What happens to successor chapters if a parent falls?

Ok, I am toying with ideas for an army project, for a homegrown chapter. I am thinking of basing something off of the Astral Claws, but as they fell to chaos as the Red Corsairs, combined with the fact that I am not crazy about their paint scheme I was wondering ... what happens to successor chapters if a parent falls to chaos? Is this spelled out in the fluff?

Would they be hunted as heretics or potential heretics because of the origin of their geneseed? Or would they be allowed to continue on and prove their loyalty? I was thinking that my successor might be especially millitant and vociferous for the Emperor as a means of proving their loyalty in contrast to the parent chapter.

Thanks for any feedback!

I've been pondering this recently myself, I suspect they'd come under severe inquisitorial investigation to determine if they shared their parents' taint.

If any of their parent chapter escaped justice and the successor was proven pure they might be sent to hunt down and purge them as proof of their loyalty to the Emperor, probably with an Inquisitor breathing over their shoulders for a century or two.

It would depend on the circumstances of their parent Chapter's fall. Genetic causes would almost certainly spark a lot of witch-hunting (pun sort of intended) amidst the Chapter's successors. If the Chapter didn't have frequent contact with its successors, or fell whilst on extended deployment far away from its successors, and in both cases the motive behind the fall was that of a change in ideology or simple self-preservation, I imagine the situation would be a little different. There would almost certainly be great pressure - both of their own making, and from external agencies like the Inquisition - on the successors to avenge the stain on their honour and cleanse their parent Chapter, however.

It would probably also depend on how influential each Chapter was. As long as the Chapter that fell isn't one of the Big 9 and how far down the Successor was would probably determine some of this. Also, if they are a couple Foundings removed, there's probably less of an impact, unless the two Chapters were known to be joined together more tightly.

More then likely the original parent chapters from the big nine would help hunt down because of the stains on their own honor and their own successor would either assist or get out of the originals way

I make reference to the soul drinkers and the Crimson fist and imperial fist

After the successor proves its loyalty by hunting down and destroying the parent, I presume the Inquisition will order the Chapter to destroy its own records of its founding, and then list itself as being of an "unknown" founding- if it has a strong enough patron, it may receive forged records stating it's the successor of a loyalist Legion, NOT of traitors (see 1d4chan's article on the Silver Skulls).

It depends on the Chapter to be honest. If it were the Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Ultramarines or one of their successors which seem to be a tighter knit group. As far as the others I don't think it would have as much of an impact. While their may be whispers I don't feel they would be put under a microscope.

Time would also be a factor. A Chapter formed in an early Founding, with thousands of years of its own history, would be viewed with less suspicion if their parent Chapter later went rogue. Whereas a young Chapter who were created a few hundred years before their parent fell would be far more likely to be suffering the same issues.

Of course, if one of the big, famous 'First Founding Legion' Chapters fell (say for example the DA's secrets were uncovered), that kind of news would ripple through the entire Imperium and the reputations of all their Successors would be irreparably tarred. Not that I can see GW ever taking that step.

Tacking on with what has already been said, it can also depend on who has this info and what their character is, and the other shoe might not drop all that soon after an event.

All it took was one inquisitor with a grudge to spark a decades long skirmish between the Grey Knights and the Space Wolves.

Imagine if, instead of the Space Wolves, it was a successor of the Astral Claws. Or the Sons of Malice. Or a Chapter sent on the Abyssal Crusade.
