Howdy folks!

This thread is going to be a WIP-log for my homebrew regiment, the Carcathan 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion. I have a whole lot of models and a whole lot of fluff dating back from the last few years of gaming (8 years, on and off, I suppose?). Anywho, I'm coming to the end of my college days, and I want to finally get an army fully collected and fully painted, which I have never managed to do!

So, this will be a blog of my plan, process, and (of course) pictures!

ARMY LIST

So, my army list is really in flux at the moment. I've been working on some play-testing to see what I want my final 1850 list to be. When I have something I'm comfortable with, I'll post it here!

The following is a fluffy list of the personnel, the surviving members of a Company from the 3rd Carcathan Regiment. For those interested, the titles in quotations are the callsigns for each unit. All of the Infantry models have the same callsign, indicating that they are all in the same Company. The Vehicles have different callsigns of related topics, probably acquired from often working with this company. "V1, T2+T3" mean that this particular squad is in vehicle one, and consists of fireteams two and three.

The Departmento Munitorum's...

UPLIFTING SAGAS!

A Greeting from the Departmento Munitorum!

Greetings Imperial Citizen, and welcome to the 7th Edition of the Departmento Munitorum's Uplifting Sagas! I know it seems like our 6th Edition came out just yesterday, but the word of the Emperor must be rejoiced often, and our Manufactorum print-presses have to stay busy doing something, right? Right! Speaking of print-presses, what a convenient transition!

If the Space Marines are the sanctified ink heat-pressed into the hallowed pages of Uplifting Sagas pamphlets, then the Emperor's Astra Militarum are like the pulp shoveled into the arcane print-press to make the paper! Yes, the Astra Militarum are the stinking hot mass that keeps the glorious machine of Mankind chugging along!

Remember kids: heresy denies religion, and debases this vast machine!

This edition of Uplifting Sagas tells the story of the Carcathan 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, known now as the 'Autumn War Veterans'. What a pithy title! Good show old chaps!

Our Journey Begins!

Carcatha was discovered and founded in 770.M41 by our very own Departmento Munitorum Agricultural Colonization Fleet [AD5778-6]. Those guys in [AD5778-6] certainly are plucky! Everybody knows that old joke about [AD5778-6] -- as soon as those guys find arable land, they are quickly able to land! Good joke!

By 775.M41, the people of Carcatha had raised enough young boys to offer their first founding to the Emperor's glorious Astra Militarum! In an unusual stroke of luck, these first fifteen regiments spent their first ten years of service fighting within their own Carcathan sub-sector. The brave men and women of Carcatha fought a slowly encroaching heretical invasion of their home-sector, besting the Arch-Enemy on planets both lush and arid. Small in number, but supported by larger and more numerous Militarum regiments, the Carcathans quickly became experts at  Reconnaissance and Combined-Arms tactics. By 785.M41, it seemed like the planet-cluster had been completely sanitized of the tainted forces!

Returning home to replenish their ranks with a second founding, the Guardsmen of the Carcathan regiments were looking forward to some poolside relaxation and a new stock of troops. That was when the Arch-Enemy delivered a suckerpunch to our boys in green! Oh no! The enemy in the sub-sector had cunningly left the last of their forces in reserve, and had receded to wait for the Carcathans to return home and let their guard down. The heretical forces struck out from the warp, launched an orbital assault onto the surface of Carcatha, and in the first 24 hours [all times in concordance with Terran Astral Years], almost two-thirds of Carcatha's military forces were destroyed! That's no good!

A Grizzly Occupation

Over the course of the next four years, the remaining Guardsmen of Carcatha's first founding fought a desperate guerilla war to defend their home world. Corruption spread through the civilian population, bolstering the foul heretic's ranks with inductees and cultists. The fungal, infectious, and necrotic warp-blight spread without restraint through the ecosphere, throwing into disarray the delicate ecological balance that once sustained Carcatha's abundant plantlife. The planet was thrown into a perpetual winter -- green plants all but died out, replaced instead by the reds, oranges, and yellows of a few breeds of unusual Carcathan flora, tainted by Chaos' touch. Many remarked that it felt like a four-year autumn.

By 789.M41, the grizzled veterans of this 'Autumn War' were on the ropes when the glorious forces of the [CLASSIFIED] arrived, lead by the powerful and mysterious [CLASSIFIED]. With their [CLASSIFIED] and their [CLASSIFIED], they [CLASSIFIED], [CLASSIFIED], and [CLASSIFIED] the foul heresy that had gone just a little too far!

The Horse's Mouth!

But you've heard enough from me, a lowly Servitor Editus-Propogandus! Let's hear the tales from the fighters of Carcatha themselves! Join me, as we recount the brave exploits of these few men and women! Let's see how the Arch-Enemy of tomorrow lays dead at the feet of the Everyman of today! Take a bow, IG. Take a bow, little guy. You've caught the eye of the Departmento Munitorum's Uplifting Sagas, and I (for one) can't wait to hear what you've done!

WIP UPDATE 26 APRIL 2015

Howdy Folks!

So it'll still be a few weeks before I'm reunited with my little plastic men, but here are some WIP pics of the last stuff I was working on:

Leman Russ, to be converted later into a Demolisher

Here's a shot of my 'Guerilla Veterans.'

That's all for now! Thanks folks!

PS: are these pictures too big? I'm still new to posting stuff online, so I'm not quite sure how to make them smaller.

  • 1 month later...

This is good stuff gunny, I particularly like the simple scheme of the Russ. It works very well with the weathering :) I think the conversion work on the troopers is great, looks like a variety of bits and GS? Do your your troops have AKs or just the Vets?

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!

WarriorFish, I've got two squads of vets -- one has AK-variants, and the other has AR15-variants. My infantry have converted guns, but nothing real-world specific.

And CyderPirate, I love that description! I wasn't familiar with Beano, so I had to look it up! Haha.

More minis and fluff coming soon!

  • 2 months later...

Hey folks! Been a while since I updated my little men here, and I've been adding lots of bodies and making lots of progress! While it's still a little heavy on "toys" versus "boys," I am very happy with these guys as my 1850 list:

http://i1328.photobucket.com/albums/w521/jonhogrady/Carcathan%201850%20Full%20_zpssg6wfmyt.jpg

A shot of the whole army! The hardened survivors of the siege of Carcatha, requisitioned by Inquisitor Nicolai Emyrich (a Lok counts-as) along with the Grey Knights!

Multi-Melta Servitors, modern "gun-cart" style, cruising with the Inquisitor's Retinue

http://i1328.photobucket.com/albums/w521/jonhogrady/Carcathan%201850%20Command%20Squad_zpsx8xiyez2.jpg

Command Squad for the Company, led by Captain Geriod, along with Naval Captain Sin, and repeating heavy Las-Sniper (Lascannon) in the middle of a jam! Oh No!

The first Veteran Squad -- meltavets riding in a Chimera

http://i1328.photobucket.com/albums/w521/jonhogrady/Carcathan%201850%20Commandos_zpsdme0dmvh.jpg

The second Veteran Squad -- meltavets again, this time with more of an "Operator" vibe than the "Guerilla" feel of the other squad

http://i1328.photobucket.com/albums/w521/jonhogrady/Vendetta%20WIP_zpsnahq4wvx.jpg

WIP of the Vendetta, with smaller hull size to reflect reduced transport capacity. Still needs wing-mounted Lascannons and some kind of engine components. Any ideas for where I can grab a couple engines for cheap?

http://i1328.photobucket.com/albums/w521/jonhogrady/Vulture%20WIP_zpsdenjvd48.jpg

And last, but not least, my WIP Vulture: aka Carcathan Pattern AH-1 Vulture, with twin-linked Punisher Cannons. Boom. Love this bird. The plan is to add a scenic diorama to the base of pinned squad emerging from a destroyed transport, so that at least 50% of the model is GW. Sneaky, I know.

That's all I've got! The list looks like this, by the way:

Astra Militarum CAD

Company Command Squad (Lascannon, Vox-Caster, Officer of the Fleet, Camo-Cloaks ) 123

Veteran Squad (Lascannon, 2x Sniper Rifle, Vox-Caster, Forward Sentries) 99

Veteran Squad (Lascannon, 2x Sniper Rifle, Vox-Caster, Forward Sentries) 99

Veteran Squad (3x Meltagun, Chimera) 155

Veteran Squad (3x Meltagun, Chimera) 155

Vulture Gunship (TL Punisher Cannons) 155

Vendetta Gunship 170

Avenger Strike Fighter 150

Leman Russ Battle Tank 150

Grey Knights Nemesis Strike Force

Inquisitor Lok 60

Inquisitorial Henchmen Warband (2x Jokaero, 3x Multi-Melta Servitor, Psyker, Chimera) 165

Terminator Squad (5x Force Halberd) 175

Dreadknight (Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Greatsword) 190

The list breaks down into four rough elements:

1) Ground Fire Support Element (CCS and Lascannon Vets) -- sit in cover and hold home objective

2) Ground Mobile Element (Meltavets, Inquisitor/Melta-Retinue, Leman Russ) -- move to capture the "center of gravity" on the game board

3) Ground Close-Combat Element (Dreadknight, Terminators) -- drop in to support LAVs, or to disrupt enemy backfield

4) Air Support (Vulture, Vendetta, Avenger) -- provide Anti-Air and Anti-Ground fire, taking out key enemy threats

Let me know what y'all think of this batch of little men!
