Advice needed - how do you paint your robes?

As some of you might know, I game/model with the 1st legion for the Horus heresy. I use robes sparsely due to them being less influenced by Caliban at the time and to look more heresy-ish, but on a few elites and character units, I model robes on.

Now, I'm not too experienced with painting the cream colored robes of the Dark Angels and would like advice. What paints should I use and what steps should I take? GW paints are preferable as they are the most readily available to me.

Here is the guy I will need to paint :)

Thanks for any advice on how to paint robes!

Usually its black basecoat, ushabti bone with a screaming skull highlight, then a wash of agrax earth shade to get a real dirty look going with my robes, the pristine white just doesn't work for me, not when they're on a grimy 40k battlefield.

I use: Bone layer, brown wash, Bone drybrush, Chestnut wash, Bone drybrush, Skin wash, Bone drybrush, Off White highlight, Agrax wash.

I've found the layering gives it visual depth and makes it look like a softer material than the armour.

Nice green-stuffing by the way :tu:

I prefer to do the following for "bone" colors:

1) Mournfang Brown base coat

2) Agrax Earthshade is all recesses and crevasses

3) Layer up from recesses with Mournfang Brown

4) Layer 75% up to Zandri Dust (moving toward places of brightest light)

5) Layer 50% up to Ushtabi Bone (continue working toward points of highest light)

6) Layer 25% up to Screaming Skull (highest areas)

7) At this point, you can decide to either mix and layer 5-10% 1:1 Screaming Skull:White Scar or just move on to step 8

8) Final spot highlight with White Scar on the very brightest points
