive than 5 guys with chainswords.

Would it be acceptable to spread out the purchases? If £70 in one whack seems a little much, then smaller batches of gear may be better for you. Of course, it doesn't solve the issue of the squad costing you that much overall but unless you can luck out on Ebay, then the only other legitimate choice you have is using GW minis rather than FW.

If that will be the penultimate in command squads for you, then no I don't think it is too much.  The Heresy is definitely an expensive era of this hobby, but I'm a big proponent of doing it right.  If that means waiting a little longer and having the squad exactly the way you want them - then yes I'd say go for it.

That being said, I'm also a huge proponent of saving/budgeting and when I finally achieve a large purchase it makes me really cherish the hobby time I spend on those models even more.

I'd say the Templar Brethren upgrade, combined with a Despoiler kit would be a pretty viable alternative. The Templar kit includes MkIII shoulder pads, helmets and torsos, as well as a load of combat shields and power weapons.

If you do decide to go with your initial idea though, remember that you do get leftover bits for your money. Technically my Ultramarine Praetor would retail at £145(!) if I was to buy each kit that constitutes his parts, but obviously I have the remaining bits from each of the various kits which I'm using (topically) for my command squad and my Legion HQ.

Depends... you can spread the cost out depending on how you see it.  I thought the same with the DG stuff, I dislike the heads thankfully, can fully make use of the shoulders, and through having purchased lots of odd bits and finding a source of legs, has allowed me to make up more models to use up those spare parts.

I've purchased a lot of bits in the past... the one thing that remains constant is the following - no GW or FW options sell more legs than the number of marines that they intend to make (that I am aware of at least).  Meaning they make spare heads, arms, backpacks, weapon choices and torsos, but no spare legs.  Now, if you have the option to purchase the plastic GW older Mk legs from bits sellers, this becomes somewhat irrelevant and a major bonus.  You can also source other aftermarket options like Anvil and Spellcrow if you so chose to, depends on your group and how picky they are.

If you do choose to acquire legs, then you can limit yourself to not buying the despoiler squad.  Purchase the weapon packs, the IF packs (which include arms/heads/torsos), and the legs you choose from the bits sellers.  If you think they aren't blending well, then buy a squad from FW and mix things up or spread out the models across your (future) collection.

That's just one way :)

If it's what you want, and you can afford it without taking away from other, more important things, why not? 30k is extremely expensive and it's probably better to spend that bit extra on top of what you'd already be spending to make a unit/army that you're really proud of. If you're not comfortable spending the money, maybe look to something cheaper like Black Templar parts?

My humble opinion, is that this hobby is expensive as it is. No point avoiding that. But. The passion we all put it onto it, is not worth cutting corners. If you think a certain way is the way your head wants the army to progress, then you should do that and take longer to do it.

I know so maybe people, 30k, 40k and even Fantasy, cut corners with cheaper kits of not even bothering to make that unit and go for a cheaper in money and more expensive in points unit.

And they regret it.

So just balance it up mate. What's best for your hobby and best for your wallet.

Im in a pretty similar boat at the min, im doing a squad based on characters in a book so they all have pretty set armour/weapons/ accessories. Totalling it up with a despoiler squad, night lord upgrades various heads/torsos/weapons from ebay bits sellers the sqaud comes to like £100.... Ouch shouldnt have totalled it up hehe but its something ive wanted to do for a couple of years so well worth it in my eyes :)

So I took the plunge and ordered them, and they turned up today. I've started putting them together, I didn't want to do any chopping or anything but I have given them combat shields, one has a double bladed axe and another has a power fist, I was going to give a third a power maul but I'm not sure, if as I think having three guys with just chainswords and combat shields may be better as then I can have a cheaper command squad and if needs be switch them out with either the power axe or power fist guy.

I also made a commander like figure, utitilising the running legs, the drawing the blade bits from the Mk III commander and the imperial fist chest with the raptor on the front of it, if I have a figure like Sigismund, Polux or Dorn himself, he can count as a guy with a power sword I guess, not sure whether to give him a combat shield or not though.
