Frater Cornelius
I started 40k back in 5ed. Now I have arrived at a point where I have played every single 40k army to some degree. I had armies that I liked, some that I disliked. But now I am looking for something different. I am looking for a challenge. I challenge in list-building, a challenge in modelling and painting, a challenge in playing. Out of all places I have looked, only two armies ever intrigued me. Dark Eldar and Chaos Daemons. My issue with DE were that they are Elves (I do not mind Xenos so much, it is Elves that bother me) and that their play-style was always the same, it just required finesse pulling it off. Daemons in the other hand, I can not shake the feeling that I am only beginning to grasp the different tricks you can do with that book in conjunction with CSM and FW, even though I play some variant of Daemons every week or so with my friend's army. I generally dislike evil factions, but again, earlier fluff did paint Chaos as grey. So, an idea came to mind. Why not try represent the other side of the coin? Why not have Khorne represent martial honour and valour, Tzeentch hope and inventiveness, Nurgle rebirth and acceptance, Slaanesh passion and dedication. I feel that it would be a very interesting army to build and field. So, do you think Daemons (with some support) could give me the challenge I need? If so, any ideas where to begin? I do not want to go overboard with model-count and I am not a fan of hordes. I enjoy big models and elite stuff. Anything else is acceptable. Hope you guys can help me. Cheers ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304248-i-am-looking-for-a-challenge/ Share on other sites
Forté
Be worth having a look at Imperial Armour 13 too then if you like to play with the bigger stuff. Modelling wise it's easy to find a challenge with Chaos to push your skills. Frater Cornelius
Gameplay-wise, I enjoy using my head. Daemons are not the most challenging army to play when it comes to survival and movement (that one still goes to DE), but they have the most options within a single list, which makes it incredibly exciting to play. Here is what I have planned: Fateweaver Herald of Khorne - Juggernaut, Locus of Wrath, Lesser Reward, Greater Reward Herald of Khorne - Juggernaut, Locus of Wrath, Lesser Reward, Greater Reward Herald of Tzeentch - Disk, ML3, Exalted Reward Herald of Tzeentch - Disk, ML3 11 Horrors 11 Horrors 8 Screamers 10 Hounds 10 Hounds Skullcannon Skullcannon or Soulgrinder - MoN, Phlegm Bombardment Soulgrinder - MoN, Phlegm Bombardment (Soulgrinder option required me to drop Greater Rewards from Khorne Heralds and reduce Screamers down to 5) 1848pts I really like this setup. For one, Fatey. He can do awesome Warp Storm shenanigans with single re-roll and total re-roll. He can also help reserves, stop perils, pass psychic tests, enhance scream, re-roll power dice, re-roll Grimoire, the list goes on. The Hounds with Heralds are the offensive element to build pressure quickly. Skullcannon either deploy or deep strike. The Screamer Star will mainly be a factory, aiming for Scorched Earth in the first place. What I will be summoning depends on the match-up. Mainly Hounds when I need to be aggressive and Horrors when I need to play defensive. The rest depends on rolls. In the best case scenario I can replace a Herald or get juicy stuff like Flamers against cover save infantry. Horrors roll on Daemonology all the way, hoping to get 6. When the last Horror in alive, throw all dice at it and gain a free Bloodthrister. Overall, I feel this list can be flexibly. The question is, is it challenging to play or is it a snore-fest? :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304248-i-am-looking-for-a-challenge/#findComment-3968387 Share on other sites

gwarsh41
Daemons are easily the most diverse army when it comes to painting, and the strangest army when it comes to playing. The reward rolls and warp storm table can add a lot of craziness to your game. Some tips from a long time daemon player. Don't waste your fatey re-roll on warp storm, your warlord trait does it and you cannot re-roll a re-roll. Save it for a grounding test, or other unlucky roll. I have used it a few times when casting a Tzeentch spell that is D6+4 S. I rolled a 1, fatey re-roll, suddenly its a S9 ap2 shot in the rear of your vehicle! Fatey is a blast to use! Hounds are best in big units. They may have 2 wounds at T4, but that only goes so far with a ++5. If you ever get cursed earth with screamer herald, grimoire the hounds for shenanigans. I would consolidate into a single unit of +15 with 1 herald (always works great for me) Skull cannons are fun, but also a bit of a trap. Not that great. Same goes for phlegm soul grinders. You have 5 S10 attacks on the charge, don't hide and drop S8 blasts. Get up in the enemies face. Arguably the best soul grinder variant is Slaanesh with baleful torrent. Run the first turn for a 10-15" first turn unless bodies are in range for flamer/charge. Plus with this variant you don't snap shot your autocannon. Generally I like 2 slaanesh grinders and 1 nurgle grinder. Nurgle grinder hangs back and protects the pink horrors.
