Raptors (Audio Drama Spoilers)

Recommended Posts

So just finished listening to this and thought I might provide some brief spoilers on it.

The Raptors lead by Navar Hef come upon a Space Wolves ship left adrift, they board it and find some dead Space Wolves whose faces have been mutilated. They trace the origin of the ship back to a moon, where they find a small force of Sons of Horus besieging an outpost, their ship being held off by some orbital defence lasers. They contact whose inside it and find its Space Wolves, who tell them to get lost, until Hef tells them they are Raven Guard. The Space Wolves invite them in, but the broadcast wasn't safe and the Sons of Horus bare down on the Raven Guard, the Space Wolves save them and they come face to face in the small keep.

Hef removes his helm forgetting what he looks like and theres a brief stand off. They both lower their weapons eventually as the Space Wolves themselves show them they too are affected by a geneseed problem as they remove their helmets and reveal long fangs and canine like snouts. The pack leader explains they were sent to watch over Corax but couldn't find him for 5 years and they set the ship adrift with the hopes the RG would find it, the dead bodies were of wolves who had fallen to the wulfen and were forced to be put down. The Space Wolves plan to blow themselves up with the Sons of Horus, but Hef eventually persuades them to let the RG deal with the SoH by using their ship to take out the enemy ship and provide cover fire for the RG who leave first, they do so and the SWs blow the keep after escaping it.

However Navar Hef questions whether he made the right decision and should of just let them die because he got the feeling the Space Wolves would report what had happened to the Raven Guard and it would cause some major problems. The Space Wolves eventually make it to the small gunship Navar's Raptor arrived in and Navar welcomes them, he has though made up his mind and decides to kill the small band of Space Wolves, he ends up dueling the pack leader and kills him with his claws after the pack leader shatters his chainsword with what I believe to be a frost axe. Navar tells his raptors to not breathe a word of this to the legion or anyone else and that the space wolves died with the self destruction.

Wow. I was really tempted by this but I'll pass for now and wait if they ever have a sale :P The Raptors have always interested me (since they were mentioned as the Weregeld in the ancient IA).

On the whole killing of the watch pack it is very understandable since most Raptors are hideous mutants who look like they fell out of the arse end of the Eye of Terror. At this stage very few people outside the Legion and possibly some of the Therion Cohort know about the Raptors.

...wha? I'm not knowledgeable in RG fluff but are they always asses? they killed battle brothers because of an assumption? Sounded good up to that point

Edit: Had a duh moment and forgot to put in spoiler tags. Sorry all

No, they are quite nice normally, however in this circumstance Navar took it upon himself to make the decision, it was very very likely the Space Wolves would report what they'd found to Russ. I don't think this was handled very well tbh, it wasn't really necessary, in the previous fluff it mentioned the Space Wolves seeing what had occured but kept it to themselves due to their own infliction, this seemed like a 180 on that. The Space Wolves didn't really ingratiate themselves with the Raptors though either, they got a couple of them killed due to their unsafe vox communications and the pack leader acted like a bit of a dick. Navar made reference to the hypocrisy of the space wolves in his thoughts as well, i.e they are quick to judge others but fail to hold themselves to the same level of judgement.

The spoilers I gave before were only brief, there's plenty of minute details that contribute to the eventual decision, the overall story though was much like Navar convincing the Space Wolves to not sacrifice themselves, irrelevant.

Yeah I was reading what you posted and thought this is going to be an updated version of the great piece of background where the space wolves see the wiergild and look the other way due to the wulfen. The space wolves and the Raven Guard are supposed to be quite friendly to aren't they?

I think that people are missing some of the finer points to this story.  The overall story might seem a bit irrelevant but what about....

The fane on board the abandoned Space Wolf ship?

Maybe the two dead , mutilated space wolves in the brig were more then just out of control brothers?

The two missing Space Wolves who did not make the rendezvous?

You're forgetting that the HH series seems to have a major beef with the Wolves in general these days. I don't know if it's an overreaction to the hatedom that PB spawned, but the VI don't seem to get any good portrayals at this point, just turning up to be made to look stupid and then get killed to a man (which seems to be the norm for these Watch Packs).

More on topic, this is censored.gif. At this point I'm doubting the Wolves are ever going to get any good portrayals or pleasant interaction with the other Legions. Thus far they've scuppered the good relationship between the Khan and Russ and now this. Taking the one Legion that didn't give a damn about the RG's mutation problem previously and having them murdered to keep the secret. Poor form guys.

Well hopefully ADB or Abnett writes The Best Story Ever of the Dark Angels and Wolves making up their differences on their quest to get back to Terra to end the siege.

I really hope they write that story and both legions get a lot of love - it's kind of deserved at this point.
