Cult Mechanicus as soon as next week?

Recommended Posts

I'm actually toying around with picking up an Arvus Lighter for my Skitarii/AdMech - it's functional enough to ferry Vanguard into combat, but it's utilitarian enough to fit the AdMech aesthetic.

Question is if I wanna pay like 90 eurobucks for a rather crappy flyer to ferry 6 venguard to godknowswhere :P I really like the model and if it would be cheaper I sure as hell would find a niche especially in some scenarios but as it stands I sure hope AdMech get something else to work with.

The more I think of it though, I am actually fine without transports. Think about it. Skitarii have the objective grabbers, anti tank and anti-air with scouting Troops, Dragoons, Arc Rifles and Icarus Array Onager. Cult has the Plasma and the mid-field presence with MCs and hopefully some tough-ish troops.

Technically, this could work. Especially with Knights.

Or maybe that is just the optimist speaking who really wants to get away from playing Power Armour :D

Arvus Lighters carry up to 12 models, so I can fit a whole squad plus a character. It's not nearly as good as a Valkyrie, yes, but it fits my army aesthetic a bit better.

I agree, Skitarii can definitely work without transports. I don't really plan on picking up any Rhinos or Chimeras, though I do have a few ideas for count-as Drop Pods. Even if I don't use them, I'll still collect some models for the sake of having them.

I play Imperial Knights as primary, so sometimes it's nice to have transports instead of walking everywhere.

Everyone keeps looking for a transport. I know the competitive tourney players seem to want one, but I dont think we'll get one. If  we do, I think it will provide protection but not speed.

The codex is full of imagery of the warrior automatons simply walking into battle...the Skitarii march onward...the vast majority of Cohorts are not borne into battle by armored machines or aircraft, but simply stride to the front line without stopping, even should they have to start the journey months in advance of their allies. They will wade thru poisonous swamps and bubbling lakes.....they would rather walk themselves to death than disobey a direct imperative...all the while Rangers march in silent unstoppable lock step... so a shambling robot/zombie force it seems.

Well, transports are a key component of most other traditional armies.  It's natural for people to gravitate towards what they're familiar with.  Plus, the novel Skitarius does feature troops riding into battle on Onagers or Valkyrie Sky Talons so it's not without precedent.

The thing is I'm a sucker for fluff so I kinda can't take an army without any transports seriously, especially when in the fluff they sport the probably biggest selection of vehicles in any Imperial faction. How many instances are there where the battles are so contained that the AdMech troops can just jog around between hotspots, especially the Onagers and regular troops which aren't any faster than the average footslogging Astra Militarum Guardsman.

Tournament players like myself ask for one for precisely three reasons:

1) We are used to it

2) Alpha Strike protection

3) Mobility

1) can be discarded. If 2) and 3) have alternatives, then none of us will request transports.

As for the visual theme, since I am not playing AdMech but a noble house, I prefer having infantry on the board. It looks epic when there are a bunch of hunters hiding in the bushes and knights charge across the field. The Dragoons look like mounted knights by way of 40k. It really reminds me of jousting matches. I would dislike clunky boxes ruining it. But in terms of efficiency, point 2) and 3) need to be accounted for in the end.

Back when I first started looking into the Mechancius, they were defined by clunky boxes - Imperium/Mechancius tech was much more brutalistic/unrefined than any other race.  Since the Mechanicum appeared in Forge World's Horus Heresy universe, they've moved towards steampunk and otherwise-bizarre constructs like the Dunestriders.  You can also see it in the abandonment of the Lucius-pattern Titans and the return to the sleeker Mars-pattern.  That's all fine and good, but I'll miss the boxes.

Also, while things like transports and flyers aren't strictly necessary for success, that doesn't mean that players won't wish for them.  Space Marines can fair perfectly well without Land Speeders, but if you're the type of player that really enjoys Land Speeders you're going to want one.  Sometimes it's more about look and feel rather than effectiveness.

Someone trying to take away my Iron Hands' Land Speeders laugh.png? I pity the fool that tries.

Anyway, what about this HQ? I've heard it's supposed to look like one of the 30k Magos (I guess that's the plural form) but can we be sure about that? I'd aesthetically hate to have some big-brained guy on the field.

Oh well, there's always converting and modeling!

Apart from what it looks like not much is known. From what i've heard it sounds more like he is crawling on spider-like legs and doesn't have the cyber-cortex elongated head like the Ordo Cyberneticus FW model.

ok, why is there an autocannon turret on top. and when the fluff thing says never before seen weaponry i demand a knight with a massive plasma cavalier.

The new Knight-box includes an additional sprue with new weapon options, face masks and three different weapons for the shoulder mount.

I seriously surprised that that poster seems to imply that the Electro-Priests and Kataphrons are no dual-kits what would seem like a wasted opportunity?!

Holy... Looks like our hopes are almost fulfilled. Those tracked infantry thingies and those MC dudes look exactly like the tough support that the mobile Skitters need.

And if IK is an actual LoW, then there will be no looking back. You can not imagine how stoked I am right now.

I am literally trying to sell off most every other 40k piece i own to get into this army at full blast. stoked as hell.

I am too throwing everything I can at eBay. Lets hope the rules are half way decent ;)

I am doomed... Another month of buying miniatures. The sprue stack is getting larger and larger...

I got 1650 pts skitarii... now the question is... what will I add to this force from the new stuff? Or should I sack some of the Skitarii for AdMech... ah well.

if you decide to sack it, let me know.

But I know the feeling of doom. Have to sell some of my current stuff to make room lol.
