What makes an Army, that Army?

When you run a 'Grey Knight' army, what makes it GK?  When Grey Knights are doing well, are Grey Kngiht *armies* doing well, or individual units?

Going back to my first question.  What makes an Army?

GL, your Primary Detachment, doofus.  The one that contains your Warlord.

Really?

I can run 1,975 points worth of Grey Knights, with a 25 point Inquisitor as my Warlord.

What army is that now?  Grey Knights?  Inquisition?

The Inquisitor is the Warlord.

What happens if thorugh some chicanary I manage to run a Primary Detachment that cannot contain a warlord, with Grey Knights in Allied Detachments that also cannot contain a Warlord?

GL, well, your 'army' is the faction with the most points spent in it!

Is that correct?

How about a NSF, with a NDK as our Warlord, and a points total of 995.  Running with multiple Allied Detachments of a single faction that add up to 1005 points?

Even points aside, what about core strategy?  If lots of xenos/Imperial Guard are used as fodder.  Or transport providers.  But the main 'core' of the army comes forma different faction entierly?

What about an Army that uses Draigo with Space Marine Centurions?  And/or Lloth attached to our Paladin?  who's more important?  What's the 'core' of the army?

At the end of the day, is the notion of a specific 'army' even worthwhile any more?  Can it be distinguished?

Should we even bother trying to?

I would say a GK army is an army with GK at it's core, the units and rules the rest of the army conforms to. An BA+GK army based around Drop Podding 4 units of Purifiers on turn 1, yet does not focus on those Purifiers beyond Cleansing Flame, is at its core a BA army rather than a GK army. However, if the sole purpose of those BA is a delivery system to get the GK into play turn 1, followed by GK units and tactics pushing the pace of the game, then the exact same army is definitely a GK army at its core.

My opinion.

To me, it's a GK army if you feel it is. It's very subjective.

As far as I'm concerned, people can create "GK" armies using the generic SM codex if they want, as long as they paint it silver and try to be fluffy about the units in it.

What jeffersonian wrote is also a decent point. It's not the amount of GK. It's the role of them.
