It's really obvious on the Knight when I re-took pictures of it as a test, as you can see below. Best part? No cat hair! Audemus
Up until now I have kept myself locked into painting Skitarii units; as I wanted to get a fully functioning army and know I'm way to prone to randomly buy models. Well, I have 1,600 points of Skitarii with about 1,000 more points in models left but I was able to play a game finally and enjoyed the hell out of it.  Normally this would result in pursuing more models but for a pure Skitarii force the models are limited and quite frankly I needed a break from painting things red. So while I was at my local GW Store, I decided to be nostalgic and pick up some Imperial Gua...erm I mean Astra Militarum/Tempestus Scions. These guys looks really interesting and it became clear that they would enable me to build two armies at the same time, as I have some Elysian troops on the way as well. Since both can use Valkyrie's, that kills two birds with one stone.  So, brace yourself, because these are the first non-red models I've painted in a long time! haha   Militarum Tempestus - Scions - Front  http://i.imgur.com/WUTOvFL.png  So I kind of went in blind on these guys, I had theoretical color scheme that I had made for Cadians back in 2nd edition but having never attempted it, let alone on models like this, I knew that this could end in disaster. Thankfully, as far as I can tell, it did not. It was touch and go for a while though. The basic scheme was brown armor over a gray uniform, creating a desolate terrain camouflage scheme that would cross over into a ruined building board without looking out of place. I did not realize just how...in depth the brown armor would become.Counting a wash, there are 5 layers on that armor and that's without the trim. I then realized I would need to differentiate the leather straps from the armor so I built them up separately. The guns threw me another curve ball as a quick test ruled out gray guns, so yet again back to the brown utilitarian camo scheme. I was relieved when it was all said and done the unit has a cohesive look that holds true to their military background. I also decided to mix up the electronic/luminescent portions of the outfit to avoid over playing a specific color pattern  Militarum Tempestus - Scions - Side 1  http://i.imgur.com/2r4VQsy.png  I added in side shots because those little wrist pads on each guy were a pain in the ass! Getting each button on them with a bright but separate shade of blue was not fun in the least. I'll admit I was very happy with the results though, Pip-Boys will be ordered for all future Scions.  Militarum Tempestus - Scions - Side 2  http://i.imgur.com/kP9cwMC.png  Militarum Tempestus - Scions - Back  http://i.imgur.com/uMcpRAn.png   The backpacks on these guys were relatively complicated and, due the muted camo scheme, I was not able to use my tried and true leather formula of Rhinox Hide with Skrag Brown dry brush. I attempted it on one model but the Skrag was just to bright, so I opted for toning the pouches down.
Thousand Eyes
Those are really nice looking and should fit in with the other army as a nice contrast. Audemus
Those are really nice looking and should fit in with the other army as a nice contrast. Could we get a closeup of the bases? because I tried to do the whole cracked earth thing and couldn't get it to work out for me. Ask and you shall receive! I'll be honest, I kept reading that Agrellan Earth = Martian Ironearth but with a different color. That's not the case though from my experience. Unfortunately Agrellan Earth seems to have a liquid/water like consistency that makes my normal Skitarii bases impossible to replicate. I actually screwed up the bases badly on my initial pass as it was late at night and I was excited to finish these guys in two afternoons and a single night; this resulted in my reliance on the primer (without thinking) as the base coat instead of manually applying it. I knew the minute I finished them that I'd screwed up and I spent the better part of the following morning scraping the loose technical paint off of the bases. I then based them with Dryad Bark, which is a primary base color in their scheme, and re-applied being very careful not to allow the Agrellan to get to thick at the edge of the base. This isn't a difficult task with Martian Ironearth but Agrellan needs to dry some before you can trust it to not get pushed around where you don't want it applied. Anyways, here are the pics you asked for, I wasn't going for pretty so don't judge them as the lights in my photo tent aren't really configured to provide lighting from above inside the tent haha. Audemus
I got some really good responses from my Scions both here and on Reddit, so I decided to move forward with the dual Elysian/Scion army. I knocked out an Elysian Drop Troop squad over the last couple of days and the results are below!  Oh and I discovered all to late that the grav chute on my Sgt. did not sit correctly and I'm pretty sure the entire model will come apart if I try to get it loose so yeah...you're not hallucinating, it's sitting way to high. My bad!   Elysian Drop Troops - Front  http://i.imgur.com/Cb2v4y7.png  As this is my first time working with resin troops, I've built some vehicles previously, I was a bit unprepared for the amount of modification I had to perform to get them in decent poses. One of the running poses was so low that I pretty much had to put the breach charge on him just to give the illusion that the guy wasn't about to plow into the ground. The others required trimming of their collars to give the head enough room to tilt back.  In the end though, I think the camo scheme transferred over nicely. I decided to lighten the foregrip on the las rifle since it had a specific plate on the gun for it. I mimicked the color on the rifle stock as well to highlight the padding shown on the model. To match the scheme established with the scions, I made their visors from the same two green combo as well.  Elysian Drop Troops - Side 1  http://i.imgur.com/8Xost1P.png   Elysian Drop Troops - Side 2  http://i.imgur.com/Q8SR9MQ.png  Elysian Drop Troops - Back  http://i.imgur.com/7OUiaTC.png
lionofjudah
Paint jobs look great man!! The trick with resin adjusting is hot water or a hair dryer. Kobrakei
Those Scions are absolutely on-point. My scheme on the tests I did is very similar to yours, so seeing it over a whole unit is very inspiring, and now I'm adding to the paint list in my head, which is a compliment. The power cabling for the hot-shot guns, was that done with Dark Reaper?

The power cabling for the hot-shot guns, was that done with Dark Reaper?  I actually mapped out the entire paint list on my reddit post since someone asked, so you're in luck!  I was so happy to see the scheme come together on the Valkyrie and the Elysian troops as well. The Scion unit will be the first completed though, I've got the second half of the above unit already built and primed with 3 boxes (1 squad, 1 command squad) sitting on the counter with a Taurox Prime because I want to try painting it. I'll need three more Valkyries completed before I have a chance to field them though, as I'm doing the Air Cav formation from the MT codex just because it looks amusing. Everything in the army has re-breathers so I've got a Krieg Commissar on the way to fill that role without looking out of place.  Thanks for the compliment!  Brown Armor Base: Dryad Bark Dry Brush 1: Gorthor Brown Dry Brush 2: Baneblade Brown Wash: Agrax Earthshade Dry Brush 3 (Heavy to Light pressure to avoid wiping out the darker points near the edges): Karak Stone Gray Uniform Base: Abaddon Black (Potentially can be skipped depending on how smooth the black primer goes on) Dry Brush 1 (Moderate Pressure - the Black base should only darken the gray and not stand alone in the uniforms folds): Eshin Grey Dry Brush 2: Dawnstone Wash: Nuln Oil Dry Brush 3 (Light Pressure): Dawnstone I've repeated the colors to avoid making the soldiers to bright as I could easily get an almost white highlight that would look awkward against the brown armor with too much on the final layer. Hot-Shot Las Rifle Carbine: Base: Dryad Bark Wash (Light, Crevice Targeted Appliation): Nuln Wash Dry Brush (Streaky dry brush here, light pressure, to give it a more of a camo look): Gorthor Brown Dry Brush (Barrel/Carbine Square Accents): Karak Stone Hot-Shot Las Rifle Metallic Components Base (Thinned): Leadbelcher Wash: Nuln Oil *Dry Brush (Very Light): Runefang Steel Hot Shot Las Rifle Power/Charging Lines Base: Abaddon Black Dry Brush: Dark Reaper Dry Brush (Light Pressure): Fenris Grey Helmet Eyes/Wrist Screens Base: Sybarite Green Dry Brush (On the screens, avoid the outer square to give depth): Gauss Blaster Green Wrist Computer Buttons Base (Single dot): Temple Guard BlueShoulder Light & Rifle Scope Lense Base: Caledor Sky Light Paint/Dry Brush: Baharroth Blue
Urauloth
Resin is a hell substance and to work with it is to endure endless suffering. I don't know how the Heresy crew do what they do, honestly. Audemus
I really do love your scions and they are just great looking models painted perfectly in tone.  Sadly they cost an arm and a leg to buy!  Yeah the cost factor on the Air Cav Formation is relatively prohibitive for a new player, considering it involves purchasing 4 Valkyries ($60 - $65.99 each) on top of 3 squads, 1 command squad, and a commissar. If you want to the squads to be fully realized, that actually ends up being 7 Scion boxes (x3 Ten Man Squads, x1 Command Squad) at $30 - $34.99 apiece. What I can say though is doing the squads in 5 man bursts has done wonders for preventing the burn out I experienced on my Vanguard. I can go grab a 5 man box, knock them out, work on a vehicle or special character, and then finish the squad with another 5 man box.  In fact, I most likely will use some 5 man melta-gun suicide squads to drop around the board on enemy or some plasma into Taurox Primes for fast flanking action. I'm aware that the the Prime may not be as good as a Chimera but I enjoy the idea of putting them in there as fast response units; especially since this allows them to use their full ballistic skill on both weapons. I'm planning on designing them for specific tasks and multiple target engagements and long range harassment.  I'm also pondering putting an Aegis Line into the force to assist with anti-air and solid cover to fire from while deep striking units all over the place on the enemies head, supporting the Valkyries crisscrossing the field. It's hard to predict when I've yet to field them but once I have the basic formation and can run it in a battle, I'll be able to adjust accordingly. The key will be having the D-99 Elysians as a secondary force if needed or potentially bringing them in as allies, as they will provide Vultures to give my guys on the ground fire support beyond the lascannons and rocket pods.  Pretty excited to see where things go! Audemus
Well, I have knocked out the second Valkyrie for my Scion/Elysian D-99 Air Cav unit and I am very happy with the outcome. I worked really hard to keep it in-line with my initial one and feel like I've succeeded; I've also implemented the top-center tail panel that will vary in color in order to allow for each Valkyrie to be easily identified on the board.  I've finally ordered a Vulture that will be attached to the Elysian D-99 half of the force and can't wait to get started on it; hopefully I'll have it completed and up for review soon!  Elysian/Militarum Tempestus Air Cav - Current Forces  http://i.imgur.com/F0x7Lem.png  Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Internal Instruments  http://i.imgur.com/I1byapW.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Heavy Bolter Gunner  http://i.imgur.com/YZ0XaYh.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Pilot Instruments  http://i.imgur.com/zDkc4c7.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Engine Housing & Internal Lighting  http://i.imgur.com/rxkDmNE.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Front View  http://i.imgur.com/5zfn23A.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Diagonal View  http://i.imgur.com/Djsr2yA.png    Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Side 1 View  http://i.imgur.com/5L1KwCz.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Side 2 View  http://i.imgur.com/YU4oj6p.png   Elysian/Militarum Tempestus - Valkyrie 2 - Rear View  http://i.imgur.com/u4q5GjR.png

Audemus
Really nice, especially the camouflage on the valk. How about those storm bolter barrels? The nicest way to answer the storm bolter question is that I have a serious issue with drills. I've never successfully drilled a barrel and almost always destroy the gun barrel itself in the process of trying, so you can imagine I am more than a bit hesitant to try it on a vehicle I have spent so much time on. I intend to sit down with my random bits soon and drill barrels repeatedly until I get it down but after wrecking the bolt pistol on my Scion Commander, I just can't justify it right now. I know it's a skill that I need to learn though, it's just a matter of having the time to do it.
