Constructing and Painting Knights?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering whether anyone had advice and tips on painting knights. I'm planning on using an airbrush for it and was thinking of leaving the armoured panels off leaving the underneath to be painted separately as that will mostly be in a metallic cover, whilst for the armoured plates I want to do a House Taranis style colour where they are half red half white. Is this doable or should I just stick it altogether and work around them?

For better handling i prefer to keep arms, legs, torso and armour plates seperate. Here´re some pics of my Taranis Castigator.

This was my forth knight. I did all the same way. Actual i´m working on my fifth one.

Yeah, leave the armour panels off. That way you get a greater coverage of metallic paint on the "skeleton" of the Knight. If you're planning on doing a GW Knight, you can glue the arms to the torso and then glue that assembly to the legs with no problem. Just make sure you've left the carapace armour off the torso. Some people leave everything in subassemblies and then super glue it afterwards. Whatever floats your boat smile.png!

Dark Bjoern is doing a much taller FW Cerastus Knight which should be done in the assemblies he has there. So much easier to paint that way.

I was wondering if I could get some help. I'm thinking of painting my knight blue, but I'm not sure the best way to go about it. Do I spray everything white, including the main body and the panels then airbrush the undercarriage with leadbelcher (don't have the spray) and the panels airbrushed altdorf blue? or would it better to use GW macragge blue spray over the white undercoat.

I can't be sure but I think I put the head on to "low" it still tilts and everything but when I slide the bits on and compare it to the example images the head seems to be to low on the pivot shaft. Only problem is I've used plastic glue and the head is firmly put together around the pivot, and it may be to dangerous to cut it in half now :/

What you can put through your AB can depend a lot on the model. I've got a Master series with a really fine needle that balks even at airbrush ready paint, and I have a Badger with a .45 needle that you could spray maple syrup through.

Mixing any model paint with vallejo medium will usually work, but the more medium you use the longer it will take to dry, the more coats you need, etc. The one thing you absolutely have to make sure is there's no chunks in your paint.

I basecoated my knight before I assembled him, and I've been kicking myself that I didnt leave all the plates off for the later coats too. You can mask everything off and do it anyway but it's a loooot of work, and overspray can hit the rest of your piece from a surprising distance if you dont have it all masked properly.

Here's how my knight looks, I did everything separately, think I need to do a bit more, like highlighting and I need to decide what to put on the shield and whether to put any more decals elsewhere.
