Explorators/ship crew helmets, need some advice

Recommended Posts

Brothers,

I am building a massive project army with a slight spin, the battleground isn't on the ground, it will be in space. Think boarding actions, zero gravity, fighting on the decks and outer hull of a space ship kind of thing.

The guard unit attached to my Space Marine force are also to be modelled as such and I'm attempting to give them exploratory style helmets (a bit like goldfish bowls) but Im stuck for anywhere that I can get them.

Does anyone know where I can get something like that?

Thanks guys,

I like the pig iron heads but goldfish bowls are closer to what I'm looking for

I never thought of using test tubes, nice idea. I'll try to find some plastic ones or a way of cutting the glass ones.

Thanks again, any more suggestions and I'm all ears

I had exactly the same issue recently when I wanted to do a Rogue Trader and her retinue. I tried all sorts of things, but in the end I found this website, which does a range of plastic shapes including hemispheres. It's the only supplier I've found, but I suspect other places that produce stuff for architectural models might stock similar stuff. They're a bit thick for my liking, but do the trick with a bit of converting, as you can see below...

You can just get them on amazon for a few bucks.

Though if you just want something to slap some paint on you should definitely check out Crooked Dice. Apart from those heads they also have some other Retro Sci-Fi/James Bond inspired head you could probably use.

Some other stuff I could think of would be these or these, but they are not fully closed helmets.

Another company I don't know much about sells fully closed astronaut helmets for their 25mm range (Look under the accessory section for a picture of the helmets). I assume they should be about the right size.

They also have a section for 1/43 racing miniatures with a bunch of separate heads. Technically GW minis are 1/56, but since their heads are pretty large (heroic scale) you could try having a look at those maybe.

And because I remembered these conversions as you mentioned void suits/explorator teams I'm just gonna link them here as well for inspiration. They are just Cadians converted with Kroot armor. One of them had a shoulder pad glued to the helmet, which makes it look like a visor. Look pretty solid as well, so if all else fails, you have a proof of concept here for converting the plastic minis.

Go to your local craft store and buy some "googly eyes" for kids toys - cheap as chips - you can cut the back off them and remove the eyeball (I know this sounds gross but they're not real eyes.... tongue.png) and hey presto a clear hemisphere to make helmets out of.

NIce ideas, thanks a bunch guys, love that salvage crew too. I like the other suggestions too, though I'd prefer to have the helmets see-through.

"Hemispheres"... I knew there was a word for it but I couldn't put my finger on it. I'll probably head in the plastic test tube or EMA direction after I look into the googly eyes idea.

One idea that passed me which I'm not sure if they'll be big enough is using those tiny test tube things that you find with aftershave/perfume samples.

How about these helmets from Bombshell Miniatures?  I've been wanting to get a few of these and try them out on some other sci-fi minis…

Edit: upon further inspection on their website, they apparently have 3 different domes, including a 10mm size and two different 8mm sizes (one is a "tall" dome).

Those are pretty cool.

I wonder how well Buzz Lightyear's space suit color scheme transfers to Kasrkins.

Mars Attack game from Mantic has some Clear helmets but im not sure size wise if they will look right or fit.

The Bombshell Miniatures ones look good but I prefer Blue Moons its a shame you can purchase the bubble helmets from them separately.
