Help with a Night Lords l850 list

Hi all,

new here and new to "actual gaming" although i started messing around with 40k back in the days of rouge trader and then again in the early 2000s.

I want to start a Night Lords army and have been doing a bit of research but im a little peturbed and confused as to a correct and viable list generation and composition and was hoping for some good solid guidance as it seems this is the place to ask!

I guess mainly i would be facing 40k opponents and i think the majority play space marines at the local GW, but i know i will be facing eldar and tyranids regulary also.... so i guess an all comers list is what im after.

so here goes....

HQ:
• Praetor - Jump Pack, Iron Halo, Paragon Blade, Trophies of Judgement, Melta Bombs
- Rite of War: Terror Assault
180 pts

• Command Squad (3) - 3x Jump Pack, 3x Power Weapons (axes i think)
175 pts

Elites:
• Contemptor Mortis - 2x Twin-Linked Lascannons & Havoc Launcher
200 pts

Troops:
• Terror Squad (8) - Headsman w/Artificer Armor, Nostraman Chainglaive & Meltabombs, 3x Volkite Chargers, 5x Bolters, Drop Pod
255 pts

• Terror Squad (8) - Headsman w/Artificer Armor, Nostraman Chainglaive & Meltabombs, 3x Volkite Chargers, 5x Bolters,  Drop Pod
255 pts

• Terror Squad (8) - Headsman w/Artificer Armor, Nostraman Chainglaive & Meltabombs, 3x Volkite Chargers, 5x Bolters, Drop Pod
255 pts

Fast Attack:
• Night Raptor Squad (5) - Huntmaster w/Artificer Armor, Nostraman Chainglaive & Meltabombs
175 pts

Heavy Support:
• Sicaran - Lascannon Sponsons, Armored Ceramite, Auxiliary Drive, Dozer Blades
210 pts

Total: 1705 pts

I have a few spare points and ultimately i wanted to run 2 Chaplains in 2 of the Terror Squads ( adjusting a few things here and there to make it 1850 pts on the nose) but after reading the rules again i realised i can only have 1 consul. Is there a way to run an extra consul like unbound in 40k and still use the Terror Assault Rite of War ? Also .... should i have one Chaplain or a Moritat or something else all together to achieve what im looking for ??

Thanks to all in advance !

Hi there, Cycloperous! You're in a similar position I was in not too long ago, but which the help from wiser fraters than myself and a little play-testing, I identified what needed to be done to get my list squared away and fun to play.

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305129-pre-heresy-night-lords-list-3k-terror-assault/

That's the link to my thread in here asking a lot of the same questions you did. I think you'll find a lot of wisdom in the replies I received.

Here's the quick feedback I can give you myself:

1) Unfortunately 30K doesn't allow the unbound FOC like 40K. While there are a few alternate FOC available, those are (as far as I've seen) specific to particular campaign scenarios, which means in general they're not permitted. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news there.

2) As you'll see in my thread, I had a lot of questions regarding Consuls and how best to use the lone support HQ slot. I think you're on the right track going with a Chaplain (I did too), and from what I've seen you're going to want him packing something that hits hard, like a Power Fist or a Thunder Hammer. A boarding shield would not go awry either to protect him from shooting and close combat. Which brings me to my next point...

3) Strength & Survivability. Terror squads are very killy, but they're not especially tough. The fact that you can only get ten-man squads in a drop pod to make use of the Rite of War makes this even more problematic. If counting your Headsman you have a nine-man squad, you've got the ideal squad size (IMO), now just throw an apothecary with artificer armor in with each Terror squad to fill out the drop pod. You've just done wonders for keeping your guys upright and in the fight. You will also have trouble with just five Night Raptors, so if you have the points bump up their numbers and it Also, I'd highly recommend investing in at least one or two power fists. Your command squad in particular would benefit from having at least one to back your Praetor up should you come up against something big and nasty. Melta bombs are great, but it's never a bad thing to have a back-up plan should that guy go down. I run my Thunder Hammer-wielding Chaplain with my Night Raptors, and have had great success so far as he gives them some potency against armor and high toughness that they otherwise would lack.

4) I would swap out the Sicaran for a Deredeo Dreadnought or a Fire Raptor Gunship. The Sicaran is awesome, and in an army with more than one HS slot I would always take one if possible, but you have no anti-air besides the Contemptor Mortis and that is a problem. The Deredeo is like a super Contemptor Mortis, and if you protect it the Deredeo has enough firepower to single-handedly clear anything in the air and most things on the ground.

I hope that helps! Good luck and welcome!
