Kurov's Aquilla

Recommended Posts

I took this relic in the last tier of the escalation league I am participating in. For 60 points it's pricey. I modelled it using some parts out of the bits box. I was wondering if anyone else has modelled it or has used it and if it is something viable to use every game.

It game all my plasma guns such a buff I think I may use it all the time. I didn't loose a single one to my own rolls. I was impressed but I can buy another squad of guard for that price. What do you all think of the other relics and which ones are worth it.

Nah, all that stuff is too expensive, or it's useless...l would pass on all of it.  The only good company command squad build I've found is three plasma guns...maybe a medic...and any regimental advisors that you feel are appropriate to your build.  But I usually just take Pask...

This comes up from time to time.

Full math found here.

The short versions is, if Kurov's Aquila can make 166 points worth of models gain PE, it will cause more damage than adding 60 points of models to that unit.

Most of the other heirlooms I don't like because they have a downside that is not reflected in a lower point cost.  The emperor's benediction is ok if you have a spare 5 points left over.  The blade of conquest is an insult at 25 points.  However, the death mask is a good buy considering what most codices have to pay for their 4+ invulnerable save.  For 5 more you get a couple extra special rules.

Thank you, sir. My thoughts were right worth the points

Oh heck yeah.  Especially when you are facing lists made of multiple codices.  Old Grudges is too limited to count on when you can have preferred enemy (everyone) on multiple units plus still getting another warlord trait.

I used to not think much of the Aquilla, but then I decided to run two Special Weapons teams of the plasma varity as kind of a bodyguard unit for my CCS since my brother likes to fly his demon prince in to say hi. I used to never, ever run plasma cause my dice rolls always seemed to crop up as a 1. However, this last game running my SWTs for the first time, along with the Aquila well, it suddenly was all...

One round of firing from my SWTs plasma, with a couple of saved rerolls due to my Aquila and suddenly that demon prince was plasma goop. I got to use much more aggressive tactics with the aqulia backing up my rolls. I'm also suddenly more interested in Special Weapons teams. It just seems worth it in every way provided you can keep your CCS safe.

The death mask is good for the points in a vacuum...but when you consider that the wearer often has a 5++ default, you're not paying for a 4++, you're paying to upgrade from a 5++ to a 4++...which used to cost termies five points (now they upgrade to a 3++ for the same five points!).  Add to that the idea that the "other armies" you're comparing guard to in terms of paying for a 4++ are generally taking that 4++ (they're usually paying the points to go from no invul to a 4++!) are generally putting that 4++ on something far killier, be it in shooting, melee, or both, than any guard HQ...the death mask is really a craptastic deal when you put it in context.  Sure, it's five points more than a rosarius...so?  If you could give the death mask to a character that has access to a rosarius, that would be a relevant point.  But the death mask is really only available to puny humans who generally already have a 5++, while the rosarius/shield generator, etc, goes to a BS5 crisis suit, a canoness, etc...in other words, a model with far more offensive potential and no base invul.  No comparison, the death mask is vastly overcosted!

I run the Company Commander in a Chimera behind two Punishers. With twenty shots each, there's bound to be some misses. Being able to pick up an extra few hits per shot has helped quite a bit. Can you imagine what you could accomplish, or avoid, when using it with a nearby Executioner armed with plasma cannons?!

The idea of running two SWaT teams with plasma is a great idea too. I've had nothing but good things with the Aquila. I know it's pricey, but I can get a lot more done with a few re-rolls of Punisher cannons than an extra ten guards with lasguns.
