The challenge, provided by Blodvargarna:

"I challenge all my Wolf Brothers and Sisters to complete the deed.

Paint one model from start to finish before March 31. Then we have a poll to select the best painted model.

Those that participate gain honor, those that complete the challenge earn renown. The one that wins earns glory.

Rules: post one photo of an unpainted model, then post the finished model by March 31.

You may enter as many times a you wish BUT you cannot enter a new model until the first model is completed and painted.

Do you accept my challenge? "

This guy took 18 twin-linked rapid fired gauss shots before falling in battle, and for that he is the pack leader under Arjac.

I'll be painting him by the end of the month!!

End of Line

@ Argyle, I can't wait to see what you do with that awesome Murderfang

@RPR: That is one of my all time favourite heads from the SW sprue, and we need to hear this models saga....

@Amarog: I miss my old metal Njal wub.png

@BlodVagarna: There aint nothing humble about a death dealing, war scarred veteran of a Hunter, looking forward to see how he comes along..

Got the cloak almost done and messed up his face as I tried to get all the armour bits I missed...

Brothers!  My first attempt at the Grey Hunter ended in disaster.  I was very displeased with my result so he wound up "in the drink."  (Purple power to strip my ugly thick paint job).

I've tried to follow the GW tutorial, but I can't get the shading only the recesses part.  I think the nuln oil is too dark but I did not thin it very much.  I also had hard time cleaning up the excess shade.  I wound up getting frustrated and then used the Army painter Strong Tone all over.  That looked crap, so I tried to clean that up with ... more paint.  In the end I was clogging detail and the whole thing looked like crap.  So into the drink he went to rise again in a day or two clean and new ready for another go.  This challenge is going to be challenging for me.

Have you got a back up Hunter? I would suggest if you are trying stuff out to go with 2 or 3 so you can see what works and what doesn't then submit the model you ar happiest with to the challenge.

What colours are you using? Blue-grey or grey-grey

Instead of nuln oil, go with Agrax earthshade, gives a 'muddier' look, but is still dark enough to give you shade.

As for just recesses, sod that, I slather the stuff on as I will go back with my base colour which has been thinned down and put a layer over the top and use it as my mid tone. Then I highlight up. Keep your paints thin also.

Lastly, its an old tutorial from this great guy on dakkadakka called sigur, he also pops up on here occasionally. He uses old gw colours and vallejo, but it should be easy to colour match.

Hope this helps.

Sadly no update shots today. Its 4 am and ive been at work since 3pm. Get off at 7. 16 hour shifts suck heh. I got the converting finalized and some basecoating done so ill try and get that up before I come back to work tomorrow.

Looks like folk are coming along nicely!

Thanks Dantay. The Grey Hunter will emerge from his bath tonight and get reprimed. I also will take this opportunity to put on a new bolt gun because I managed to mess up drilling the barrel.

I am going for blue-grey. I think I was probably not patient enough between costs and maybe I need to thin more. I'm going to pick up some drying retarder / fluid medium. The paints seem to dry up fast on my pallet.

This time around ill do all the base coating of the fang and then give it a wash of agrax. Then I'll let it sit out overnight before I put the fenrisian grey on. There's another tutorial on YouTube (I have it book marked) and that's what he does.

It's been a while since painting models for me and Space Wolves are pretty challenging with all that great detail on the models. I hope to finish my own challenge!

I do have a back up GH that I primed last night that I'll work on as well.

I think with everything it's practice practice practice.

No worries, what about drybrushing, certainly a lot faster, and withall the texture, it can look pretty cool.

I'll put pictures in here shortly of the colour difference in using black and agax if I have it in my gallery.

Was a little experiment with Jimmy, the almost white wolf

If I am speed painting, like Jimmy, then drybrush, he is rank & file.

If I am doing my praetor or the FW stuff which I want to take time over, then I layer.

Forget the consistency of milk malarkey, for painting. You get different milks, so if I said skimmed (basically white water) you are going for a water, if i say full fat then it is quite a bit thicker.

Off the top of my head I go close to a 50:50 mix of water and paint, but I like mine thin, almost to the point that the paint splits. For every drop of paint I add, I add a drop of water.

Looks blimmin' stupid when you are painting a tiny spot, and have a huge pool of paint, keeping the paint consistently thin is key.

I have a long Fang here... If you want I can paint it up and do pics of each step if that helps. Let me know if you want layered or drybrushed.

My other bit of advice is sign up for a weeks free trial of miniwargaming and use their vault, they have gB's of stuff of which 1 is a Space Wolves painting tutorial.

I have signed up and I am a vault member and I have never ever regretted Kris' Quick tips for the win!!!
