Figuring out what to buy

Recommended Posts

Hello brothers and sisters of the heresy. So my red books are coming in and I was thinking to move onto what I'm buying for the Horus heresy. I don't really know what to get. About the only thing that I have figured out is to buy the mk 4 strike force and maybe some night lords shoulder pads. Should I keep the tactical marines in the bundle as tactical marines or should I change them for a terror squad? I really don't know what to get. So far the terror assault sounds interesting but I don't know if that would be too similar to 40k for me and might be boring. I have set $400 for horus heresy models if someone could help me work with figuring what to spend with that amount to quote a certain boss That would be greaaaaat".

Terror assault + volkite = hilarious martian death ray fun! A packet or 2 of volkites, a pack of shoulder pads, a terror squad upgrade kit, Sevatar, your box of strike forcey lovliness, something in a dreadnought chassis, a squad of termies of your choice, plus upgrades of your choice, and there may be something left to get a bag o skulls from wherever Augustus B'Raass gets them from, and some fine chain, for dangly skulls on chains!

Alright sounds good. Is the terror assault fun? I mean does it get dull and boring fast? Also I was thinking a contemptor with dual kheres for anti tank. Or a melta. The idea is to use sevater to infiltrate the contemptors up the field and he himself either infiltrates with the Terror squad or comes in a pod. Then use sevaters ability to deepstriked some termie squads near him.

A question is it worth it to go and get the free shipping? It's an awful lot to spend.

So far here's my buying list:

Mk 4 strike force

2 night lords shoulder pads

2 Terror squad helmets

1 volklite gun

That's about 209 pounds. What else is good? Is there something that all marines should have? Maybe a contemptor?

Regular mortis dreads are pretty cool, but for a points crunch is recommend the new Deredeo dreadnought. It can kill any AV13 on the field or in the air and it's missile launchers have almost a 100% chance of killing three marines a turn if they don't have an apothecary.

Plus a NL Deredeo would look boss as hell :D

Other than that, I'd recommend terminators, they do soo much better in the 30k meta. They also synergize well will Sevatar's atramentar rule.

For hq I'll most likely get sevater and convert the captain to a delagus. I'll include some catapratchtii to the order.

You don't need a Delegatus if you have Sevatar. Sev already has Master of the Legion, so you can model the captain to represent another officer.

With shipping and handling (at 15% based on your location of not UK) you are looking at a cost of £240.35, so for an extra £9.65, you are technically getting £41 of models.

Got my book which makes things a lot easier for figuring out what to get.Alright cool thanks everyone. It seems unfortunately that the cattapratii is out of stock and tartaros looks too ugly for me. How long does it take forgeworld to restock something? I really don't know what to get anymore I just need one more item. I added sevater and apothecaries because I just found out that they can be attached to terror squads. I don't know what to get. Do I need the terror squad helmets to make terror squads look like they are? Should I go with the 30 man legion bundle instead since I'm getting sevater? The only unit I can think of is night raptors maybe? Otherwise I might just wait for the cata squad to come back. Any other units that are generally useful? At the minute for what I have right now I feel like I'm not getting all that many models. It feels like it's whole lot going just into 2 terror squads. I sure hope that they are good.

Edit: at the minute I have:

Legion mk 4 strike force

2 shoulder pads

2 terror squad helmets

2 volklite chargers

Sevater

Apothecaries.

245 pounds. I need one more thing. I was thinking to take out the shoulder pads but it seems there are no transfers for night lords. Maybe I should just get one charger set? Maybe just one terror squad helmet pack? I have no clue. I was thinking an contemptor or deredo. It seems like this list is pretty good on anti infantry so maybe some anti monstrous creatures? Are contemptors suited for that?

@Helterskelter I saw the deredo on your wip plog. I absolutely love it. I got rid of 1 terror squad helmets I figured that I can just split them up. So all I need is just one more model/squad for that sweet sweet free shipping. I've figured out three that I'm thinking to get:

1: wait a week and get a catapratchtii terminator squad

2: a night raptor squad

3: get rid of the apothecaries and grab myself a contemptor or deredo.

Also should I switch out the strike force for the tactical squad bundle?

I'd drop the Apothecaries for a Deredeo/Contemptor. They bring more to your force than apothecaries at the moment.

Cool now to figure out which one I want. The deredo will need converting because it looks not all that great looking at the minute. The contemptor will give me some cc boost though I have no idea what to equip him with. The deredo is a nice fire support unit.

@ kurama for the same price that they'll sell the imperator for I can myself a decently used car. And it's probalby the same size as an imperator as well lol.

I'd stay away from getting the shoulder pads as its just one more thing to order when you want to expand on your collection; the helmets are fine as you can mix them through your units and some guys can have normal mkiv helmets, but the pads really stand out. If you're getting a contemptor get 2 assault cannons to make a mortis as theyre cheaper than a cc one and 12 bs 5 asssault cannon shots a turn is brutal, plus it can double as AA

Still way too expensive compared to a mortis with double kheres. 25 more points and you get CC while losing all AA (and intercept) and half your shots

A mortis with Double Kheres is pretty sub-par option if you consider the Deredeo mostly because the Deredeo has double its range.

For roughly the same cost, A deredeo gets you 4 48" S8 Sunder Skyfire/Interceptor Shots + 3 60" S6 Ap3 Pinning Missiles which always hit side armor and don't need LoS to be shot at targets which also gains Skyfire/Interceptor if the Deredeo doesn't moove. Also, both weapons can be shot at different targets.

Its not 12 S6 Rending shots but its more guaranteed damage against vehicles and a longer uptime on shooting output due to range.

If you want an all-round decent Contemptor Threat, you get 1 Kheres and a Chainfist with Grav, imo.

If you NEED anti air, get the Dere, if you want an all rounder Slips has my vote.  Remember, if you are restricting your current order and have plans for a future order, then remember you can always magnetise the Contemptors arms for future adjustments, but you can't increase the Kheres range and add the buffs a dere gets if you need the anti air first.

If you don't mind using the latest plastic tacticals and sourcing the MkIV pieces (legs, chest), you can use your left over spare heads (after using the head upgrade set) to create a few more - since the plastic MkIV heads aren't so nice on the eye whilst the body pieces could more easily blend in.  In addition, think about what you want to do with your shoulder pads given your budget.  To make up the entire force with legion specific pads is pricey (ie by the time you bought a few packs you could get another unit).  I have a few for my legion to mix in, but they will be on a limited scale, it's also allowed me to use the left over pads to help create a few more tacticals.  But of note is that a lot of people leave off the left shoulder pad even after painting the entire mini, waiting for the legion specific pad - so that in the future you can always give everyone a legion specific pad or just bite the bullet and put on normal ones.

If you're unsure, source one set of heads and one set of shoulders, giving you ten uniform marines all 'badged' up.  I decided the price wasn't worth it, but as much as I like uniformity, I'm going to end up with a few mixed armour marks and a few with legion specific pieces just so I have a bit of everything.
