Getting large area Airbrush effects from a colour spray can?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I am thinking ahead to my new project and was wondering if I could get a nice air brush like effect from Army Painter spray cans.

First I would spray a basecoat e.g. Dragon Red once dry I would Ink wash Red Tone over it all minus the center. Once dry apply masking tape on the edges of the sprayed area spray from a far distance for a light spray burst aimed at the center.

Ideas on if this will give me a better than by hand work without the need to get an air brush?

I've seen very effective zenithal highlighting done with a spray can, yeah. By center, do you mean from above? If so, I think that would work just fine. In fact, even folks with airbrushes still use rattle cans for some things, and this would be one of them. I've mostly seen it with black undercoat and then white from above to shade and highlight the undercoat, but I don't see why you can't do it with your army colors as well.

This is a good example of using a spray can to do some zenithal highlights. Just a straight up colour over a black undercoat but it's effective and if you used the same principle with lighter red over a darker red undercoat then that could work. I'd probably do the wash after the highlight though otherwise you might wipe out the effect with the 2nd spray.
