PastelAvenger
Hey I'm looking at doing red earthed/Mars style bases for my Sons of Horus army. I think the orangey red would give a nice contrast to the sea foam green. I'm struggling with coming up of a way to make the base dynamic, I'm planning on using Agrellan Earth and painting it red to get the main effect, just by doing this however it would make them rather flat and I want to add maybe some slate or cork to give it some va vs voom. I just were hoping to get people's opinions or examples on what would be the best basing material to use. Cheers Pastel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/305630-mars-style-bases/ Share on other sites
Bryan Blaire
I would use Martian Ironearth, instead of painting Agrellan Earth red. You can also use some gravel/smaller grit to give more texture. If you want to actually simulate Mars, you also can find images of shales, basalt, sandstone, and volcanic rock, as well as conglomerate type material and meteorites there. I've not seen Martian Ironearth on a model properly, so I'm a bit dubious about it. Bryan Blaire
It's red Agrellan Earth... If you are set on cackle and want something other than GW products, there are also plenty of crackle mediums out there and can be found in a lot of common hobby/art stores. Grotsmasha
Gimme 10 mins, I'll grab a pic from the WD. I'm going to be getting some to use on my Guard and March of the Legions models. PastelAvenger
Thanks, I thought Martian Iron earth was like the grit ones not the crackle one, if that makes sense. Ovidius Incertus
In the Skitarii painting video on GW's Youtube channel, they use the Martian Ironearth at the end of the video and it's got some pretty decent images of the finished effect and the color (not to mention that it's got a mini, so you see it in context). I will go take a look but what materials should I be using to give it a more 3 Dimensional feel? I'm leaning towards slate with some weather powders? What do you think?
