Frostmourne
Morning Brothers and Sisters, I have come across a problem. I have my first game ever using the 30k rules this morning, and its the first game in the "friendly" local campaign.I have a secret mission, given to me by the Organiser, to kill Monstrous Creatures, Vehicles and Warlords with my HQ. Which MUST be a praetor (Yes thank you gents, i know how good a Forge Lord and whatever else would be, but it has to be a Praetor)So, in 1500 points, i have managed to squeeze him, with a Command Squad, in a Land Raider, with an Apothecary. This is my Praetor Delivery system. The rest of my list, is 2x 8 man Vet squads (Tight for points), Deredeo dreadnought, Contemptor Mortis with Kheres, Sicaran BT and whirlwind Scorpius. So quite a shooty list. My problem is that i am fundamentally screwing myself over. ESPECIALLY against all the Gauss i am going to play today, but thats by the by. My shooting array protects my CC EggsInBasket, but if that dies, the shooting cannot be maneuverable or survivable enough to win the game by itself. And against any army that can outshoot me, the CC isnt ENOUGH CC to do a thorough job. So basically, in your experiences, is it a case of Go hard or Go home with CC?At this point i am more than willing to forget my Secret mission, and ENJOY every game rather than watch it fail alot. helterskelter
Target priority my friend, now I assume your secret mission gets you bonus stuff, so what I suggest is play the fun narrative this mission provides. Throw everything at where you need your praetor to go, full blown escort service, and kill anything that is interested in killing your praetor. Then play the robocop theme as you roll across the field. Maybe not the last thing but you get the idea, having the scorpius, sicaran and eddy gives you a real good crowbar, 3+ saves are going to suffer heavily, plus number of shots these three combined can pump out. Think you can pull this off and still have fun so good luck! depthcharge12
Balls deep is the only way to go. Having played with Tau gun line for so long it got boring. I think assault is better than what people give it credit for. Have you thought instead of trying an Anvillus drop pod with your eggs in a basket instead? Drop in first turn where you need to, jink with the Anvillus, then haver it 6", disembark 6", then charge. That also gives you another 150 points to play with to get another Sicaran (without las sponsons), or buff your vet squads, or get some rapier batteries...etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304351-how-to-close-combat-against-the-grain/#findComment-3970773 Share on other sites
Frostmourne
I had not thought of that, but I ruddy will!! Also, post game, I lost, but he had one destroyer left with one wound, I had SO NEARLY tabled him, but he won on cards. My Praetor was absolutely incredible. He breasted in CC and killed the warlord and 3 characters. The Scorpius and the Contemptor were also insanely useful. Lysere
When going close combat you can't hesitate or hold back. Especially when you only really have one assault unit. Straight in, no brakes. Hit the enemy like a hammer and keep moving. Sounds like that is exactly what you did so shame you didn't quite win.
