Ovidius Incertus
I've got a Cerastus Castigator waiting to be built and would like to magnetize the waist (and perhaps the arms). What size magnet will give a solid hold? What about the arms (at the shoulders)? Nykidemus
Depends on what sort of leverage you need. The Castigator is pretty straight up and down, so fairly light mags will work to keep the arms attached at the elbow say, but they wouldnt hold very firm, and could flop about a bit. Dont know about you, but that makes me nuts. Putting some pins in around the magnet can keep it straight, or you can just use a way stronger magnet.Having more surface area on the magnet tends to make it hold better vs rotational force and shearing, but the deeper ones will have more pull. For the waist I would recommend something along these lines https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DE2For the arms you'll probably want something lighter, both to fit, and so you can pull it apart with less force, since the arms are a bit spindly. Probably one of these guys and a pin if you want to keep the arm from spinning.https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D82Fair warning though, I like my magnetics to stick like their lives depend on it. You can totally get away with less force if you're ok with having your piece a bit floppy. Ovidius Incertus
Those were actually the sizes I was thinking about. I've got the smaller ones on hand, but was going thinking of magnetizing at the shoulder. I haven't fully cleaned all my pieces, so I don't know how effective it'd be. I was thinking that I'd magnetize the ammo feed belt at both ends with a 1/8" diameter magnet. I'll have to pick up the waist magnet, and was looking for something more to keep it from rotating, rather than something I'd need to pull super hard on to get apart. Kilofix
1/4" by 1/16" Pic is for an Acheron but I did the same for the Castigator. I'll see if I can find the Castigator pic. Do yourself a favor and get the appropriate 1/4" size powered drill bit. Nykidemus
If you want it to be easy to pull apart, but not rotate, you are going to need to pin it in place or get couple of square bars. If you do two bar magnets they'll keep it oriented, but you may want to put in a pin or recess them anyway, depending on how strong you get. A circular magnet strong enough to keep it from spinning will be VERY strong.I used a pair of 15 pound ~2 inch squares for the base on my Fire Raptor and recessed it into the body of the ship a bit and it's phenomenal. You can hold it upside down by the flight base and it sticks, but if you hold the base and lever the flight stand off at an angle it pops off no problem.
