Prot's Final (?) Grey Knight Army Pics.

Well I think this might be it for me on my Grey Knight journey.

For several reasons I decided last night to get my stuff together and take pictures of it. So this is not a 'sale' post, but rather I wanted to celebrate my time with the mighty sons of Titan by posting the auction pictures I took last night.

I'm really happy with how they turned out, and they were quite different and pretty fun to play:

(You haven't seen all of these!)

This is my entire Painted force:

This was my first, finishde Termie squad!

And yesterday, I just finished this Paladin/Termie squad: (Unfortunately I ran out of special basing, so I lightly glued these on basic bases, but I think they look good finally finished:

And... I did finish 5 Purifiers:

And of course the workhorses of the army!

I'm really glad I magnetized these back packs for interceptor/strike duty:

The men leading the charge: Libby and Draigo!

I couldn't wait for ETL. I really enjoyed painting these guys... especially Draigo.

I hope you guys like these. I don't think I was this enthused to paint an army in a very long time. (perhaps my Ultra's?) But I spent zillions of hours on these guys, and it never felt like work. :)

Ace work, these guys are smashing!

Holy Emprah of mankind those are amazing! Kinda makes me self-conscious about my lack of productivity mellow.png

That's very kind of you guys. Thanks for the positive feedback. The army was a pleasure to work on... it does have some serious short comings but I enjoyed the challenge of a small model count, but always felt I 'had a chance' with them even playing strictly from the codex. I was on quite the little win streak there.

The models match the background so well. The sculpts are all fantastic.. not like some armies where you're dealing with a mix of stuff you really like and some dated junk you feel obligated to use!

The lack of options is a bit of a turn off but what the army does well, it does really well. The NDK are a lot of fun to paint... heck the whole army is, but Draigo was probably my favorite sculpt.... the shield alone is crazy good. I did my best to name all his banners/oaths but writing that small is darn hard. lol

The bases cost me a small fortune, and thus I didn't get the bases for the Paladins, but oh well. It wouldn't be much work for someone to finish them off.

Thanks. We'll see.

I'm contemplating getting rid of my Necrons, Ultramarines, and/or Grey Knights. (I'm holding onto Chaos, and I THINK Dark Angels.) I haven't decided entirely as I'm getting a lot of different advice, and while the army is super limited for me, I love the way it looks and plays so far.

Downsizing, or?

I have 4 power armoured armies. Dark Angels, Ultramarines, Grey Knights, and Crimson Slaughter.

Oddly enough they all play very different. My only xenos army right now is Necrons, and it's big... sorry I can't show pictures here obviously.

Power Armoured army wise- I've been actively collecting, painting, and playing all of these armies. It's insanity. lol

It costs me to much, plus the time I've been sinking in is crazy. I enjoy playing a lot but enjoy painting just as much! (I actually really enjoy the background of the game as well and am done a few GK novels, and well into the Ben Counter Omnibus right now.)

The Dark Angels were one of my first loyalist armies. But to sell them is a loss. My Grey Knights are probably my funnest army to paint right now, and play, however they are limited in codex options. (basically I think if I make Purgators, and some razorbacks, MAYBE a landraider(?), I'm done.)

Ultramarines play very different from Grey Knights, and while I don't have the same sense of 'clobberin' time' from the Ultra's, they have a lot of units I like to rotate.... good flyers, unique units that change the feel of the army, etc.

I gotta be honest though, the more I play Grey Knights, the less I like Tactical Marines. This is a weird outcome I never foresaw. This is why Dark Angels are 'okay'. Termies as troops and bikes as troops makes it a little more interesting. (I do think tactical marines and terminators for loyalists need significant change in today's game.)

Sorry, I'm babbling.... so with 4 somewhat similar armies, I feel I need to pair down, especially if DA or Ultra's might be around the corner. Something has to go. This might be my most 'sellable' army. We'll see. It's something I thought I was going to sell... today, but I chickened out.

Great looking army with just the right smount of details, blue force works as a great contrast and bases are really nice. Hats off and applause!

As for selling off armies; I'd hold on to them to see what the new C:SM brings. If they fluke it and marines suck, ditch the ultras. If they bring marines up square with necdar, keep on rocking! :)

Prot  you are a fantastic painter I am not a grey knights player at all but I certainly appreciate that you seem to try and do diffrent things with your lists ( as in trying out units that others dont think are too solid )  and offer as much help to this board as possible , You are an asset to B&CS  and I really do love the painting youve done on  the GK

I hope you  find the time to pick up an imperial knight and paint one

Your work truly is inspiring.

Well guys that is some ridiculously nice things to say. Honestly, in my many years here I don't think I've seen that kind of reaction to me selling off an army.

But be careful what you wish for!

I think I had the army sold. I canceled it last night. I just couldn't do it. At least not now. I've been enjoying this kind of unorthodox marine army so much. After 18 years of army swapping you kind of feel like you've played everything...!

Also painting this army is perhaps one of the top 1-3 armies I've ever painted. And sometimes you have a great idea for painting, but when you see it as a finished product, you aren't too enthused about it. Not the case with these guys....

So I had some additional offers, and I pulled it off the market. I just felt a lot of regret putting it up for sale. Then when it became very real (losing it). I decided against it.

So here we are.... thinking of what to do for ETL! lol

It's crazy because I keep trying to thin down my armies, but can't seem to sell any right now. I've sold so many armies in the past. It's weird but I'm having trouble parting with them now.

Thanks for the amazing compliments guys. Greatly appreciated!

I know it's a lot to ask but I (and probably other too smile.png ) would greatly appreciate a short how-to on your Grey Knights where you touch on the colors and some of the techniques used. I'm always looking for ways to improve my painting and your colour palette seems brighter and stronger than mine. Maybe it's the lighting but I think it's something about the highlighting. Also love the blue sheen on the aegis armours.

To Prot:  Well, I'll say it.. I'm glad you didn't sell your GK dude.  You write good battle reports and start good conversations, so as a community we all stand to benefit from you remaining on Titan.  Just sayin.   I know what you mean about having a huge pile of models, I have tons and tons and tons and I don't play nearly as much as I should, but that was one of the things that originally drew me to GK.. low model count.  You can build 2500 points of GK for way cheaper than just about any other army.

All your models look fantastic and I'm sure the rest of your armies look just as good. Pulling 25 dudes out of a box painted the way yours are and going to town is something you wont get with any other army.  (maybe a flying circus or MC heavy nid list..? )

I know in the short time Ive been assembling my GK they have really grown on me.  I'm naming each dude and coming up with unique markings etc.. super nerdy.  Love it.

Good deal, glad you decided to keep 'em.  Just remember, as the design team gets better and better at figuring out what they want to do in this new era, they're likely to really improve the Grey Knights in 8e.  I'd bet that we won't stay so one-dimensional next go-around.

Ye word in thee Emprah's mouth!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

You bet. I don't think there's any magic to what I do. It's a slow process, but in this case it may appear fast because I've enjoyed painting the army so much that it often consumes all my spare time!

But when things slow down a bit, I'll definitely do this properly for anyone that would want to see it. It's a great compliment that anyone would want to see it. Thank you!
