Mixing ancient roman Style and nordic tribal Style

Hi there!

Many Chapters have a stilistic Resemblance to Ancient Roman Armies (Ultramarines,) with using Crests, and Laurels. On The other hand, the Space Wolves have a nordic/tribal style, using lots of Pelts and Amulets. As even within the ancient roman Army, Wolfpelts were common for "Signifers" (the guy wearing a Wolfpelt on that Photograph. I hope that's the right word, I couldn't find a English translation), I wonder wether someone has (successfully) tried to mix it and wether there are some Pictures of Minis.

Thanks a lot in advance!

In 40k Wolf Pelts scream Space Wolves, any attempt ive seen (normally wolf cloak) just does not end up blending in.

I imagine using normal scale 28mm Roman wolf pelts might blend in better, but ive not personally come across any.

In my imagination, wolf pelts / cloaks might still work. But my imagination does weird things sometimes, so I try not to rely on it too much. ;)

I pretty sure that other space wolves decorations likes runes and celctic patterns certainly would'nt work.

Too sad … I'd really love it, if that would have worked. Maybe I'll give it a try with a few minis …

I had a few google searches and can't find anything of use. If you give it a try I would say your best bit is to trim down the wolf pelts as it would be very minor anyway, unlike the Space Wolves who love to flaunt fur.

I actually thought about adding some more tribal look-and-feel to the Crimson Fists. As I planned for a Space Wolves Army a few months ago, I do have a few Special Minis and looooots of Bits for Space Wolves Conversion from Third Party Vendors (couldn't stop shopping, hehe). But I generally like the Idea, that the "old" and "traditional" Chapters add some tribal Background to their "Culture". I always liked that Native American Indian Background of the Deathwing.

I'll keep thinking about it …

Thanks for our opinion and help!

Unsure how it could pertain to the topic at hand but, the White Scars seem to use pelts to a degree as well. Granted these aren't going to be as thick or as large as those of the Space Wolves due to climate differences where the Animals whose pelt in question originate from.

Yeah! They even do have personal Tribal-Marks on the Armour, which I do like aaaalot! But ... just like the Space Wolves, they hardly have any of the Roman/Greek Elements, like Crests and Laurels. :D

Weren't the Whaite Scars based rfom the Mongol armies?

They wer sometimes known as the Wolves of the Plains, I would have imagined thei tribal markings ould have been more mongol/ asian i origin, with the use of horse hair, rather than wolf tails for talismans.

White Scar Storm Seers, are pretty similar to Space Wolves Rune Priests i.e pretty shamanic.

If you want to see 30K Wolves with crests and the like I suggest you take a look at this guys thread.

Ah! That's almost exactly what I was looking for. He keeps the tribal and shamanic equipment to a minimum, but it's there and I think it works well. Great! Thanks a lot!

For something less obtrusive than the wolf pelt cloak, there are what look like wolf tails from Space Wolf kits that you can get from bitz sellers. There are also bolters and grenade/combat knife belt attachments with little charms on them. Some of the chaos marine bolters have little fangs hanging from them that might work if you shave off the arrows. Chaos sprues also have plenty of skulls that can be used for trophies.

I'd be interested to see how this turns out if you try it. I'm just starting a project right now where I want the marines to keep that standard pseudo roman look with little hints of their homeworld's culture showing through. Kind of Ultramarines gone slightly feral.

I expect to make a lot of mistakes trying to get the look right. unsure.png
