BlodVargarna, here is the wee tutorial, for how I would do a Space Wolf in Blue grey

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/304588-painting-space-wolves-grey-the-taylor-way/

Hope folks like it, let me know what you think smile.png

It took 45 minutes to do the painting of the armour total including distractions and 3 flipping hours to put it together because the gallery didnt like the titles or somesuch

Got a little carried away with my Ulrik. Pictures posted on my thread

One question, would you think it wrong of me to paint him like my other wolves? I don't really want to do black armor, but could give it a try.

Thanks Dantay!

I used your tutorial to paint up my back up grey hunter. I'll post the results later. I'm pleased with his progress so far, but like any skill I need practice to get to the level most of the others here are posting up.

The original grey hunter came out of the drink and scrubbed up clean. I re-primed him with gesso but the white gesso left ugly brush strokes! So back into the drink he went! Hopefully third time's the charm. Maybe he is cursed?

(I've had great results with black gesso. White gesso on its own I've had bad results. So I tried mixing. A darker grey worked fine but wanted a lighter prime so made light grey primer but the mix had too much of the white and it did not work!)

Hi, I am glad you liked the tutorial.

I look forward to seeing the pictures of your grey hunter.

Yep with painting its all about the practice and just finding a style that suits you. The thing though is not to compare yourself to other painters. Use them as inspiration by all means, but never judge your works against theirs.Borrow techniques, ideas etc and push yourself. The absolute key is for you to be happy with what you can do for yourself.

My first models in 40K that I did would make your toes curl, they were that bad. Super thick nasty enamel paints... But at the time I was proud of them and I used them as a stepping stone to learning more about painting and modelling

Layering is good and you can get a nice colour shift with it, but depending how many coats you want to do it can be very time consuming. If you wnat to go fast and you do not have an airbrush, then dry brushing is a pretty good alternative. Messy but fast.

What is Gesso? And what GW paints do you have? If you have a grey and you are brushng your primer on, then dilute the grey 4 grey to 1 or 2 of water, just to get it to flow and then use that as your primer, or use ceramite white base and grey even mixed with a wee touch of water.

I can't resist. I recall mention of first painted models with thick enamel paint, and see this one that has sat in "unpainted shame." This could be my first, it has sat just as long in painted shame, but is a good reminder of humble beginnings. Of course, I had to flank him with more recent work to show the progress :)

I'm going to pick up some drying retarder / fluid medium. The paints seem to dry up fast on my pallet.

I would recommend a wet pallet, they keep the paint useable for ages, like weeks. And what's better you can make one out of stuff you probably have round the house, here is a thread...

I wish I had seen this earlier, I have just started a squad of GHs that would be perfect for this. Never mind.

Nah, that'd be fine.  They're supposed to be black, based on the fluff, but I've seen them done in the base colors in several players' armies.

My advice yoy ninja, is if te pics are saved in your B&C gallery, hit th my media button at the top of the reply screen,

Go to gallery images an choose the picture you want. The pictuer will then appear with your post and if folks want a better look, tewy can click oon it and see the bigger image directly in your gallery.

Hope that helps.

Guess I should post up a WIP, almost at the home stretch now :)

I am struggling with the skull, I am worried it is a bit... dark? What do you guys & girls think?

I am doing Lord Gunn, the Winter Wolf with a white pelt, which I have since mostly painted, its still a bit grey, but gives a big contrast to the skull.

Anyhoo, thoughts please?
