Rampart detachment and Steel Host help

Recommended Posts

So I'm thinking about expanding my Militarum Tempestus, but I don't really where to begin. I love the use of them as they are, BS4 Hotshot lasguns and the carapace armor are fantastic, but they're missing something vital. I need something to eat charges and protect my tempestus from close combat. What suggestions do you have?

I mentioned it in my Tempestus help thread, but I wanted to focus more specifically on these formations, because I'm pretty confident in how to play the MT's now.

The rampart detachment is 2 5 man squads of bullgryns, and a platoon command squad. I though it would be a good use of them to equip the grenade gauntlets and slabshields on all of them, that way I can spam small blast templates, and provide a wall of protection, forcing my opponent to deal with the Bullgryns, the Platoon command squad would be there to issue orders and provide supporting special weapons fire to the bullgryns. I would then use them to advance forward and my tempestus would end run around the enemy and hit them hard.

The steel host would provide covering fire from long range against troops and tanks. The hydra would add to my meager air defense (MT's can only take valkyries, so my firepower is somewhat limited, and taurox primes have at most S8, but they died so quickly in my first game). Having some armor to back me up would be nice.

Has anyone used these formations? And if so what did you think of them. Any theory is welcome too.

Unfortunately I don't have much to add to this, but I do think that the slabshield build is good for Bullgryns. Stand shoulder to shoulder for increased defence and the cover save can make a big difference. Add in the grenades and the fact they're tough Ogryns who can bash some heads in and you have a pretty neat package.

I love the Steel Host. Its Russ and more Russ, combined with a small tax of a single Hydra, in exchange for a Preferred Enemy bubble. That really helps out certain Russ (Executioners especially) and lets you add armor to other forces more easily.

I want to do two squadrons  of 2 Battletanks and a Vanquisher, and one of 3 punishers, and the Tank Commander in a battletank with 2 more battletanks. I know that's a ton of points, but I'd like to have a list of nothing but armor, because it would be fun.

The Rampart detachment is pretty static in terms of what you can do for options, I think it has to be the grenade gauntlet/slabshield combo, which suits me fine. The PCS is where you get the flexibility, I don't know how I'd equip them yet, but I was thinking of adding some AP2 with them, to help with 2+ armor saves.

I'm wondering though, if you think my space wolves could do the role of the rampart for cheaper? I'll ask the SW forum for help, but let me know what you think.

Where are these formations mentioned?

Sanctus Reach: Red Waaaghh!

Strongly consider some Executioners for a Steel Host. Preferred Enemy puts that safeties back on these bad boys. Also, if you're going with a Vanquisher, make the Tank Commander the Vanquisher. The improved BS (combined with PE) means that he'll rarely miss and that will matter a lot.

In the rampart detachment, you don't need to stick with the gauntlet/slabshield combo, you can still throw in a maul or three. You aren't forced one way or the other and the maul is kinda good on the Bone 'ead. Consider putting the PCS in a Chimera. Behind the Ogryn, it will have a +3 saving throw that will help to keep it alive and issuing orders. It will also keep your special weapons safe. Think about four meltaguns. BS3 hurts but four shots helps.
