spu00sed
My Emperor's Children have lain half painted for over 18 months. About 1/3 of the units were fully painted. Yet with no gaming the painting slows to a stop. However the 30k casual hobby challenge has changed all of that. Last month I painted my knight which has been without paint for just as long, and this month I have pledged to paint the 15 undercoated models in my force( and I have placed a large FW order of models to make). However I have also finished painting my mostly painted models and units and can now proudly show them to you, a pheonix risen from the ashes. Just like the legion itself. So I present to you my expedition force Tactical squad http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b337/Sdimbylow/Pre%20heresy%20Emperors%20Children/tactical%201_zpsezjsb60o.png Tactical squad http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b337/Sdimbylow/Pre%20heresy%20Emperors%20Children/tactical%202_zpscxaozgal.png They have spent too much time on assignment with their cousins in the world eaters and have picked up some bad habits. I know that my praetor has a cross crest and other HQs have front to back crests, as well as some of the sergeants. But I can't remember If ranking sergeants should have the crests, or if I was part way through adding them to all sergeants. My bits box says it is the latter. spu00sed
Thanks guys. Kizzdougs, I'm planning on adding another contemptor or two, a spartan and a scorpius and possible a Madusa. Though my latest order has been more marines, to bling up my praetor, and to make a command squad, delagatus and some palatine blades. spu00sed
For those who like reading. The military organisation of my expedition. Though I have used Roman names for the most part. The design Is that of the British army, during the empire. Officers form the higher classes leading the Warriors form the lower classes. I got the idea from the FW description of them recruiting from the sons of defeated nobels and thought of having an expedition that continued this practice, but found demand outstripped supply. So recruited form the lower classes, but couldn't stand the idea of commoners being in command. So without further ado cohort formation. Cohort formation The cohort is made up from 6 centuriaes. A standard cohort composition consists of 3 line centuriaes, 1 vanguard centuriae, 1 armour centuriae and the primus centuriae. Line centuriae The basic structure of the line centuriae is the contuberii. A group of 5 astartes that share the same contuberium, or sleeping area. These astartes work and fight together constantly, to better learn and predict each other to make them a more formidable fighting force. Each contuberii is lead by the most senior member, who is given the rank of prefector. It is the prefectors responsibility to ensure that the contuberii is ready for duty and commands them for patrols and guard duty. Groups of 4 contuberii are gathered around a central arming chambers, which in turn are situated around the cohorts training area, called the martium. These arming chambers are the bases of the squads of the centuriae. The first two are for members of the tactical squads, the third for assault squad members the fourth is shared by support and heavy weapon marines. The fifth and sixth arming chamber are normally left empty, used by vanguard and primus centuriae squads attached to the battalion. The junior officers of the centuriae are billeted separately to their men, this serves two purposes. Firstly to ensure no improper relationship between officers and rank and file astartes and secondly to allow the officers to learn to work together and a cohesive whole. Whilst the junior officers share a arming chamber, they each have their own sleeping chamber. Each cohort has 8 junior officers, though there are 12 sleeping chambers attached to the arming chamber, these spare spaces are for the junior officers of attached auxillia sections. Each officer is attended upon by his adjutant, whose job is to carry the officers vexilla into battle for him. The adjutants share 4 contuberiums and are officers in training. Each junior officer leads two contuberii, though in practice the tactical and assault contuberii are formed into four contuberii strong formations, rather than ten strong formations. Each of these have two officers leading them, as first and second sergeants. This leads to a complex structure of rank within the junior officers, with the most senior junior officers of the tactical and assault squads out ranking the others and the second officer of these squads technically being on par with the offices of the support and heavy weapon squads, though this pecking order is further complicated by recently won honours and prestige handed down from battalion and cohort command. The centuriae command elements arming chamber is situated beyond the junior officers area. This arming area consists of two contuberii of veterans, hand picked by the centurion himself. There are also 6 personal sleeping chambers, these are for the centurion, his chosen second, the cohort champion and apothecary. The last two are spare for any other senior officer who have been assigned to the battalion. This gives a line centuriae a nominal strength of 110 marines Vanguard centuriae The vanguard centuriae consists of the cohorts fast recon and scout section. Though billeted in a similar manner to the line centuriae, the Martium is often half empty as sections are assigned other centuriae and train alongside them to ensure optimal fighting efficiency. The vanguard centuriae consist of 4 contuberii of recon marines, another 4 of seeker marines, 6 contuberii of jet bike riders and 4 contuberii of land speeder crew. centuriae command is identical to that of the line centuriae, however due to the fragmented nature of the centuriae it contains 10 junior officers. This gives the vanguard centuriae a standard strength of 124 marines. Armour centuriae The armour centuriae doesn't measure its numbers in terms of its marines, instead it measures its size in terms of the number of armour vehicles it commands. A standard compliment being 20 predator tanks 10 Sicaran battle tanks 5 scorpius artillery tanks And 2 glaive super heavy tanks The armour centuriae doesn't contain any siege tanks or mobile artillery pieces as these are part of dedicated siege centuriae. The armour centuriae's main mission being to provide mobile heavy fire support to the other cohorts. The centuriae is also responsible for the maintenance and piloting of the battalions rhino (30 machines) and land raider troop transports (12 of assorted variants) Primus centuriae The primus centuriae consists of 12 contuberii of veterans all of whom are trained in the use of tactical Dreadnaught armour. It is their duty to be living icons of the perfection of the IIIrd. It's command section consists of 6 juniors officers, and their adjutants, as well as the centurion and his senior command elements The primus centuriae has a standard supplement of 98 marines. Cohort command The cohort command officers include the praetor, his honour guard, the cohort champion. 2 contuberii of Phoenix guard, seconded from legion command, 3 contuberii of palatine blades. In addition cohort command contains the following elements Apothacrium Though each centuriae has its own apothecary, the cohort level is where long term recovery and complex surgery takes place. The third legion was once almost wiped out by disasters and the cohort that care to ensure that they stock pile reserve gene seed. It is run by the primus medicae who is supported by 6 apothecaries (in addition to the 6 attached to the cohorts) and 48 mortal orderlies. It is also the primus medicae's role (alongside the chaplaincy) to check potential aspirations for viability for gene seed implantation. forge The forge is where the cohort equipment is maintained and repaired. It is commanded by the forge Lord who has 17 tech marines and 129 servitors at his immediate command. The forge also houses a variety of additional armoured and self propelled wepoans, from rapier support weapons, to vindicator siege tanks. Hall of the ancients The hall of ancients are the cryo-stasis vaults where the ancients that pilot the cohort's dreadnaughts are interred between battle. The vaults have the capacity to hold 12 pilots, though in most cohorts no more that 5 or 6 are present, module to the difficult and complex task of building the Dreadnaught hulls. probatii company Those line marines that infract the rules may find themselves allocated to the probatii company as penance for their crimes. There they will be lead into battle by the centurion-moritat, wearing the black of the destoryer, until the time for their punishment is fulfilled. The numbers in the probatii company vary, but very rarely exceed more than a dozen in number. Siege train Most cohorts will have, at command level, a small number of siege artillery pieces available at command level. This section isn't considered a centuriae due to its limited size. The siege section is lead by a centurion and will consist of a dozen siege guns (a mixture of Medusa and earth shakers) and 6 contuberii of marines who act as crew and gun guards. Chaplaincy The chaplaincy consists of 7 chaplains. Whose roles are to see to the moral health of the marines in the cohort as we as to maintain the hall of the ancients and help with medicae in choosing aspirants to be send for astartes training. Chaplains are often attached to the various centuriae commands, however they are rotated to different cohorts on a regular basis, so not to grow personal bonds with the marines they oversee. Other centuriae Siege centuriae Siege centuriae are large centuriae that completely utilise the martium around which the contuberii are built. This gives the centuriae a strength of 158 marines, though this fighting strength rarely lasts as it is the centuriae role to tear down enemy fortifications and lead the charge through the breach. Due to the high level of expected casualties, siege centuriae are often assigned additional apothecaries. Most siege centuriae have 6 conuberii assigned as gun crews, this gives six batteries of three guns. The remaining 122 marines are assigned to breacher squads. Heavy line infantry centuriae Heavy line infantry centuriaes are very similar to standard line infantry cohorts, however they forgo the assault squad in favour,of more tactical marines and heavy and support weapon squads. A standard heavy infantry cohort will consist of 12 conuberii of tactical marines, 6 of support Mariners and 6 of heavy weapon marines. The heavy infantry centuriae has fallen out of favour in recent years due to its lack of flexibility compared to the line infantry centuriae, which smaller size allows for the embedding of additional units for cross squad training and a more flexible approach to compliance. Equitian centuriae Equitian centuriaes are fully mounted cohorts, utilising bikes, attack bikes, jetbikes and land speeders. Though they have similar equipment to vanguard centuriaes their mission objectives are different. Vanguard centuriaes are the scouts of the battalion, whereas equitian centuriaes are given free reign to search and destroy enemy units and harass broke and fleeing troops Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305535-spus-iiird-legion-risen-from-the-ashes/#findComment-3997669 Share on other sites
spu00sed
Thanks for the compliment Mr mortis. When painting the recent batch of marines I found something out. My original recipe had the purple given a gloss varnish before the Matt coat, hoping for a, hopefully, satin finish. Turns out the gloss coat is hidden total by the matt, so is totally redundant.
