What goes well with an Executioner

Recommended Posts

The only Guard unit I own is a mostly painted Executioner Russ. I have been working on list ideas and looking toward making my next purchase but I can't seem to arrive at anything I'm happy with. Any advice on what units/ loadouts work well with the LRExecutioner. I'm looking to build a small force of around 1K points and leaning toward mechvets for troops but I keep flip flopping.

Well...it's rare to find a target that needs more than three to five plasma blasts...so the ideal complement to a plasmacutioner is another short-ranged tank, perhaps an eradicator, in a tank commander situation, so you can usually split fire...otherwise, go solo!

And whatever you do, don't deepstrike near its target.

But I always hate to see triple plasma executioners when I play my marines, but the heavy bolters compliment it fairly well for a bit fewer points. And I don't recomend sending it tank hunting, as its main gun is actually pretty bad at killing stuff with an av value.

At 1000 pts, the mech vets will probably do you better, as they can pack a lot of meltas to cover the executioners weakness. I'd throw in a Wyvern/hellhound for dug in infantry, and several chimeras.

Rough LIst

Company Command Squad

Master of the Fleet (bonus for your reserves or a minus on your opponents is quite helpful at 1000 pts)

Chimera, Multilaser, HB

Vet Squad

Heavy Bolter Sponsons

If I did my math correctly, thats 955 pts or 940 if you want flamers on the 3rd squad, so you have some room to fiddle, add upgrades, etc. The vets are a threat to just about anything in the game, and you could easily upgrade them with the points left over. You've got multilasters galore for light tank hunting, meltas for heavy tanks, a wyvern for hordes, Executioner for heavy infantry, a Vendetta for AA, and a nice tank hunter, and a reserve squad of melta/flamer vets for far away objective grabs.

As mentioned the Executioner tends to sort most problems by itself, so a Russ to deal with different targets is generally best. An Eradicator to tackle lighter infantry would work well if you wanted an anti-infantry power house.

I'm a big Executioner fan. I believe that the best compliment to an Executioner is another Executioner. They work wonders in pairs, largely because the enemy will be giving them a fair bit of attention. Also, consider making them part of a Steel Host for the Preferred Enemy bonus; it makes your guns a whole lot safer.

...if you're playing in an environment that allows such things.  Otherwise, put the plasmacutioner in a squadron with pask to get the same effect (preferred enemy), and just use the split fire order.
