I personally think the Nemesis DreadKnight looks bad ass, it's a Grey Knight inside of a daemon slaying battlesuit!

Oh yea, I agree. I've heard the 'baby sling' comment but it just bounces off of me.

For me? A super Knight for Grey Knights should be: A giant Emperor shaped Robot, with a Dreadknight in it, and then a GK Termie inside that. Full of win.

I really didn't dig the model too much when it first came out, but it grew on me.  Any giant suit of robotic armor that is built for kicking ass so hard that the pilot is required to wear terminator armor is certainly going to be legendary.   And of course since the unit lives up to this expectation it makes it feel twice as good, rather than looking super cool and being composed of pure suck, like warp talons etc..

TDA is enclosed.

Well if you take Briareos to be the TDA suit, the Landmate encloses around him.

Unlike our exposed TDA sticking out on the front.

If you only want unarmoured people in Landmates, then they're more like suits of TDA themselves to our NDK. :(

I alwasy thought Centurion sohuld have little land mate Power Armour arms sticking out.  The crossed chest thing is bunk.

I think the reason DK's are designed the way there are is twofold. Firstly, from a modelling perspective, it's easy to quickly identify a Dreadknight as being a GK unit by having one of their iconic Terminators centerpiece to the model (it's also why it's piston central, to make it look heavy and mechanical, a signature aesthetic of all Marine stuff). Secondly, for lore reasons, the GK want a mech they can strap around a normal GK warrior (it's not meant to replace a GK, it's meant to augment an already formidable warrior into a monster that can fight other monsters). The likelyhood is that the mech might take incredible damage but the operator may survive. In that instance, they want the warrior within to survive. Thus, he's still in a normal suit of TDA, so even if he needs to bail on the exoskeleton, he's still a Terminator.

I leave the outer harness off mine, to leave the pilot even more exposed. Gives the impression that while he's securely strapped in, he can still shed the exoskeleton if he has to. Plus it looks better IMO

I think all the GK heraldry and iconography covering the model (plus the paintscheme!) would do the same. ;)

Personally, even tohugh it's based on Xeno tech that wouldn't leave the pilot exposed, I think the 'design' reason would be to show it as a MC, rather than a vehicle.

If the pilot were fully enclosed (Centurion aren't fully enclosed, their backs are just about open), why wouldn't the NDK be a Walker rather than an MC?

Yeah there is that too, but I'm talking aesthetically. You also have to consider the symbology in the design as well ie the Grey Knight is at the heart of this big exo-suit. The exo-suit is mighty, but it's the Grey Knight that elevates it into the warp-slaying monster machine we all know and love.

It's not based on xeno-tech, that's just hinted at as a flirt. It's quite clearly a re-jig of existing Legio Cybernetica tech. If you don't believe me, look at the Forge World Castellax, Vorax and Thanatar. The Dreadknight isn't as heavy (it's designed to be used by a Marine, not a dumb semi-AI, so it needs dexterity and agility commensurate with one), and it's taller, but the same hydraulics, pistons, frame etc are re-used. The toes are different, and of course it has actual hands (not clamps), because it's mean to be a giant Marine skeleton around a real Grey Knight. I personally think it's one of the boldest designs GW has ever produced. They've made something wholly original, but still rooted in very clear aesthetic and design principles. It's a giant robot, but it's unlike any other robot the Imperium has. It fights like a Marine, but on a scale and power level beyond all but a Primarch.

I think GW wanted to avoid making another Dreadnought, because we already have those and it's an acknowledgement on their part that Dreadnoughts don't stand up to Daemons well at all (why don't you give us Contemptors then GW?).

Nah, it needs Xenos tech.  And the hint wasn't subtle.  Not with the GK using Necron tesserects.

It needs the Xenos tech to make it more MC than Vehicle.  If it was pure Mars tech, it would be some sort of Walker.  The nod to Xenos elevates it away from being just another armoured suit / metal box. (Edit: Or Aliens power lifter)

When the first pics of the NDK leaked, they were small and blurry.  My mates originally thought it looked amazing.  Then when they realised;

1: There was no 'head'

2: The TDA dude is strapped to the outside

They just laughed.

Me, I quite like the NDK.  But I prefer the many different conversions folk have done with Dreadnought bodies to enclose the pilot.

I still don't get why GW didn't make Tau more 'anime' when they revamped them a while ago (although the 'tide is getting there somewhat).

What does that have to do with anyting? The pokeballs are a completely different technology, and one the Grey Knights no longer employ because it doesn't suit their purposes really. Necrons don't build mechs anyway.

Legio Cybernetica. They have well-established technologies dating to before the Imperium, and they even look largely the same. The Dreadknight benefits from a more compact fusion reactor (to make room for the pilot, which obviously isn't an issue on Castellax etc), a taller frame, and considerations given to it's usage and pilot requirements (ie it's probably lighter and more agile than the robot it's based off, because it needs speed).

which obviously isn't an issue on Castellax etc

They're all vehicles/walkers though, aren't they?

Anyway, the NDK could have been designed as a more awesome exo frame, if it was built around the Grey Knight, instead of him being strapped out front.

No, the Mechanicum Bots are all MC's.

Thanatars being T7 or 8, Castellax T6(iirc) and Thallax being T5.

Just a head up, Thallax are neither MCs nor robots. They're modified humans, shock troops of the Ordo Reductor, not part of the Legio Cybernetica. Crunch wise, they're Jet Pack infantry iirc.

Yes, thanks for clarifying :P

I rarely ever see Thallanx on the table so sometimes think they're all MCs
