2 Stormravens: Own the skies? Or lame ducks?

I'm kind of stuck on this concept, and can't figure it out through theory hammer and it's a somewhat... expensive decision.

To put it simply- Is there a strong case for or against using 2 Stormravens in a Grey Knight list.... let's say for context we're talking about 1850 pts.

Here's the thing, on the surface, since I like the concept of Purifiers, this seems like a valid way to bring 10-15-20 of them... I haven't figured that part out yet.

But in the meantime, I'm finding my 'bulky' HQ's are killing my lists. As a result I am having trouble getting ONE Stormraven into my list. Not because I can't see any value in it, but because I seem to always place greater value on something else in our already small model count....

I confess with Ultra's I had one, but only used it once for a Terminator assault idea. That army seemed to have better choices. (I personally prefer the glass cannon Stormtalons for their points, or just avoid flyers completely).

What do you guys think?

Bare minimum Libby (no Cuirass, no PML3) for HQs, should ease the burden somewhat.

To be honest, the only time I ever used two Stormravens was when they were first released.

I ran a Bangle list with two Ravens carrying 5 Sanguinary Guard with Priest and a Dual Blood Talon Dread (later swapped for a Frag Cannon/Magna Grapple), with Dante attached to an Honour Guard squad in reserves.

I tabled the lists I faced, and left folk grumbling.  Our Ultra player nearly cried when a Dread disembarked and went snip snip through an entire squad.

But this was back in the day of 5th edition.

I doubt the list would work as well now. ;)

I think it's doable, but it's gonna depend a lot on matchups. Against lists without much relevant Skyfire or Interceptor? Sure, they're a fantastic gunboat. Against lists with potent Skyfire or Interceptor? You'll lose one, so taking another means you get at least one of them.

Also depends on the rest of your list. If you're planning on going Purifier heavy but you're not taking Allied drop pods, it's fantastic. But Terminators and Strikes don't need a transport, neither do Interceptors. Purgators are trash so they don't matter.

I run dual ravens since they have been released with my BA. However BA can build army around them while GK seems to me to be much more positional army

However I can imagine you can use 2 for combat sq of 10 naked (or inc) purifiers just for the clensing flame madness. If I remeber it correctly you are able to cast CF out of SR even with out hatch. Than get into hower and lunch the assault.

I've run two storm ravens a couple of times and I find it to be a situational build rather than a core to build your list around. I like it more from a fluff/fun point of view as I figure it is how grey knights and marines arrive at the scene; deep striking, drop podding and storm raven:ening into the thick of it. Bringing in both ravens while humming the ride of the valkyries does bring a certain sense of satisfaction I have to admit. Of course while proclaiming "if I say it is safe to surf, it is safe to surf!" :)

No, you cannot cast Cleansing Flame from a SR, as Witchfire powers require a firing point.

However, you can take a locator beacon on the Raven, and then dump the Purifiers out as you Zoom as per the Shadow Skies rule (or whatever they call it now). No scatter Deepstrike, and you can 'Cleansing Flame' to your hearts content. Also, the Purifier bombing happens after the Raven moves, so you get a lot of freedom in terms of where to place them (6" from an access point, or at any point over which the Raven just moved).

Of course, preferably you'd wait till Turn 3, go into Hover mode, disembark+'Cleansing Flame'+shoot+charge. But you have to pull the trigger earlier.

I've come to the conclusion at 1850 it's just too many points in one basket. I'd love to try it but I just sold off my second Stormraven, and to be frank after a nail biting game waiting for one huge payload to come in, I can't imagine waiting for 2.

There's merit in taking comms with 1 Stormraven, but 2? It's almost certain you'd want it. However now we're talking a lot of points, and a small army that gets a lot smaller with so many points dedicated to the reserve cause.

Uh oh. Just the name sounds ugly. lol

It's the formations I worry about. It's one thing that the models seem strong in general, but as we've learned from the Decurion, it's the formation that can take it to a whole new level of stupid. :)
