General household item to strip painted minis?

Recommended Posts

Subject says it all. I have two plastic miniatures that I need to strip the paint off of. They were painted with the standard Citadel/GW paints. I'm looking to do this on the cheap without having to go to Wal Mart to buy some solution. Anything household that will work?

Thanks.

I don't recommend brake fluid because it's very caustic and can damage your minis as well as cause burns.  You want goggles and rubber gloves with that stuff (and old clothes).  Simple Green will do just fine, or if you can't get that, 90% isopropyl alcohol will do as well for removing acrylics.

Dunk them overnight or for 24 hours, and scrub them with an old toothbrush.  Scrape away what remains with a hobby knife if possible and dunk them again if needed.

Some people use an ultrasonic cleaner (like the sort for cleaning jewelry), these are inexpensive and work fine with Simple Green or isopropyl.

Purple Power degreaser I bought at Autozone. Best results for me after using Simple Green and non acetone nail polish remover. Purple Power was more effective than Simple Green and did not affect plastic even on minis left in for weeks.

But you will have to scrub with an old tooth brush no matter what.

Isopropyl alcohol is by far the best i have found.

Works on resin, plastic and metal with no detrimental side effects to model materials or glue. Soak if for a little while(20minutes minimum), apply toothbrush (dip in the IPA on occasion), wash thoroughly, dry = one model good to go. On the other hand, should you happen to forget about said model, no harm done. I left a techmarine in a jar of the stuff for a fortnight by accident with no ill effects.

Can be purchased cheaply on ebay and/or is readily available from pc component shops (I got mine at Maplin).

Hope it helps! smile.png

I also use 91% iso, I bought a lot of bits online that happened to be painted and it works great. I put it in a prescription bottle(empty obviously) and put the cap on, and I just let it sit overnight. old toothbrush and usually will come out perfect with nothing else needed.

However...I am trying to strip a rhino that was painted blue on the sprue...and alcohol, simple green, dawn/palmolive have not worked.... it may be an enamel...joy.

This is what I use, and it works exceptionally well. Bought it at Walmart for a couple bucks (found in the automotive section). Have used it on resins and plastics with no issues, even after forgetting models and leaving them in the soak for weeks at a time.
