Quick question about pigments

Recommended Posts

I've decided to try pigments out so I've ordered some from a variety of sources but then it occurred to me all the guides I've read suggest applying a coating of alcohol onto it after the fact to help hold it on... but nobody says what kind of alcohol. What should I be getting and where do I get it from please?

Yeah, should be the same. What I do is load up a cheap brush with a bit of it, then just gently touch it to a spot where I've applied the pigment. I'm careful not to move the brush at all as this can leave streaks. The spirits have a very low viscosity, and capillary action pulls the liquid across the surface quite easily. You can see it spread, and then if you need more you can add another drop a bit further on and just continue that til the whole surface has had a bit of it. It doesn't take much. After that it should be set well enough that you can spray it with a matte varnish or however you usually finish your models. I've been told you can spray the spirits on to achieve a similar effect if you have an airbrush but I've never bothered with that. I'd be worried the air would push it around but if you set it to a low enough PSI it would probably be fine.

When they say alcohol for pigments, it usually means isopropyl or rubbing alcohol.
