Kaldoth
So, I've got a local tournament coming up in about two months and I've thrown together a Death Guard Army List for it. My issue here is anti air choices with the Chaos dex. I've been out of the hobby for a while (3.5 Ed), but as far as I can tell we have very little anti air capability. I'm wondering what choices most people are taking? At my local store I see a lot of skimmers, flyers, and marine armies out the yang. From the dex, the two choices I can see for anti air are Heldrakes and Havocs with Flak missiles. With the list I've thrown together, I absolutely need that Heldrake for some anti infantry via the Baleflamer. I took a five man strong squad of havocs with two lascannons and two missile launchers and an ADL with a quad gun. Not cheap. I would guess that two missile launchers with Flak missiles combined with the quad gun would be more than enough to down a flyer, while the lascannons offer enough anti tank punch when the flyers are mopped up. However, I'm left wondering if its worth the points? So, what do you all usually take? Is there something better? Help a returning player out! Cheers, -Kal Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305546-chaos-anti-air/ Share on other sites
Teetengee
Don't buy flak missiles. Just drop them and buy more cultists. Focus on the ground and use the quad gun/vector striking heldrake for dealing with aircraft. Remember, anything the heldrake vector strikes it can't shoot anymore anyways, so it isn't like you are really losing functionality if you orient properly. GreyCrow
Like Teetengee said, Flakk Missiles aren't really worth it. S7 AP4 guns need a very high number of shots to do something and 4 in the Havocs won't do much. Their use is very limited to shooting down light fliers with AV10 or 11 but they'll be lacking against anything else. I used to run a Stormtalon with Skyhammer ML (3 S7 AP4 shots) and it was virtually useless against any heavy fliers or FMC, like Stormravens or Flyrants with Devourers. The Heldrake is nice thanks to the AP and ignores cover, but it still is S7. Some people like to use Forgefiends with Hades Autocannons even though it's not the most reliable AA platform. However, 8 S8 AP2 shots mean that you'll actually probably get a few hits that will actually help a lot against heavy fliers, and the lower BS of the Forgefiend is less of a problem when firing Snap Shots. I've also heard people using Obliterators as anti-air thanks to their twin linked weapons, but I have no second hand experience on how they fared. ____ In terms of anti-air strategy, it might actually be better to forget about what's in the sky and focus on overwhelming the ground targets while you endure the aerial pummeling.
