Emperor's Furor
Is it ok to use Tamiya thinner in citadel paints so I can use them in an airbrush? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304366-tamiya-thinner-and-citadel-paints/ Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
It will work, but it's not necessarily the best choice. Tamiya X-20A is basically just isopropyl alcohol, and Citadel paints are water-based, not alcohol-based like Tamiya acrylics. It's a very expensive way to buy IPA too. You could get a gallon of 99.9% IPA delivered for the price of that little bottle. Emperor's Furor
Ah I didn't know that, I have a load of IPA as I use it for stripping, so is it best to mix IPA with the paint then and at what ratio 1 to 3? Lucien Eilam
so is it best to mix IPA with the paint then Like I said, it should work, but you're putting alcohol in water-based paint, and some combinations won't work. Try it out on your palette before putting it anywhere near your airbrush. Some Vallejo paints turn to jelly when mixed with alcohol, for example. You don't want anything like that clogging the nozzle. Vallejo airbrush thinner definitely works with every Citadel, (water-based) Vallejo, and ScaleColor paint I've tried. I can't vouch for IPA with anything but alcohol-based acrylics like Tamiya's range. and at what ratio 1 to 3? Aim for consistency rather than a particular ratio. The ratio can vary, depending on the paint, how dried up it is, etc. Typically you want a "milky" consistency, like the residue left after drinking a glass of milk that slowly flows back to the bottom. X-20A is not "just IPA", it's a mixture of n-Propyl and Butyl Alcohols with some other stuff thrown in. I have some Vallejo Colbalt Blue I want to use in my airbrush soon and was wondering whether I could use my tamiya thinner to water that down, or should I try get hold of some Vallejo thinner?
