irwit
Hi all In 1850 you'll only really have points for one LOW type so Im just wondering what people would go for if you had the option? Obviously Knights are really handy as they have good firepower and great close combat along with durable and mobile. Basically every box ticked! However the Macharius has 30 S6 ap3 shots a turn at 60 inch range!!! Thats just epic! Basically you will be removing a unit per turn unless you are either shooting at the wrong target or deployed badly. What does everyone think? Father Mehman
Do both. As I understand it, Knights can be added as a Detachment of 1-3 units. That saves your LoW spot for the Macharius. Everyone will hate you for it but it's legal (I'm pretty sure, at least). librisrouge
Oh, its legal If I'm forced to chose one, I'd have to go with the Knight. It adds a melee element that IG lack, so it contributes more to your army. Additionally, its two Leman Russ of firepower. Mull on that a moment. The problem with the Macharius Vulcan is that it won't eliminate a squad a turn because of cover saves. Consider this, 30 shots (assuming you didn't move) means 15 hits. Str 6 means 13 wounds (against T4.) +5 cover means 9 dead. While that may seem like a lot, and it is, it means you also have one survivor, doesn't take into account +2 saves or the fact that +5 cover is basically the minimum (I always assume +4), doesn't acknowledge FnP, doesn't consider T5+, and is still very expensive. Its a big part of the reason I'm not a gigantic Macharius fan. The tanks are too expensive for what they bring in my mind. Knight on my friend, Knight on. CoffeeGrunt
The Macharius chassis is overpriced....but will no-one mention how awesome it looks? Seriously, just beautiful. Sadly very static, and it suffers as a result because you'll want to maneuver around Cover to get clean shots, but don't want to move so you can fire 30 shots. lionofjudah
Yes... I'd say knight as I have the lovely Vulcan on my shelf... And there it stays as for the points it does not bring a ROI:(... WarriorFish
I agree that the Knight is more versatile and better value for points - both are awesome models though! irwit
Cheers for the comments guys. All good points. I guess a knight is looking like the definite favourite here. If I could get tigerius involved he could make that macharius quite deadly with rerolls and ignore cover, however you are now in the realms of 550 points and thats just too much and going away from guard a bit too much. Knight wise I guess twin battle cannon is way to go? CoffeeGrunt
I dunno, that Melta Cannon is an utter beast. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304322-macharius-vulcan-or-knight/#findComment-3970391 Share on other sites
Father Mehman
The battle cannon-toting Paladin is great for anti-infantry and also anti-armour. Also, you might even get lucky and kill something with a stubber ! The Knight Errant is good for anti-everything but it has a shorter range. It's great if you have enough covering fire so that it can charge in and kill anything opposing it. WarriorFish
Magnetise indeed, the best of both Worlds! :D As Guard we have battle cannons aplenty so I'm more for the melta cannon :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304322-macharius-vulcan-or-knight/#findComment-3970560 Share on other sites
Reyner
Personally I would go for the Macharius just because it looks awesome, easily one of my favourite 40k tanks. Idlem
Paladins are gravy. If you're in melta cannon range just charge the bugger and drop kick it instead. Battle cannons give you two shots with ordnance AP rolls anyway, much more useful IMO. Nothing quite beats a Knight leading your line, just looks so cool.
