Riconas
After talking with my friend about his DA Successor and Cypher and how he would tie into everything, I got the urge to kitbash together my own Cypher model for him. I decided to go for a more nonchalant pose, with Cypher casually strolling across the battlefield, shooting down enemies without even looking at them after piking and decapitating a CSM. As for the Lion Sword, I decided that, since Cypher (supposedly) only carries half of the sword, I would represent that by giving him a broken sword without the scabbard. (Where did he get that scabbard, anyway? Has he been carrying it around this entire time?) I also didn't go all flashy with the pistols, because I figure that, since he tries to stay unnoticed as much as possible, it might behoove him to use standard weapons when fighting so as not to draw extra attention. All-in-all, I think it's a rather nice model, despite the absence of ACTION!!!! Let me know what you think! http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00979.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00982.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00981.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00980.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306638-cypher-conversion-for-a-friends-da-successor/ Share on other sites
Grand Master Belial
That is a cool conversion. I really only have one question. Why have the skeleton chained to the backpack? Is it to tie into the original model that is sculpted onto the backpack or is there a unique meaning that you came up with. From all I've read, Cypher is not one for taking trophies, but could it be the previous Lord Cypher? Yeah, my friend for whom I made this asked me the same question; it is partly to tie it in with the original model, and partly because I just thought it would be a cool touch, and one that would help to mark him as not just another Dark Angels model (besides the dual pistols and Lion Sword, of course). As far as the explanation goes, I told my friend that it was the remains of another as-yet-to-be-named Fallen, one whom Cypher was close friends with, and who was helping him on his quest to return to Terra until he was killed in a as-yet-to-be-named battle; Cypher promised his friend that they would both be redeemed by the Emperor himself once he had been reborn, and, not wanting to fail on this promise, has carried the remains of his friend with him through countless battles (though his friend has taken his share of damage over time as well, hence why there are no arms or legs). I think that's a rather fitting explanation, at least. Grand Master Raziel
You know, I'd been toying with the idea of picking up Cypher, but been reluctant to because I don't want to deal with Failcast. This shows there's no reason we can't kitbash him out of a DA Veteran kit. Thanks! Isiah
This looks interesting. Very characterful -- even if a bit over the top :tu:. I always imagine Cypher a sneaky-thief and slinking unobtrusively within the shadows. Anyway can't wait to see how the painting goes. Cheers I Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306638-cypher-conversion-for-a-friends-da-successor/#findComment-4020245 Share on other sites

I love kitbashing stuff together (hence my Techmarine I made just the other day), and I had also been toying with the idea of doing so for Cypher for some time. I think I know what you mean with the Finecast; I'm currently painting a Finecast Lemartes for my BA Successor, and have a primed Finecast Termie Librarian; but my converted Mephiston was an interesting challenge, especially being my FIRST real conversion (as opposed to a kitbash), since I used the Finecast Astorath to make him. I'm glad I could be an inspiration! This looks interesting. Very characterful -- even if a bit over the top . I always imagine Cypher a sneaky-thief and slinking unobtrusively within the shadows. Anyway can't wait to see how the painting goes. Cheers I Thanks! Yeah, I think that's most peoples' idea of him; it was certainly mine for a while; but then I started looking at renderings of him and taking inspiration from those, as well as other conversions. I really liked the idea of having the skeleton torso chained to the pack, so I decided to come up with the explanation above, which i think works. Besides, he's so badass that he could probably run around in Termie armor and still be stealthy. Stoic Raptor
Actually, this has me thinking. The legs and torso are the ones I'd use as well - but to reproduce the skeleton bones on his plastron, I am wondering if I could cut away the part not covered by cloth and glue in trimmed plastic skeleton ribs. I wish the picture on the GW site was a 360, so I could get a better look at the back. I thought about that as well, but after looking at some artist renderings where he has different emblems on his chest (some are the skeleton, some are a skeleton with wings, some are simply a skull with wings), I decided to shave the skull from the side of a CSM bolter and glue it over the aquila on his chest. I figure that should work well enough, since I don't really want to go into all the work you described above, mainly because I'm afraid I would ruin the model in the process. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306638-cypher-conversion-for-a-friends-da-successor/#findComment-4024447 Share on other sites
Riconas
UPDATE The painting has begun!!! Ok, well, it actually began several days ago, but I've neglected to take pics until this point, so what you see now is the current status of the model. I noticed it tends to be rather monotone, which bothered me a bit at first, but then it started to grow on me the more I associated the blandness of color with the seeming lack of emotion of the person in question; the more I think about it, the more it seems to fit. I do, however, want to darken up the robes a bit (make them sort of dingy & dirty, like they've seen decades of abuse). I might try that with a wash or something. I think that once I get the gold bits painted the color gold I want them to be, they will pop and stand out just enough to make a good contrast; I also think that the piece of green tapestry will add a nice bit of color, as well as the blood pooled up on the ground under the CSM head (not yet painted). I also need to dingy up his hair (that's the white streaks coming from his hood down his chest); I think once I do that it will look a lot better. I also need to do the plasma coils, of course, and then it's pretty much just tidying up and basing. (I realize that some of the pictures are a bit blurry, probably because I got too close and it couldn't focus properly; I noticed this after I had transferred the pictures off of the camera, and I had to charge the battery, so the next batch of pics will likely be after I've painted more. Sorry!)http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00986.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00987.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00988.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00989.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00990.jpg As a bonus/consolation for the crappy pics, here are a few of an Interrogator-Chaplain I made for my buddy's army as well; unfortunately, when his bro moved out, he took the shelf all of his guys were sitting on, and in the process somehow lost the arms, so I had to find new ones for him. I like my choices, despite the apparent lack of a ranged weapon (he had a crozius and a storm bolter or combi-weapon before); I like the pose of the pointing power fist (coincidentally, I think this came from my Death Company sprue, as well as the shoulder pad), as well as the idea of the crozius being a mace. Admittedly, I actually like the original crozius I made him better, but unfortunately I don't have the bits to recreate it, so all I can do is hope it turns up. I'll have to look through the rules again, but I'm pretty sure that I replaced his bolt pistol with a Power Fist, so no ranged attacks, but I think the literal punch of the power fist as well as the extra stats from being an Interrogator will at least partly offset that. Plus it just looks so damn cool. :D Obviously I need to prime the arms before I paint them, but I'm thinking of just doing a brush-on primer instead of the spray, partly because it will be easier, and partly because I don't want to waste the spray if I can help it. :Phttp://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00995.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00996.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00997.jpg http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu344/tedski82/WH40K/DSC00998.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306638-cypher-conversion-for-a-friends-da-successor/#findComment-4024723 Share on other sites
