It might be hard to believe, but I ordered about 40 from GW directly back in 2006 or so. The others I picked up over time from ebay. I got a great deal on about 25 not long ago and some of the bits sellers get 2-3 in stock every other month. That's how long this project has been going :sad.: I have that many because I plan to do another 10-20 marines with special weapons.

I looked into recasters, but nobody did the upgrade sprue and it was cheaper to buy from ebay even if they did. I even tried casting them myself, but I wasn't satisfied with the results. I'll use those for when I do some bodies or something.

Do I need to go over the entire thing with watered down PVA glue after I get the shape where I want?

I would humbly suggest finding lots of cotton wool. Then spray it black - quick and simple smoke from an explosion. Flames and debris optional. :smile.:

Thanks for the suggestion! I have those too. With tea lights underneath no less!

I want some explosion markers to go along side them, actually. That way when my opponent shoots some artillery my direction I can put an explosion down where it would land. Or, if my thudd guns rip up an enemy line, I can put them down where some of the explosion happened to make it look cinematic. Entirely cosmetic, but fun!

Wait... GW did breacher helmets back in 2006 ?  I wouldn't be very interested to know what they were please, they look great, almost idential to to the MkIII marines from FW.

I can't look upon this thread without some awe factor every time I see your army, just love the colour mix and the mkiii armour :)

No, theyre from the CSM Iron Warriors Upgrade Kit.

Again, thanks for the kind words. Its been a labor of love. Here's where the heads came from:

Which were also my original inspiration for a Legion- Mechanical like Iron Hands, but also practical, and a bit 'knightly' like the MKIII armor we have today. I'm not a big fan of the new direction FW is taking the IW Legion because its so different from what it was years ago.

Thankfully I stocked up on these over the years :smile.:

See, now here's my terrible eye - I would have completely ignored that ... but you found a gem in there and used it to your advantage!  Nice, and thanks for the pic to understand where they were from :)

Minor update from me. I added a new tutorial to the OP: Making bases, painting them, adding skulls to your skull throne. A taste of the content:

Life has been too busy for me to keep up with my hobby, but I've been working away on a few projects despite this. Here's a proof of concept of my upcoming Predator squadron:

... and a rough mockup of upcoming sergeants. Not sure if I'm going to use the Iron Warrior or SOH head. Any opinions?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like the Iron Warrior head is the winner :)

Great tutorial bulbafist, I'm going to give that base method a try for some test models. Previous I've gone for plain gravel on base but your method looks very doable

Glad you enjoyed it- take pictures and share your results with us!

Good sir, I feel like I've commented on a different thread somewhere saying how awesome your Iron Warriors are. Disiregardless (totally a word, and if not, it should be), I feel the need to say your guys are awesome again.

One thing I just noticed though, is the profiles of all your tanks are lacking something - those god-awful exhausts on the sides! I've disliked the Diemos (sp?) pattern of everything because of the piddly looking exhausts, even when the rest of the vehicle looks all kinds of schmexy (looking at you, Vindicators). Did you cut/sand/saw/forcibly remove them, or is it just a matter of not gluing them to the sides? Inquiring minds need to know!

Teach me the ways of the Brofist Pattern STC!

Thanks for the kind words, LongGone. It's been a labor of love for years. Happy other people like them :smile.: I feel your pain about those exhausts, though! I feel they make the boxy profiles of marine tanks even more boxy.

With the Forgeworld kits, like the Diemos, it's as easy as not gluing them on. For regular GW rhinos and vindicators it's a more involved process:

I hacked them off using an chisel shaped exacto knife as you can see in the pictures. I then cut out some plastic card, sanded down the sides, and added them on like extra armor to cover up the holes. For the vindicators I did this twice to give it a layered effect. Then I built little engines in the rear using spare bits and the left over exhausts:

Hope this helps! Are you planning to convert some of your own?

God bless 'Murica, you did some cuttin' on those tanks! Until you showed behind the curtains, I never would have guessed the sides were plasticard, the transition is seamless.

Eventually I'll convert my own. I'm stuck in a barracks room in Japan for another year or so, and space is already at a premium. I'm basically saving money/looking for inspiration until I can get back to the states and put the Master PlanTM into action.

Edit: The exhaust systems you put on the back are converted from dread and Deimos exhausts right?

I've been meaning to ask you for a while, Bulba... where did you get those Chainswords for your Iron Warriors, or did you custom make them? I love the break in the protective covering.

It took lots of research and inspiration to get my own army together- I feel you. But look at it this way- the more time you have to think and plan things out, the better you can execute your vision :) Spot on with the bits I used. A dreadnought exhaust along with the re-purposed ones from the Deimos. I sculpted the cables using greenstuff. For the rhino, the bits are from a defiler.

Thanks for noticing the little detail! That's a pretty simple conversion using regular space marine chainswords. I just cut a small hole in the sword, filed it down, and then carefully cut a strip of teeth from a 2nd chainsword. I glued it into the hole I made and then carefully bent the sword upwards to give it that distinct curved shape:

It might take a few tries to get right, but I think it has a unique look to it. Did that make sense?

I read through your blog on how you zenitheled (totally don't think that's a word) primed. Is it possibly to do that in the painting stage with brushes? I just love love love your paint scheme. I don't have an air brush so kibda tough to achieve those results

Thanks! It's my throwback to the RT era- when you painted your bolters bright green or red :smile.:

Thank you for the kinds words. I'm glad you like the scheme. It took a lot of work to figure out and get right. It's complicated, and to get results like mine you'll need to use oil washes, pigments, and some alcohol metallic paints. You can cut out some of these to get results that are very similar though:

In terms of Zenithal Priming, it'll take more time than it's worth if you use a brush. Do you spray your primer? If you do, then it's super easy. You can use regular old spray on primer to get a Zenthial prime. Then just use a wash like I did on this guy:

.... or thin your paint a lot and use a glaze like I did on this one:

Awesome army and models!

Do you think the big momma cannon would fit a land raider, since i'm pondering about making a budget typhon siege tank.

You bet! A few other people online had the same idea and did the conversion:

If you are looking for a budget Typhon, it's a good option. I'd go as far as magnetizing the front end. It'll take more work, but you'll be able to swap in an assault ramp and use it as a Spartan or Typhon. That'll save you even more money and give you double the options.

Had some 30k in 40k action this weekend on the most gorgeous table I've ever hammed on. You can read the full battle report, and check out the many colored pictures, right here:

I magnetized all the arms so I can swap in power weapons:

I'm also working on a pair of deredeos. What are everyone's thoughts on reverse hinging the legs? The model on the left has them and the model on the right doesn't:
