Prot's Vortex Follies

This isn't a batrep, but perhaps a collection of the incredible Vortex follies I have on a regular basis....

 

I probably need a break from my GK... I"ve been playing them non stop... and every game I get frustrated, or feeling like 'how do I get out of this mess?' The answer I seem to always come up with is VORTEX TIME!

 

Last night... a game against Orks. I'm trying to widdle down 2 trucks loaded with 4+ save boyz, and a 12 Deathstar Lucky stick/FnP/Bike squad with 2 fists... (I hate this squad).

 

Nothing is going well. I have decided to deny flank, but while he can't shoot me very well because of my positioning, his casualties are super low and he's within charge range on his turn.... Cleansing Flame was barely sparking....

 

What do I do?

 

VORTEX. 

 

I launch a 12" Vortex, get a perils, take a wound.... The vortex doesn't scatter, but only hits the back of a crappy truck. It does blow up but we're talking... 40 points damage?

 

As usual 99.97% of my games take place on my opponent's deploy zone, so I ask my opponent to kindly measure the vortex scatter the next turn as I roll the dice. He (quite fairly) placed the scatter on my own Dreadknight... BOOM... dead! The Librarian cringes in horror, and hopes... nobody saw?!?!

 

Next turn, Vortex scatter, I roll the dice..... keep in mind my opponent went from hating the vortex to laughing maniacally at my deviations. He can't wait for it! So I roll and as usual I roll the dice closer to him so he can see the direction arrow accurately.

 

He says it's 8"... great, get the direction down... (I can see the arrow myself) and it's pointing at.... my second Librarian (The one who launched it is already dead), and the blast lands over 6 terminators plus my last HQ!!!!!

 

I am literally filling my boots with terror, when I notice both the dice are '4s'!!! Whew.... THAT WAS CLOSE!

 

Honestly, I was crushing him pretty good but in all honesty because of the situation (my Stormraven with 10 Purifires never came on til turn 4) I believe with a bad wound result (VERY possible) from that vortex, it would have been game over.

 

The problem is I am addicted to Vortex like space crack.

I know what you mean. There's something about how destructive it can be mixed with how unpredictable it is...When it goes well, it goes REALLY well...when it doesn't...well you're liable to get yourself killed if you don't gate away as soon as humanly possible.

I once lost 6 termies because the vortex scattered onto where i gated. Literally, i scattered into a bunch of trees, the very next turn the vortex scattered into a bunch of terminator infested trees.

The saddest times for me though is when they scatter and do nothing :(

So far my Vortex has claimed a dreadknight, a grandmaster, a brother captain, a handful of terminators and paladins, and like 2 strikes lol....

 

 

I say we start a new thread, much like the Khârn thread chaos has, but in reverse (how many friendly units it's killed) it shall be called "today my Vortex killed" xD

How about a scoring system?

 

Teamkill points:

- Squad member: 10pts

- Justicar/Flame Knight: 20pts

- HQ: 50pts

- DK: 100pts

 

Enemy points:

- Squad member: 10pts

- Squad leader: 20pts

- HQ: 50pts

- MC: 100pts

- Super-heavy/Gargantuan: 200pts

In my last game vs tyranids I attempted to utilise vortex of doom to clear the gaunt hordes, or at least try to deny him some charge paths to bog down NDKs. I get one down, it hits! Kills a mawlock. Then proceeds to scatter on top of a terminator vs gaunts close combat, clipping two terminators and all the remaining gaunts. Both terminators survive, all the gaunts kick the bucket. Im in the clear! Great success for the vortex, so I throw another one down, hoping to dissuade the other three gaunt squads from swamping the flank, it scatters in to no mans land. The other scatters juuuuust in front of a gaunt squad.

Alright, alright. Im good, the likelihood of them scattering on me is near zilch, the probability of nabbing gaunts is huge for both of them. Interceptors with the relic are getting bogged down by gargoyles in the centre. To their left is a terminator squad with libby HQ withering inane fire from a flying hive tyrant and a dakka fex, to the right is a lone terminator and an NDK, two vortixes of doom and wave upon wave of gaunts, with a tervigon being akin to an open womb overflowing with foul xenos pouring fourth to seal my fate.

Its scatter time, I really need something good on both or Ill get swamped.

New list idea: 2x ML3 librarian, one barebones terminator squad. Repeat as many times as you can fit, fish for vortex, and watch the world burn.
