Warlord Traits

CC's Great Unclean One rolled Lord of Unreality from the Daemon codex (re-rolls on the Warp Storm table) and I, having the Veritas Vitae relic got two – Soulwarden (Adamantium Will) and Master of Ambush (I get to choose three non-vehicle units to infiltrate).

... I was scared. That was a lot of potential pain he could bring in a phase that was effectively wholly his own!

I won the roll and decided to let the Daemons deploy first...

DAEMONS DEPLOYMENT

The two Daemon Princes in forward positions with a Great Unclean One (other is in deep strike reserve) and Pink Horrors behind one ruin, and the ten plague bearers behind the other.

BLOOD ANGELS DEPLOYMENT

I kept the Predator at long range, camped the scouts in the ruin, put a combat squad in cover and infiltrated a little way forward with the other combat squad in the rhino. This proved a costly mistake as we shall see. I had wanted to infiltrate behind the Plague Bearers, eager to bathe them in burning promethium, but the Daemons had deployed in such a way that I couldn't meet the 18" requirement. Stormraven with Death Company & Chaplain in reserve, and Sanguinary Guard, Priest and assault marines in drop pod all in deep strike reserve.

DAEMONS TURN 1

A Daemon Prince glides in and takes out the scout sergeant with a psychic shooting attack. Note to self: don't put the sergeant at the front...

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4180.jpg

Now we see the result of my deployment error – the other Daemon Prince glides in, summons three Flamers of Tzeentch and charges the rhino destroying it and killing three marines in the explosion, including the heavy flamer. The remaining two marines run away (who can blame them?!). One of the Tzeentch also loses a wound.

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 1

The drop pod comes crashing in disgorging the melta-armed assault marines upon the Pink Horrors and taking out three. Not really an optimal target for them but I did want to take these guys out. However this was my second major placement error as we'll see shortly (they really should have picked a different door to disembark from...).

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4184.jpg

The retreating marines gather their courage and return to the fray, joined by their squad sergeant and battle brothers. Between them they take down all but one of the Flamers. The Daemon Prince makes consolidation towards another prize...

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4182.jpg

DAEMONS TURN 2

The second Great Unclean One and unit of Plague Bearers arrive from the Warp (not pictured).

The Daemon Prince turns back incredulous against the bold but foolhardy marines. The Flamer also cackles in delight as it burns another marine to ashes inside his armour.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4186.jpg

Three more Flamers are summoned and they take out a scout a piece.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4187.jpg

Note: I think we played this wrong. We agreed the templates from these guys could be used in plan view to cover the three scouts on the top floor, whereas the template should really be positioned touching the firing model meaning they could only really get the one scout on the lower level. Vertical elevation should be taken into consideration as it is with all other measurements.

The placement error I mentioned earlier. Assault marines are easy meat for a Great Unclean One.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4188.jpg

Combat goes unsurprisingly badly for the marines. The last remaining battle brother from one combat squad temporarily flees the action once again. For good or ill? We shall see...

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 2

The Sanguinary Guard and Priest descend from reserve (not pictured) but the Stormraven carrying the Death Company and Chaplain are delayed – much to the chagrin of the general.

Assault squad lost.

Tactical squad lost bar one.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4193.jpg

DAEMONS TURN 3

The other Daemon Prince had descended upon the relic unhindered during the previous turn and he now hands it over to the deep striking Plague Bearers. He has taken a wound, possibly from the Predator.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4195.jpg

More Plague Bearers are summoned.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4196.jpg

The forces of Nurgle lumber forth from their stinking miasma and converge on the bright shining light of the Sanguinary Guard and their Priest.

The Daemon Prince who snatched the Relic suffers fatal injury from a Warp Storm!

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4198.jpg

The Flamers jump up onto the top of the ruin (we forgot dangerous terrain test) and burn the last remaining scout.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4199.jpg

Half the Sanguinary Guard are taken down by the Great Unclean One but they manage to reduce it to one wound in a bitter fight.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4200.jpg

Across the battlefield the other Great Unclean One makes short work of the Predator. I should have moved flat out instead of shooting.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4201.jpg

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 3

The Sanguinary Guard, bolstered by their Priest finally lay waste to the Great Unclean One, and the Plague Bearers. Reinforcements finally arrive for the Blood Angels – and not a moment too soon!

...

DAEMONS TURN 4

The remaining Daemon Prince swoops over the Stormraven raking it's claws across the hull in a vector strike, but the ceramite plating holds.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4209.jpg

The summoned Plague Bearers charge the Sanguinary Guard but underestimate the wrath of their blades.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4207.jpg

The last remaining tactical marine fights desperately with the foul Tzeentch flamer, who is down to one wound.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4208.jpg

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 4

The Death Company, shepherded by their Chaplain leap forth from the Stormraven, shoot up the Plague Bearers with bolt pistol fire and claim the Relic.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4210.jpg

The lone battle brother strikes a fatal blow upon the Flamer, later securing this quarter for the Imperium.

The Sanguinary Guard lay waste to the Pink Horrors.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4212.jpg

DAEMONS TURN 5

Three Death Company are taken out by the advancing Tzeentch flamers.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4215.jpg

Seven Pink Horrors are summoned from a Warp Storm.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4216.jpg

Yet more Death Company fall to a combination of Enfeeble and Hellfire Gaze from the Daemon Prince and Great Unclean One, costing them possession of the Relic.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4217.jpg

They are then charged by the Flamers.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4218.jpg

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 5

The Sanguinary Guard join the fray and the Flamers are destroyed.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4220.jpg

DAEMONS TURN 6

The Daemon Prince must make a choice between the Guard and Death Company. He chooses the Guard and lays waste to all. He then makes a consolidation move bringing him into base contact with the Relic.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4223.jpg

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 6

The remaining Death Company suicidally charge the Daemon Prince. None are left alive save the Chaplain but, crucially, this denies his claim on the relic in the following turn.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4226.jpg

DAEMONS TURN 7

The enraged Daemon Prince strikes a mortal blow on the Chaplain but he dies with honour, having shepherded his fallen brethren to their rightful end and denying the forces of Chaos their prize.

http://www.themightybrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_4227.jpg

BLOOD ANGELS TURN 7

The Stormraven pilot has been steadily hovering backwards while the gunner fires on the Great Unclean One reducing it to one wound, but alas is unable to finish it off.

That deserves to be turned into a short story...so grimdark it hurts.

Perhaps the world they fought on was the site of some shrine that the BA were honor bound to prevent from desecration. Perhaps it was a fertile human world with no protection and the BA felt they had to preserve the nascent innocence at all costs...

You can see the narrative almost write itself: the BA commander realizing his follies, letting the Scout aspirants die in such a horrible way and choosing that he too would go down in battle to avenge those he let down...

...and though a terrible toll was taken by the BA, especially among the Elite Sanguinary Guard, they won at all costs and that is all that matters...

Cheers Bukimimaru. Yeah I was almost tabled at one point, but in a monumental bit of fluffy gaming the Death Company came storming in to save the day smile.png

Love when story and game meet on the table.

I was playing against a Nurgle list the other day.

His Forgeworld varient Defiler killed a whole squad of Tac Marines in one shot apart from one lucky Multi-melta weilding marine.

He moved 6" to get into melta range, managed to snapshot his heavy weapon and blew up the foul beast.

So against the odds it should never have happened, but it was a proud moment for the now named "Sir Melts-alot".
